Who in Oman commissions art for offices and institutions?
The documented buyers are the state, the airport authority, one bank, one fertiliser company and the hotels; no published art programme was found for Petroleum Development Oman, OQ, the universities or the clinics, so what follows is who is documented, not everyone who buys.
Government and the Royal Court. Since 2007 the Dutch agency Enterprise & Art has had nearly 20 European painters produce more than 200 paintings for the Royal Court and Royal Estates Affairs, for palaces and government buildings across Oman: landscapes, oryx, Arabian leopard, gazelles, horses, camels and forts 3678. The Omani Society for Fine Arts, established in 1993, states its aim as safeguarding Omani identity in harmony with the country's heritage, which frames what public bodies expect art to do 52.
The airport. Oman Airports selected 39 paintings by Omani artists for the terminal opened in March 2018, from files submitted by the Omani Society for Fine Arts, on condition that each work reflects Omani identity 37. In March 2022 three paintings from Alia Al Farsi's 'Voyager' series were installed in the Primeclass Lounge 38.
Banks. Bank Muscat's headquarters in Al Seeb is a 320,000 sq ft campus of four buildings on a glass-covered public street that blends contemporary style with mashrabiyas and sky bridges; its published description does not mention an art collection 40. It hosted an exhibition by Omani artist Safiya Al Bahlani in December 2012 41. Oman Arab Bank (2013) is the only bank on Bait Muzna's art-consultancy client list, which otherwise runs to hotels 33.
Corporates. Oman India Fertiliser Company financed the 'Oryx Caravan', 40 life-size fibreglass oryxes painted by Omani and expatriate artists and shown in Muscat's Ministries District, which its manager Hassan Meer called the first public art exhibition of its kind in Oman 42. Stal Gallery markets a corporate line — curating office collections and commissioning artists for lobby art, office prints and sculpture 34 — yet both Muscat consultancies name hotels, not banks or headquarters, as their main institutional clients 34. Dubai consultancies prospect the market — Artelier lists a Muscat villa but no Omani corporate project 43, Art Painting Lab advertises corporate consultancy across the GCC including Oman 44.
New Lines Magazine reports that Oman's art scene lacks support from private institutions and government and lags Qatar and Saudi Arabia in institutional cultural investment 46, which suggests the office buyer is more often a fit-out project than a collection.
What scale and format does each corporate space need?
Wall sizes follow from the building rules and from what hotels and galleries hang: the 2017 building-permit regulations set the ground floor of residential-commercial plots at 4–4.8 m internal height, against 2.8–3.4 m for upper residential floors 84, and the largest Omani original listed at Stal Gallery in September 2026 is 110 × 160 cm 1153. The guidance below is derived from those figures, not from a survey of offices.
Lobby and reception. In the two flagship 2024 Muscat hotel openings, art concentrates in lobbies and bars — a brass-and-bronze sculpture and colourful friezes at Mandarin Oriental, an expansive Hassan Meer mural of Muttrah in the St. Regis bar — commissioned from named Omani painters 101102. A 4–4.8 m ground floor 84 leaves a wall a single 160 cm canvas cannot hold; a panoramic of 229–254 cm (90–100 in), or a matched pair, reads at reception distance, which is why Stal's corporate offer leads with lobby art 34.
Boardroom. No Omani boardroom is documented with its art. The inference from state commissions (realist forts, wildlife and landscape 36) and from the calligraphy-abstraction the Ministry of Culture backs — 63 works by 47 artists at the 'Ink' exhibition in October 2025 54 — is that a boardroom end wall carries one horizontal work with a heritage or calligraphic reference rather than a purely formal abstract. On the figure the sources differ: National Geographic reports that the younger Muscat scene favours abstraction over figurative representation in line with Islamic tradition 136, while stylised figures, horses and oryx hang in palaces and galleries 36 and the documented controversy concerns the depiction of women 53. Nudes appear in none of the listings reviewed 53.
Corridors and open-plan. Mandarin Oriental's guest corridors carry a run of pastel-pink oils on one theme, the Jebel Akhdar rose harvest 101, which is the model for an office corridor: a series of the same size and register, 100–150 cm (39–59 in), rather than a mix of subjects.
Executive floors. The executive majlis follows the domestic one: seating runs along the walls, so the band above seated eye level is the display zone and a horizontal or panoramic format suits it better than a tall vertical 50; the head of the room, where the eldest and most distinguished guests are served first 51, is where the principal work is read. The Royal Court's realist wildlife and forts 36 are the chairman's-floor register; the abstraction that sells in Muscat encodes desert, sea, palm and textile patterns rather than pure colour-field work 5.
Waiting areas. A Muscat private seller markets a 185 × 150 cm realist oil to villas, majlis, hotels and offices at OMR 700 (September 2026) 111, and the largest decorative canvas stocked by a Muscat chain is 2XL Home's 250 × 150 cm canvas 'Painting' at OMR 169–206, process unverified (September 2026) 117. Here the palette matters more than the subject: Hornbill Interiors describes 2025 Omani interiors as terracotta, sand, olive and warm neutrals with emerald, sapphire and rust accents, on matte stone and fluted panels 142.
Which catalogue cuts fit Omani offices and institutions?
The cuts below are live counts from the 1,455-work catalogue, chosen against the registers the evidence documents: earth tones and gold for the majlis-style executive floor 50142; geometric gold for the Islamic-ornament vocabulary of gypsum plasterwork and calligraphy 5654; sea blues for the coastal offices of Al Mouj and Shatti Al Qurum, where the St. Regis interiors run in oceanic tones and tan 102; wildlife in earth tones for the state's realist taste 36; and works listing a 250 cm size for the lobby walls no Muscat gallery stocks 153. Every work is painted to order in any size, palette changes are possible, and there are no prints in the range.
