Who buys art at scale in Oman, and what do they hang?
Hotels and the state buy paintings in volume; households buy small. ArtReview reported in April 2025 that private collecting for home display is not an established practice in Oman because the domestic sphere is barred to non-relatives 49, and at Muscat's Affordable Art Show in December 2024 exhibiting artists complained that local taste favours small decorative prints over large-scale conceptual work 49. The wealth base is narrow: GDP per capita was USD 19,947 in 2025, the lowest of the six GCC states 145.
Hospitality is the volume channel, and the unit of purchase is the room count: Bait Muzna's consultancy list records art for every room plus corridors and public areas at Marriott Salalah (2009, 237 rooms), Millennium Qurum (2016, 270 rooms) and Anantara Jebel Akhdar (2016, 33 villas and 80 rooms) 33. The St. Regis Al Mouj Muscat opened in June 2024 with 250 rooms and a collection by Omani painters Anwar Sonya, Alia Al Farsi and Hassan Meer alongside international names, plus a Meer mural of Muttrah in its bar 102. Mandarin Oriental Muscat (150 keys, June 2024) hangs figurative friezes in the lobby and runs of pastel-pink oils of the Jebel Akhdar rose harvest along its corridors 100101. Ahead sit 28 hotel projects with 4,789 rooms by the end of 2027 98. The room-tier art in the two 2024 flagships is credited to no named supplier 102.
The state is the other large buyer: since 2007 a Dutch agency has had nearly 20 European artists produce over 200 realist paintings of Omani landscapes, forts, oryx, horses and camels for palaces and government buildings 36, and 39 paintings by Omani artists were chosen for Muscat International Airport in 2018 on condition that each 'reflects Omani identity' 37. Corporate collecting is thin: the only bank named on the two Muscat galleries' consultancy pages is Oman Arab Bank (2013) 33 — which suggests office art in Oman is a furnishing decision, not a collection.
What does the local supply look like?
One gallery that posts prices, a second that does not, an expat-studio tier, four furniture chains — and no hand-painted work above 185 cm with a posted price. Bait Muzna, Oman's first commercial gallery (2000), closed in March 2025 and now offers only consultancy and framing 7; an August 2025 guide names Stal Gallery and Gallery Sarah at Bait Al Zubair as the commercial venues, with the Omani Society for Fine Arts as the non-commercial hub 8; a separate report describes Alia Gallery in Al Rusayl as the largest private gallery, but no price list for it was found 47. Only Stal posts prices: Omani originals run online from OMR 320 for 25 × 35 cm 4 to OMR 3,850 for Juma Al Harthy's 110 × 160 cm 'Nakhal Fort' 1; one-metre works run OMR 630–1,700 4. Larger works, such as Anwar Sonya's 180 × 110 cm 'Omani Drummers', are price on request 134, so there is no public benchmark for a 2 m Omani canvas 4153.
Below the gallery, a Muscat classified (September 2026) offers a 185 × 150 cm heritage oil 'for villas, majlis, hotels and offices' at OMR 700 111. Retail is print-led: IKEA Oman's range tops out at OMR 27.500 for a 179 × 112 cm nine-piece set 13; only 3 of Danube Home's 223 wall-art SKUs claim to be hand-painted, at OMR 22.30 for 80 × 120 cm 12; the largest canvas any chain stocks is 2XL Home's 250 × 150 cm at OMR 169–206, with no hand-painted claim 117. Per square metre that is about OMR 14–195 at the chains against roughly OMR 630–2,200 at Stal 41213117122; the middle band — a hand-painted 1–2 m canvas at roughly OMR 100–600 per m² — is served only by individual studios and classifieds: a Qurum studio at about OMR 340–390 per m² 11 and the OMR 700 classified at about OMR 250 per m² 111. Detail: the Oman art market.
How are the rooms laid out, and what scale do the walls need?
Muscat is a city of single-family villas on a standard 600 m² plot, and the villa plans reviewed put a formal majlis by the entrance; hotels open in runs of 150–270 rooms. A 2021 study of Muscat housing gives the standard plot as 600 m² and the single-family villa as the prevailing type 85. A Reehan Gardens villa at Al Mouj (457 m² built-up on 607 m², guide price OMR 425,000) places the entrance hall, living-dining room, majlis and a separate family sitting area on the ground floor, with five bedrooms above 80; from that area each reception room is in the order of 25–40 m² with main walls of roughly 5–7 m — a derived figure 80. Larger tiers: Al Mouj's Alaya villas exceed 900 m² 82 and a 908 m² Zunairah villa has a double-height foyer beside the majlis 81. The 2017 building rules put upper-floor residential rooms on residential-commercial plots at 2.8–3.4 m 84; reading that as the villa norm is our inference, and it leaves roughly 1.9–2.5 m of wall above a 90 cm seat back — again derived 84. A traditional majlis seats at least eight on floor seating or day beds 50, which in practice run along the walls, and a Muscat majlis guide names 'large landscape artwork above sofas' as the typical placement, with a matched-frame gallery wall as its alternative 118 — so one horizontal or panoramic canvas is the simpler brief.
Offices are delivered by turnkey fit-out contractors on 2–4 month programmes 67, and none of the seven Muscat studios and contractors checked states a policy on sourcing art 63 — by inference, art enters late, at furnishing stage 74. Hotels open in runs of 150–270 keys: Mandarin Oriental 150 100, St. Regis 250 102, and Millennium Qurum bought art for 270 rooms plus corridors and public areas 33. Room by room: homes, offices, hospitality and sizing.
