Saudi Arabia: what buyers hang, what the walls need, and where made-to-order originals fit

Saudi Arabia buys art at scale through three channels: private villas whose ground floors hold two to seven reception rooms 154157, a hotel pipeline of 387 projects and 105,648 rooms at Q2 2026 180, and corporate headquarters moving into Riyadh's financial district 6465. The top of the market is now priced in public — Sotheby's two Diriyah sales made USD 17.3 million in February 2025 and USD 19.6 million in January 2026 24 — but most purchases happen privately with no published price 5, and local supply of hand-painted canvases above 200 cm is thin 334297. This guide reports what buyers in Riyadh and Jeddah hang, what their walls measure, and where made-to-order originals fit.

Who buys art at scale in Saudi Arabia, and what do they hang?

Villa owners, hotel developers with their art consultants, and corporate and state buyers — in that order of wall space. Riyadh had more than 20,000 dollar millionaires, 77 centi-millionaires and 11 billionaires at the 2024 count reported in April 2025, a millionaire population up 65% over the decade; Jeddah had about 10,400 358. Nationally there were about 348,000 millionaires in 2025 362 and 4,388 ultra-high-net-worth individuals in 2026, forecast to reach 7,162 by 2031 363. Their money sits in houses: 54% of surveyed residents prefer a villa 165, home ownership passed 66% in 2025 371, and a North Riyadh villa listed above SAR 10 million typically carries a men's majlis, a women's majlis, a further reception room and a family hall, with one 2026 listing offering seven majlis in a single compound 154157.

Hotels place the largest single orders. Riyadh's pipeline reached a record 21,666 rooms at Q2 2026 and Jeddah's 14,435 180. One consultancy supplied 491 artworks for the 212-key Kimpton KAFD in 2025 54197 and 449 artworks plus more than 1,000 custom pieces for the 134-room Bab Samhan in Diriyah 189188; a Dubai firm reports more than 1,500 custom pieces for the 210-room W Riyadh 185183. Painting is one medium among textiles, ceramics, calligraphy and sculpture in these collections, and Saudi artists make up a third to a half of each roster 191.

Corporate demand is newer and smaller: EY took 14 floors at KAFD for 1,900 staff in 2025 64, Bain more than doubled its Riyadh office 65, a 9,500 m² flexible workspace opened there in July 2026 with each floor themed on a Saudi landscape 66, and the state's Art Bank had received more than 6,730 works from 2,540 Saudi artists by September 2025 to decorate bank branches 52.

What people hang is best read from published homes: a Christie's director's Riyadh villa opens on a large grey canvas of a woman by a Syrian painter, with a blue Samia Halaby abstract in the salon 123; an architect's family home hangs one painting per formal room, by Vietnamese, Spanish and Italian artists 125; an entrepreneur's villa uses a gallery wall of faceless-figure prints by a Saudi artist on a neutral base 126. About a third of buyers at both Sotheby's Diriyah sales were Saudi and 30% of participants at the first were under 40 3163. A Saudi critic cautions that home buying is still forming and that the entry route is the small-painting show, works under 50 cm at no more than SAR 1,500 26, and family offices allocate about 1% to art against a 7% global average 5. Both hold at once: a thin collecting elite above and a large, price-cautious mass-affluent market below (inference).

What does the local supply look like, and at what prices?

Three tiers with a gap in the middle: signed Saudi originals from about SAR 8,000 to six figures, factory and imported hand-painted decor from about SAR 300 to SAR 3,000, and almost no hand-painted work above 200 cm at any price. A Riyadh luxury retailer lists a 150 × 180 cm painting by the pioneer Abdullah Hammas at SAR 120,000 and a 273 × 231 cm contemporary work at SAR 70,000 (September 2026), while its own decorative canvases run from SAR 375 for 60 × 80 cm to SAR 1,600 for 100 × 160 cm 11. Galleries such as ATHR and Hafez sell by enquiry with no listed prices 318319, and a Saudi art advisory says most of the market happens privately, off auction, with no public price at all 5.

The decor tier is dense and cheap. Home Centre's largest hand-painted canvas is 200 × 150 cm at SAR 999, with 80 × 120 cm pieces at SAR 299–499 (September 2026) 334; Bloomr's standard 120 × 80 cm acrylic is SAR 1,503 and its top 150 × 200 cm piece SAR 7,013 327; a Saudi furniture chain sells US-brand hand-painted abstracts at 127 × 188 cm for SAR 2,895 333; IKEA's printed canvases run SAR 59–359 330; Amazon.sa is led by Chinese factory canvases at SAR 184–1,622, reviewed mostly by buyers outside the Kingdom 301. The one local supplier of hand-painted panels at 220 × 150 cm, custom to 300 cm, starts at SAR 6,110 with 6–14 weeks' delivery 297; a made-to-order hand-painted piece elsewhere (sizes from 130 × 105 cm) takes a month 15.

