How do you size a painting for a Saudi wall?
Start from the ceiling and the seating, not from the sofa alone. Saudi villa rules set each floor's net height between 2.70 m and 3.50 m, with a ground and a first floor inside a 12 m envelope 148, and five Jeddah villa living rooms measured for a 2018 study ran 6–7 m wide by 8–13 m long under 3 m or 4 m ceilings 162. Rooms of that size are viewed across 6–7 m, so a single canvas needs to be roughly 1.8–3 m wide, or a multi-panel run of 3–4 m, to read from the opposite seating; the 120 cm painting of a European living room reads as a small object here, an inference from the measured rooms 162.
Local rules of thumb agree on proportion, not size. Lowha, a Saudi wall-art brand, says a canvas should take 50–75% of the wall, never be wider than the furniture beneath it, and hang with its bottom edge 15–25 cm above the sofa back 290; its majlis guide says about 75% of the wall width 83; Fayafi Najd in Riyadh says two-thirds of the sofa 295. On a 3 m sofa run that is 150–225 cm; on an 8 m wall, 4–5 m of art 162. A March 2026 UAE villa guide, the nearest published comparable, centres art at 145–155 cm in 3 m rooms and 165–180 cm in double-height rooms 163; we use those heights by analogy because the Saudi 2.70–3.50 m rule matches its 3 m standard 148163.
How wide should the painting on a majlis wall be?
200–350 cm (79–138 in) as one panoramic canvas or a matched triptych; 100–140 cm (39–55 in) tall under a 3.2 m ceiling, up to 150–180 cm (59–71 in) under 4 m or more; lower edge 15–25 cm above the sofa backs, about 135–145 cm off the floor. Perimeter seating with an open centre is 'non-negotiable' in a modern Saudi majlis, with 30–40 cm seat heights replacing floor cushions 91. A February 2026 luxury specification gives a 24-person majlis of about 9 m × 11 m, two 7.4 m lateral walls, a minimum 4.2 m ceiling and modular sofas with a 121 cm back 90. The hangable band therefore runs from about 1.3–1.4 m up to a 3.2–4.2 m ceiling along walls of 5–11 m, which favours wide horizontals hung in rhythm with the seating rather than tall verticals, a derivation rather than a measurement 91. A ROSHN VL4 majlis is nearly 26 m², roughly 5 m × 5 m with a 5 m free wall 150; there 200–250 cm is the top of the range, and a 300 cm canvas belongs to the 7–11 m walls of the SAR 10 million-plus houses 150155.
The local market confirms the direction but stops short of the scale: Lowha lists majlis canvases from 85 × 120 cm to 135 × 185 cm 83, and Mille in Al Malqa sells hand-painted panels at 220 × 150 cm standard, custom to 300 cm, from SAR 6,110 with 6–14 weeks' delivery 297. Where the walls are marmorino with gilded pilasters at 1.8 m centres 90, the canvas either fits one bay at 140–160 cm wide or spans two as a 300 cm-plus piece. A cast-gypsum feature wall, as in a Hittin ladies' majlis, usually wins the focal wall 124, so hang on the lateral wall. For a men's majlis the low-risk subjects are calligraphy, landscape, abstract and heritage architecture, with figurative work offered for private rooms on request, our inference from the retail and fatwa evidence 77.

Maqlat, dining room and family hall
Dining (maqlat): 150–250 cm (59–98 in) wide over a sideboard, or a panoramic 300–400 cm (118–157 in) where the table seats 20 or more; family hall: 150–200 cm (59–79 in) over the main sofa, or three 100 × 100 cm (39 × 39 in) in a row. Riyadh listings describe the ground floor as men's majlis, women's majlis, maqlat, women's hall and family hall 160; a SAR 16 million Al Nafal villa has two majlis, a further reception room, a family living room and a separate dining room, so at least four hangable public rooms 154. A SAR 23 million Al Arid villa lists a dining room seating 32, which implies a table of roughly 8–10 m and a room 11–13 m long, a derived figure 156: that is a panoramic wall, well beyond the 100–150 cm the UAE comparable gives for dining rooms 163. In the family hall both formats are in use: an architect's Riyadh home hangs one painting per formal room 125, an entrepreneur's villa uses a gallery wall of Ethar Balkhair prints 126; the 50–75% rule sets the width either way 290.
Which format suits the entrance hall and stair void?