Which subjects, palettes and textures fit Oman?
Heritage subjects, earth palettes and textured surfaces sell; nudity does not; abstraction is welcome when it carries local references. Stal Gallery's priced inventory is dominated by forts, wadis, Mutrah, weddings, drummers and palms, with pure abstraction a minority 4; its 2025 summer show set four figurative-heritage artists against two abstract ones, with impasto, textile and jute surfaces throughout 5133. Hotels follow the same brief: the St. Regis pairs Omani figuration and calligraphy with international names in 'oceanic tones, rich tan and local natural stone' 137, and Mandarin Oriental's rooms echo 'the blues of the sea and the dunes of the desert' 101. A Muscat fit-out firm lists 2025 interiors as terracotta, sand, olive and warm neutrals with emerald, sapphire and rust accents over matte stone and fluted panels 142; a majlis guide names light beige, sandy beige, terracotta and dusty rose 118. Omani motifs are Indian-Ocean cosmopolitan — Balochi, Sindhi, Zanzibari and Yemeni textile traditions 49 — alongside engraved silver, khanjars, carved doors and gypsum geometry 56. On the figure the sources pull two ways: National Geographic reports that Muscat's younger scene favours abstraction over figurative representation in line with Islamic tradition 136, yet clothed figures hang in the galleries and hotels and animals in the palaces 410236; the documented flashpoint is the depiction of women 53, and faceless figures in Omani dress are the usual compromise 136. One published Al Mouj villa by an expatriate-facing studio (2022) is a minimalist shell with no art specified 132 — the kind of room where large abstracts in sand, sea blue and terracotta fit. In full: styles.

How do buyers in Oman work with us?
Remotely, with proof at every stage — because 'hand-painted' is already an OMR 22 retail label in Muscat. Danube Home sells 'handpainted' 80 × 120 cm canvases at OMR 22.30 121, so the phrase alone does not signal an original; the signature, certificate and progress photos do. Omani households already buy furnishings cross-border, mainly from China 17, and pay by card (43.92% of B2C e-commerce payments in 2025) 18. No Omani source describes how designers place art orders 32; classifieds show commissions routed through WhatsApp 113, and Muscat Cargo offers white-glove delivery of artwork in Muscat and Salalah 27.
iHomeArt works within those expectations. All 1,455 works are painted to order in any size, including 2 m-plus and panoramic formats, with palette changes possible; there are no prints and no stock. Buyers approve each stage by progress photos or video; painting takes about a week and transit 3–7 days, 10–13 days door to door, with free insured shipping by DHL, FedEx or USPS. Each piece is signed by the artist with a certificate of authenticity; quotes come within one business day; the minimum order is one piece with volume pricing from ten; finishes are rolled, stretched or framed (gold, silver, black, white, wood) — or rolled for framing in Muscat 7. This complements Omani painters rather than replacing them: Stal's OMR 320–3,850 band sits above 4, the OMR 14–195 per m² print market below 13122.
Questions buyers in Oman ask
- Can I buy an original painting over 2 metres off the shelf in Oman?
- No. The largest canvas any Muscat chain stocks is 2XL Home's 250 × 150 cm series at OMR 169–206, with no hand-painted claim 117; Stal Gallery's largest priced original is 110 × 160 cm at OMR 3,850 1, and its 180 cm and 500 cm works are price on request 1342.
- What do Muscat galleries and studios charge for originals?
- Stal Gallery lists Omani originals from OMR 320 for 25 × 35 cm to OMR 3,850 for 110 × 160 cm, with one-metre works at OMR 630–1,700 (September 2026) 41. A Qurum expat studio charges OMR 60–210 for 40 × 40 to 90 × 60 cm 11; a classified asks OMR 700 for 185 × 150 cm 111.
- How big is the wall in an Omani majlis?
- In a 457 m² Al Mouj villa the reception rooms work out at roughly 25–40 m² with main walls of about 5–7 m — a derived figure 80; upper-floor rooms on residential-commercial plots are regulated at 2.8–3.4 m, which we take as the villa norm 84. A majlis seats eight or more on floor seating or day beds 50, and a Muscat majlis guide names large landscape art above the sofas as the typical placement 118.
- Which subjects should we avoid in Oman?
- The sources differ. National Geographic says the younger Muscat scene favours abstraction over figurative work in line with Islamic tradition 136; at the same time animals, horses and clothed figures hang in palaces, hotels and galleries 36102, and the documented controversy concerns the depiction of women 53. Forts, silver and khanjars are mainstream heritage motifs 56. Quranic calligraphy is valued, so any text must be accurate — an inference 55.
- What does the Salalah market look like?
- Salalah is a different market. No Salalah gallery surfaced in this research; the retail offer there is Danube Home's OMR 22–43 framed calligraphy and 'handpainted' canvases, which it delivers to Salalah 12. Bait Muzna's consultancy supplied Marriott Salalah's 237 rooms in 2009 33, and the pipeline adds Oman's first Rixos and about 2,000 TUI rooms 98. Delivery to Salalah and the mountain resorts is covered on the hospitality page.
- How long does a made-to-order painting take to reach Oman?
- About 10–13 days door to door: roughly a week to paint plus 3–7 days in transit, with free insured shipping by DHL, FedEx or USPS. For comparison, a Muscat furniture chain quotes 7–10 working days for furniture delivery 25, and Asyad Express delivers domestically within 24–72 hours 29.