From the catalogue
Textured & Plaster in sand, beige, cream and terracotta — the earth-tone majlis palette 119
Geometric works in gold, beige, cream and white — the Islamic-ornament register 139
Abstract in sea blue, turquoise and sand — the coastal resort palette 150
Horses, birds and wildlife in earth and neutral tones 78
Landscapes in sand, ochre, clay and olive — mountain, wadi and dune tones 177
Contemporary Minimalist in white, cream, beige and grey — for Al Mouj-style contemporary villas 82
What does a corporate buyer in Oman need from a supplier?
Proof, dates and a delivery plan. Oman's e-commerce regulations, amended on 27 October 2024, require sellers based in Oman or represented there to display products accurately, state the location, date and method of delivery and publish a clear return policy 23; a foreign studio is not bound by them, which is a reason to ask for the same items in writing. Under the Consumer Protection Law a buyer of a defective good is entitled to repair, exchange or return on presenting the receipt, with no exemption found for custom-made goods 24; yet the Consumer Protection Authority recovered only OMR 24,500 from 1,851 e-commerce complaints logged to August 2025 19, so a purchaser's real protection is the paperwork. Danube Home Oman sells a 'handpainted' 80 × 120 cm canvas at OMR 22.30 (September 2026) 12, so the phrase alone says nothing about originality.
The documented channels set the benchmark for a package: Bait Muzna's consultancy covers sourcing, framing, transport and installation and lists projects by room count — 270 rooms, corridors and public areas at Millennium Qurum (2016) 33; Stal bundles concept, commissioning, framing, packing and transport 34. Muscat Cargo lists artwork among the items its white-glove service carries inside, unboxes and inspects 27; Asyad Express caps its own international parcels at 30 kg 29, so a large stretched canvas travels with DHL or FedEx 30. No Omani source describes how offices place orders, so ordering habits are unverified 32; the one documented expectation is to price in OMR plus USD or EUR 114. Fit-outs run 2–4 months with 6–12 weeks of execution 67, and the contractors lead with joinery, gypsum and MEP 74, so the art order usually lands inside the execution window.
What to ask for, per work, follows from that:
- A spec sheet with reference code, size in cm and inches, orientation and finish, so the contractor can plan fixings before the canvas arrives.
- A certificate of authenticity signed by the artist, since the receipt is the buyer's only statutory lever 24 and the retail 'handpainted' label proves nothing 12.
- Progress photos or video with stage-by-stage approval, the quality-control role the gallery consultancies otherwise perform 3334.
- A dated delivery method and staged delivery by floor, the standard Oman's 2024 rules set for local sellers 23 and the one a 6–12 week execution window needs 67.
iHomeArt's verified terms map onto that list: about 1 week to paint plus 3–7 days transit, 10–13 days door to door; free insured shipping by DHL, FedEx or USPS; every piece signed with a certificate of authenticity; progress photos or video with stage-by-stage approval; quotes within 1 business day; minimum order 1 piece, volume pricing from 10; rolled, stretched or framed finishes. Delivering a floor at a time is a scheduling choice within those terms, not a separate service.

Questions buyers in Oman ask
- Do Omani banks and corporates buy paintings for their headquarters?
- Rarely in any documented way. Oman Arab Bank (2013) is the only bank on a Muscat gallery's consultancy list, Bank Muscat's published headquarters description mentions no art collection, and both Muscat consultancies name hotels as their main institutional clients; corporate activity is mostly sponsorship, such as OMIFCO's Oryx Caravan 33403442.
- What does the Omani state commission for government buildings?
- Realist painting of Omani subjects. Since 2007 the Royal Court and Royal Estates Affairs have commissioned more than 200 paintings of landscapes, oryx, Arabian leopard, gazelles, horses, camels and forts from nearly 20 European painters for palaces and government buildings, and the 2018 airport selection required each work to reflect Omani identity 367837.
- How large a canvas does a Muscat office lobby need, and can it be bought locally?
- A ground floor on a residential-commercial plot is 4–4.8 m high under the 2017 rules, which calls for a 229–254 cm panoramic or a matched pair; the largest Omani original listed at Stal Gallery in September 2026 is 110 × 160 cm, so lobby-scale work is commissioned rather than stocked 841153.
- Are figures and animals acceptable in Omani institutional art?
- In practice, yes. Oryx, leopards, horses and camels hang in palaces and government buildings and Anwar Sonya's drummers and wedding scenes sell at Stal 364. National Geographic does report that the younger scene favours abstraction over figurative work in line with Islamic tradition, and the documented controversy concerns the depiction of women 13653; faceless or stylised figures in traditional dress are the common compromise 136.
- What paperwork should a corporate buyer in Oman ask a foreign supplier for?
- A spec sheet, a signed certificate of authenticity, progress photos and a dated delivery method. Oman's 2024 e-commerce rules require locally based sellers to state delivery date and method and a return policy, statutory remedies depend on the receipt, and the Consumer Protection Authority recovered only OMR 24,500 from 1,851 complaints to August 2025 232419 — so with a foreign supplier the paperwork is the protection.
- When in a Muscat fit-out is the art ordered?
- Late, during execution. BMTC gives typical project timelines of 2–4 months with 3–6 weeks of design and approvals and 6–12 weeks of execution, and the sector is led by turnkey contractors whose service pages lead with joinery, gypsum and MEP, so wall art enters at furnishing stage; a 10–13 day painted-to-order lead time fits that window 6774.