A vertical 120–150 cm (47–59 in) wide by 200–300 cm (79–118 in) tall, or a stacked pair, centred at 165–180 cm (65–71 in). Two floors of 2.70–3.50 m net plus slabs give a hall open to above (bahw) of roughly 6–7.5 m, so the entrance and stair-void walls are the only places in a villa where a 2–3 m tall canvas is proportionate, a derivation from the building rules 148. Listings phrase the space as a hall open to the floor above 160, and a 'double height' villa on a 240 m² plot in East Riyadh shows the feature has reached the small-plot end of the market 177. The foyer takes the statement piece: visitors to the Riyadh villa of Christie's Saudi managing director face a large grey-toned canvas by Safwan Dahoul on entering 123.
Master suites, home office, apartments and compound villas
Over a king bed, 100–160 cm (39–63 in) wide and no taller than 100 cm (39 in); a home-office wall, 100–150 cm (39–59 in); a Riyadh penthouse or compound villa, 100–150 cm per wall. The UAE comparable gives 100–120 cm over a king bed 163, and a Saudi studio's hotel guide sets 80 × 120 cm above beds 193; a master suite with its own lounge, as listed in Al Rabi 155, takes the larger end. Dedicated home offices are a minority: in the 2020 lockdown Saudi villa employees worked 52% from living rooms and 37% from bedrooms, a third of them in 10 m² or less 161, so the office wall is usually a living-room or bedroom wall. Riyadh's luxury apartments above SAR 4 million run only 130–339 m² 171, and expatriate compound villas of 240–300 m² are usually furnished, so both take tenant-scale art of 100–150 cm, an inference from the listings 172. Calming nature scenes are the local recommendation for bedrooms 86.
Offices, hotel lobbies and guestrooms
Lobby or reception: 250–400 cm (98–157 in) wide, or a triptych; boardroom: 200–300 cm (79–118 in); guestroom: 80 × 120 cm (31 × 47 in) over the bed; corridors: a repeating series of 60 × 90 cm and 80 × 120 cm. The Saudi studio Safaya specifies lobby feature walls at 192 × 108 cm, guestroom art at 80 × 120 cm or 60 × 90 cm, one to two pieces per room, and corridors as alternating series in uniform frames 193; the new Riyadh hotels go far beyond that at the front of house. W Riyadh's lobby is anchored by a six-metre tapestry by Abdulnasser Gharem 183 and the JW Marriott has a triple-volume glazed lobby and a seven-metre-wide reception desk 196. Guestroom art is a volume business: 491 works for the Kimpton KAFD 54, 449 for Bab Samhan in Diriyah 189, 71 for the Sofitel 56. In offices, the Saudi National Bank fit-out covered 20,000 m² of typical floors in a minimalist language with no artworks mentioned 63, and EY's KAFD headquarters spans 14 floors 64; reception walls in these towers are long and bare, so one 300 cm work reads better than several small ones, an inference from the fit-out descriptions.
Size guide at a glance
Sizes are for a single work unless stated; widen a triptych by 10–15% for the gaps. Heights are to the centre of the work. Evidence column gives the room dimension the size is derived from.

When should you go over 2 metres?
Whenever the wall is 6 m or longer, the ceiling is 4 m or higher, or the room seats more than 12; and always in a stair void. The reference is the SAR 10 million-plus North Riyadh house: plots of 600–2,500 m², 1,100–1,200 m² built, three to seven majlis and 32-seat dining rooms, giving on the order of 6–10 reception-grade walls of 6–12 m and a programme of 8–15 large works, mostly 2–3 m horizontals with one or two 2 m-plus verticals, a derived count rather than a survey 155. A three-year-old Al Narjis palace lists seven majlis and three dining rooms 157.
The local supply thins out at exactly this point. Home Centre's largest hand-painted canvas is 200 × 150 cm at SAR 999 334; Bloomr's size filters stop at 200 × 100 cm 327; Mille's panels are 220 × 150 cm as standard and 300 cm at most, in 6–14 weeks 297; above that the market is artist originals such as Papillon's 273 × 231 cm Qays Al Sendi at SAR 70,000 11. That gap is where a made-to-order studio sits: iHomeArt's 1,455 originals list sizes up to 254 cm and every work can be painted larger, in about a week of painting plus 3–7 days of transit, with progress photos and stage-by-stage approval, which matters more at this scale because a 350 cm canvas cannot go back on a shelf. iHomeArt supplies each work rolled, stretched or framed; for a 3 m piece the rolled canvas is the compact option (courier rate guides treat any piece with one dimension over 100 cm as oversize 41), stretched on arrival by the Riyadh trade — Zaitia delivers and installs in Riyadh and works with more than 150 interior design offices 12.
