About this painting

A tall column of cream and peach light stands just left of centre, hemmed in by a dark olive edge on one side and a deep cobalt-teal field on the other.

Down the right half runs a smudged mass of umber-black, and along its lower edge a few sparks of amber flare like embers. A faint blush of pink lies low in the pale column, and a single chip of bright blue sits at its foot. The paint is built up in short, thick, layered strokes that leave a rough surface. Light and dark are pushed hard together, and the amber is the hottest note.