Which suggests the gap: a designer who needs a 250 cm original in a chosen palette within a month cannot buy it off a Saudi shelf. Price bands by tier are on the local supply page.

What do the rooms measure, and what scale does the wall need?

Saudi rooms are taller and longer than European ones, and a villa's ground floor is a suite of reception rooms with seating along every wall. Villa rules set each floor's net height at 2.70–3.50 m 148; ROSHN's premium Sedra villas are marketed with ceilings up to 3.2 m on plots of 400–650 m² 149, and a 26 m² majlis in the same community gives a free wall of about 5 m 150. Measured Jeddah villa living rooms ran 7 × 10 m and 6 × 13 m with 3–4 m ceilings 162; across a 6–7 m viewing distance a single canvas needs to be about 1.8–3 m wide to read, so a 120 cm painting of the Western living-room norm reads as a small object (inference) 162. Majlis seating runs round the perimeter with the centre open 91, so the hangable band starts above a 121 cm sofa back and runs up to a 3.2–4.2 m ceiling, which favours horizontals and panoramics of 2–4 m over tall verticals 9091. The one place a tall vertical fits is the double-height entrance hall or stair void, roughly 6–7.5 m floor to ceiling in a two-storey villa (derived) 148. A villa above SAR 10 million has on the order of 6–10 reception walls of 6–12 m each, a programme of 8–15 large works (derived) 155.

Offices and hotels scale the same way. A Saudi studio's hotel guidance puts lobby feature canvases at 192 × 108 cm and guestroom art at 80 × 120 cm above the bed, one to two pieces per room 193; W Riyadh anchors its lobby with a six-metre tapestry 183. Sixty per cent of the Kingdom's hotel rooms are luxury, upper-upscale or upscale 377, and Riyadh is targeted to add 4.8 million m² of office space by 2030 376. Room-by-room detail is on villas and majlis, offices, hotels and restaurants and the size guide.

Which styles, palettes and subjects fit Saudi walls?

A sand-to-gold desert palette on a calm neutral base, geometry that echoes Najdi plaster and Al Sadu weaving, and subjects chosen for the room's audience. A Riyadh business family's 580 m² reception floor was finished in sand-hued beige, soft cream, sunbaked terracotta and accents of gold, with Najdi triangles reinterpreted in restrained form 124; another Riyadh designer keeps large rooms minimal in beige and grey so that jewel-toned gestural paintings stand out in an art-led majlis 111; Saudi retailers recommend earthy beige, sand and light brown for majlis art 8384; a 2026 villa-design guide names 'Wild Blooms' and colour blocking as the emerging accents on neutral bases 308. The Najdi triangle now appears 'everywhere' in Riyadh, from walls to metro seats 349; the Red Sea and AlUla resorts work in sand, stone and earth with Bedouin textile references 347; Jeddah's heritage register is coral stone, lattice and stained glass 350. Saudi modernism's most collected idiom is itself desert abstraction: Mohammed Al Saleem's 'Horizonism' bands of desert colour made USD 756,000 in January 2026 316353.

Subject matter is decided room by room. Published fatwas prohibit hanging images of living beings 7877, yet Saudi retailers openly sell horses, animals and female faces 88, a figurative 1968 street scene set the Saudi auction record at USD 2.06 million 4, and a collector's foyer holds a portrait of a woman 123. The low-risk default for a formal majlis, a corporate reception or a gift is landscape, abstraction, geometry and heritage architecture, with figurative and animal work offered on request for private rooms (inference) 77. Nudes stay outside the market — the Botero chosen for Sotheby's Riyadh sale was fully dressed 341103 — and the flag or shahada used as a decorative motif reads as naive or offensive 97. The five catalogue cuts below follow those findings; the full mapping is on taste and styles.

How do buyers in Saudi Arabia work with us?

By brief, progress photo and stage approval, with the size and palette set to the wall. iHomeArt is the trade channel of Siji Art Hub in Foshan: 1,455 original hand-painted canvases, each painted to order in any size, with 2 m and panoramic formats routine, palette changes possible, no prints and no stock. That addresses the two gaps above: the 6–14 week lead time on the only local hand-painted panel at 220 cm 297 and the 200 × 150 cm ceiling at chain retail 334.

  • Timing. About one week to paint plus 3–7 days in transit: 10–13 days door to door, inside the 15-day delivery window Saudi e-commerce rules expect of local sellers 48.
  • Remote approval. The Saudi market prizes in-person deals over anonymous bidding 338; progress photos or video at each stage, with approval before the next, stand in for the studio visit. Every piece is signed by the artist and carries a certificate of authenticity.
  • Size and palette. Catalogue sizes run to 254 cm (100 in) and every work can be painted larger, so a 3 m (118 in) majlis horizontal or a 2.5 m (98 in) stair vertical is an ordinary order; colours can be shifted to a scheme's sand, terracotta and gold 124 or to the green-and-turquoise pairs a Riyadh hotel used for its rooms 195.
  • Finish and local framing. Works ship rolled, stretched, or framed in gold, silver, black, white or wood — the finishes Saudi retailers offer for majlis canvases are black, white, wood, champagne, gold, beige and silver 83. Buyers who prefer to frame locally take the work rolled and have it stretched in Riyadh or Jeddah; gallery-stores such as Zaitia deliver and install in Riyadh 12.
  • Shipping and terms. Free insured worldwide shipping by DHL, FedEx or USPS; minimum order one piece, volume pricing from ten; no public prices, with a quote within one business day. Custom-made items sit outside the seven-day cancellation right in Saudi e-commerce rules 48, which is why approval happens at each stage rather than on delivery.