Which finish and frame suit Saudi interiors and the climate?
Stretched on a deep bar and hung frameless, or in a slim gold, champagne, black or wood frame, for the neutral majlis; a floating frame in wood or black for the family hall; never delivered as loose fabric. The frame finishes Saudi retailers offer for majlis pieces are black, white, wood, champagne, gold, beige and silver 83, which sit with the sand, cream, terracotta and gold palette of Riyadh reception wings 124 and the marble, brass and natural wood of the modern majlis 307. A Saudi one-star Amazon review complains that a calligraphy canvas arrived 'without a frame, just fabric' 301: specify stretched or framed on delivery, or local stretching, and say so on the quote. Home Centre's 200 × 150 cm hand-painted canvas is canvas over a 5 cm polystyrene panel 335 and Mille's panels carry a UV-protective coating and a 24-month warranty 297; a 2 m-plus original belongs on a timber stretcher with a UV varnish, at least that standard, an inference from those two specifications rather than a Saudi rule. Hard polished surfaces become acoustically fatiguing within 40 minutes of a full gathering 91, one argument for a heavily textured canvas over a large glazed frame in a marble majlis. On the coast, Jeddah villas are listed '3 minutes from the sea' 168 and the new resorts sit on the Red Sea 204; no Saudi source in this corpus specifies framing for humidity, so a sealed, varnished stretched canvas rather than a paper-backed or glazed work is our inference for those rooms. iHomeArt supplies rolled, stretched or framed in gold, silver, black, white or wood.

Questions buyers in Saudi Arabia ask
- What size painting does a Saudi majlis need?
- For a villa majlis with a 5 m wall and a 3.2 m ceiling, 200–250 cm (79–98 in) wide 149150; for a palace-tier majlis with 7.4 m walls and a 4.2 m ceiling, 300–350 cm (118–138 in) as a panoramic or triptych 90. Local guides put the canvas at 50–75% of the wall behind the seating 83290.
- How high should a painting hang above majlis seating?
- Keep the lower edge 15–25 cm above the sofa back, the rule a Saudi retailer publishes 290; with a 121 cm modular sofa back that is about 135–145 cm off the floor 90. Centre the work at 145–155 cm in a 3 m room and 165–180 cm under a double-height ceiling, the comparable UAE guidance 163.
- Is a 3-metre painting too big for a Riyadh villa?
- Not in the reception rooms of a SAR 10 million-plus house, where walls run 6–12 m and dining rooms seat 32 155156. In a 300–400 m² plot villa with a 26 m² majlis the longest wall is about 5 m 150, so 200–250 cm is the sensible ceiling there; 3 m suits the double-height entrance as a vertical 148.
- What size suits a Riyadh penthouse or a compound villa?
- 100–150 cm (39–59 in) per wall, horizontal or square, centred at 145–155 cm. Riyadh apartments above SAR 4 million run only 130–339 m², so walls are villa-room length under tower ceilings 171; expatriate compound villas of 240–300 m² are usually furnished, so the art is tenant-scale 172. Hanging heights follow the UAE comparable 163.
- Which format suits a double-height entrance hall?
- A vertical 120–150 cm wide by 200–300 cm tall, or a stacked pair, centred at 165–180 cm. Two 2.70–3.50 m floors plus slabs give a stair void of roughly 6–7.5 m, the one place in a villa where that height is proportionate 148; double-height halls now appear even on 240 m² plots 177.
- Can a painting be larger than the 200 × 150 cm sold in Saudi stores, and how does it arrive?
- Local chains stop at 200 × 150 cm and made-to-order panels at 300 cm 297334. iHomeArt lists sizes up to 254 cm (100 in) and paints any work larger to order, supplied rolled, stretched or framed; for a 3 m piece the rolled canvas is the compact choice, stretched on arrival by a Riyadh gallery-store such as Zaitia 12.
- Which frame finish works in a neutral Saudi majlis?
- Saudi retailers offer black, white, wood, champagne, gold, beige and silver frames for majlis pieces 83, matching the sand, cream, terracotta and gold palette of Riyadh reception wings 124. Frameless stretched or a slim gold or wood frame reads best against marmorino walls and gilded pilasters 90; avoid delivery as loose fabric 301.