City and regional guides

Riyadh is read on its own page, district by district: the Al Malqa, Hittin and Al Nakheel villa belt at SAR 9,000–16,000 per m² of asking price (Bayut, Q1 2026) 454, the KAFD towers at 0.5% prime vacancy (JLL, Q1 2026) 493 and a hotel pipeline of 106 projects and 21,666 rooms (Q2 2026) 476. It covers Sedra and Diriyah, the majlis typology, the galleries and stores with SAR prices, Riyadh taste against Jeddah and sizing by room type: Riyadh: villa districts, KAFD towers and the hotel pipeline.

Jeddah has its own page for the reader who searches the coast rather than the capital. It reads the Al Shati, Obhur and Al Murjan villas with two salons and a dining room on the ground floor 390391, the Corniche towers from the Four Seasons and Raffles residences to Jeddah Central’s 17,000 planned units 393416, an 18,760-key hotel stock growing on the Corniche and in Obhur 401, the Hijazi register of rawashin and coral stone 448, the galleries and stores with SAR prices, and sizing by room type: Jeddah: Red Sea villas, Corniche towers, hotels and galleries.

Questions buyers in Saudi Arabia ask

Can I buy a hand-painted canvas over 200 cm off the shelf in Saudi Arabia?
Rarely. Home Centre's largest hand-painted canvas is 200 × 150 cm at SAR 999 334, Bloomr's is 150 × 200 cm at SAR 7,013 327, and the one local hand-painted panel maker offers 220 × 150 cm, custom to 300 cm, from SAR 6,110 with 6–14 weeks' delivery (September 2026) 297. Above that, buyers commission.
How big are majlis walls, and what does that mean for the painting?
A 26 m² villa majlis has a free wall of about 5 m; a 24-person majlis has two 7.4 m lateral walls, with seating along every wall 1509091. Formal rooms therefore take 2–4 m (79–157 in) horizontals or a matched series; Saudi retail guidance says 75% of the wall width, then stops at 135 × 185 cm 83. See the size guide.
Are figurative or animal paintings acceptable in Saudi homes?
It depends on the household and the room. Fatwas published in the Kingdom prohibit hanging images of living beings 78, yet Saudi retailers sell horses and female faces 88 and a figurative 1968 street scene set the national auction record at USD 2.06 million in January 2026 4. Landscape, abstraction and geometry are the safe default for formal rooms 77.
What colours do Saudi designers ask for?
Neutral bases in beige, cream and grey with sand, terracotta and gold accents: a 2025 Riyadh reception floor used exactly that desert palette 124, another designer keeps large rooms calm so jewel-toned paintings stand out 111, and retailers recommend beige, sand and light brown for majlis art 83. A 2026 guide names 'Wild Blooms' as the emerging accent 308.
How much do original paintings by Saudi artists cost?
From a few hundred riyals to six figures. Small-painting exhibitions sell works under 50 cm for up to SAR 1,500 26 and Atelier Jeddah caps its annual show at SAR 300–2,000 25; a Riyadh retailer lists a 150 × 180 cm Abdullah Hammas at SAR 120,000 (September 2026) 11; the auction record is USD 2.06 million 4.
Which cities matter most for art buyers?
Riyadh first, Jeddah second. Riyadh has more than 20,000 dollar millionaires to Jeddah's 10,400 (2024 count) 358, 106 hotel projects in the pipeline to Jeddah's 62 (Q2 2026) 180, and 1.08 million Saudi-family homes against 1.07 million in the whole Makkah region (2025) 372. Jeddah has the older private-collecting culture 343.
How long does a made-to-order original take to reach Riyadh or Jeddah?
From iHomeArt, about one week to paint plus 3–7 days in transit, 10–13 days door to door, with progress photos at each stage. Local made-to-order alternatives quote 6–14 weeks for a 220 × 150 cm panel 297 or a month for a made-to-order hand-painted piece (from 130 × 105 cm) 15; express carriers deliver in 2–4 business days 47.
Do Saudi hotels buy paintings, or only textiles and sculpture?
Both. Kimpton KAFD's 491-piece collection includes paintings alongside sculpture, photography and calligraphy 54, Desert Rock's 103 works are led by abstract compositions and paintings 190, and a Saudi studio recommends canvases of 192 × 108 cm for lobbies and 80 × 120 cm for guestrooms 193. Painting is one medium among several in each brief 191.
