What subjects do Omani buyers actually hang?
Forts, wadis and old Muttrah, weddings and drummers, palms, silver and textile pattern, and Arabic letterforms recur across the gallery, the palaces and the new hotels; abstraction appears, mostly carrying the same references. Stal Gallery's online shop in September 2026 lists 'Nakhal Fort', the 'Nakhal Wadi' series, 'Old Mutrah', 'Manah Ruins', 'Omani Wedding Dancing', 'Omani Drummers', 'Camel Racing' and 'Man at the Friday Market Selling Goats', with abstract titles a minority of roughly 50 works 4. The top posted price, OMR 3,850, is a 110 × 160 cm oil of Nakhal Fort by Juma Al Harthy 1; Anwar Sonya's 'Omani Drummers' (2024, 180 × 110 cm) shows women in traditional dress with calligraphic patterns standing for song 134; H.H. Sayyida Afra's 'Shades of Oman' series works Omani fabrics and palm-frond shadows into mixed media 3.
Institutional buyers draw on the same list. Enterprise & Art, a Dutch agency, states that nearly 20 European painters have produced over 200 paintings for Royal Estates Affairs of Oman since 2007 — landscapes, oryx, Arabian leopard, gazelle, horses, camels and fortresses, painted from photographs sent from Oman 36. The St. Regis Al Mouj (2024) has an expansive Hassan Meer mural of Muttrah in its bar and the calligrapher Fahad Al Balushi in its collection 137; Mandarin Oriental Muscat's lobby holds a brass-and-bronze sculpture referencing Al Sadu weaving and Alia Al Farsi friezes of figures in local dress, with pastel-pink oils of the Jebel Akhdar rose harvest in the corridors 101.
Calligraphy is a living register: the 'Ink' exhibition in Ghala, Muscat (October 2025) showed 63 works by 47 artists combining Arabic calligraphy with abstraction 54. The heritage vocabulary was set out by the state quarterly Nizwa in 2000 — engraved silver, khanjars, coffee pots, carved doors, gypsum geometry with plant motifs, and the forts 56 — and Oman's 2026 Venice pavilion was built on the 'zanah' tradition of silver horse ornament 140. Where abstraction is shown it tends to encode heritage: Hussain Obaid's canvases at Stal in 2025 were described as rooted in tribal patterns, maritime heritage and desert iconography 5.
Which colours do Omani interiors want on the canvas?
Villas and majlis run on sand, terracotta and olive with gold; the coastal resorts on sea blue, tan and stone; both use jewel accents sparingly. Muscat fit-out firm Hornbill Interiors wrote in September 2025 that Omani interiors are dominated by terracotta, sand, olive green and warm neutrals, with jewel-tone accents of emerald, sapphire and deep rust 142. An expat majlis guide (April 2025) proposes soft neutrals, warm taupes, ivory, gold and greys with emerald, rich blue or burgundy accents, or light beige, sandy beige, rich terracotta and dusty rose 118.
Hotels tilt to the sea: the St. Regis Al Mouj describes 'oceanic tones imbued with rich tan and local natural stone' 137, and Mandarin Oriental's rooms echo the blues of the sea and the dunes of the desert 101. On canvas, Muscat Daily set Sonya's 'bold colours and emotional immediacy' beside Sayyida Afra's natural motifs and Moosa Omar's circular, textured canvases in the same 2025 show 133. In catalogue terms the villa palette is Beige, Cream, Terracotta, Brown and Gold with Green accents; the resort palette Blue, Teal, Beige and White; Pink for corridors and guest rooms; Gray and Black for the minimalist minority.
How much texture, and which finish?
Texture is expected: impasto, textile and jute on canvas; moulded plaster and fluted stone on the wall; brass and bronze as the metal. Stal's 2025 summer exhibition paired Hassan Meer's thick impasto figures with Sayyida Afra's Omani fabrics and the late Moosa Omar's jute circles 5. The Marie Claire villa has moulded plaster walls of cascading wildflowers, fluted marble, brass ceilings and bronze-mirrored surfaces 65; Hornbill lists matte stone, fluted panels and 'organic surfaces' 142. A flat print reads thin against such walls.
'Hand-painted' carries little weight on its own. Danube Home Oman sells an 80 × 120 cm 'Marrakech' piece described as hand-painted by a named artist at OMR 22 on sale (list OMR 30) in September 2026 121, with black, gold, silver, white and oak frames across its range 12. What marks an original at Stal is the signature and, for the largest works, the frame — 'Signed front' on Nakhal Fort, 'Framed, signed' on the 170 × 500 cm 'Omani Wedding' 12. For a made-to-order canvas the equivalent proof is a work signed by the artist with a certificate of authenticity and stage-by-stage progress photos, delivered rolled, stretched or framed in gold, silver, black, white or wood.
What should a painting for Oman avoid?
The documented lines are the depiction of women, nudity and the accuracy of religious text; the clothed human and animal figure is hung in palaces, hotels and galleries, even though the younger scene leans abstract. National Geographic (December 2024) reports that Muscat's contemporary scene emphasises abstract work over figurative representation, reflecting Islamic traditions that avoid human and animal depiction, that Safiya Al Bahlani paints faceless figures in traditional dress, and that Budoor Al Riyami used naked Barbie dolls to discuss the female body without depicting nudity 136. Middle East Monitor calls photographer Eman Ali controversial for her 'unfiltered and empowered representation of women' 53. Against this, the Royal Estates commissions are oryx, leopards, horses and camels 36, Sonya's drummers are women in traditional dress 134 and the St. Regis bar carries a Muttrah mural 137. The fair reading, holding both sources: clothed, stylised or faceless figures and animals are hung without recorded objection; nudity and provocative treatment of women are not; and a buyer who wants no risk at all follows the younger scene into abstraction.
Religious calligraphy is exhibited and valued — a 2017 show at the Omani Society for Fine Arts hung 40 works of Quranic verses, hadith and poetry 55 — which suggests Quranic text should never be painted without a native reader checking the letterforms; an abstract that borrows the rhythm of script without spelling a verse avoids the risk. Critic Sarah Jilani wrote in ArtReview (April 2025) that private collecting for home display is not an established practice because the domestic sphere is barred to non-relatives 49 — which, in our reading, puts the display logic on the guest-facing majlis. Painter Saeed Al Alawi told Al-Ain in 2019 that Arab audiences still prefer to acquire foreign artworks 60; foreign provenance is no barrier, but a foreign-made canvas should be presented as complementing Omani painters.
Do tastes differ by generation and by city?
The established tier buys heritage figuration; the younger tier makes abstraction, calligraphy overlays and installation; the one Al Mouj villa interior published by a studio is a contemporary shell; outside Muscat the visible supply is retail. The priced works at Stal are forts, weddings and brides 4; the Royal Estates programme is wildlife and landscape 36. The Art Fair Guy (May 2024) says contemporary Omani artists are moving beyond landscapes and cultural motifs toward identity, gender and social norms 10. National Geographic profiles Humaid Al Aufi (27) painting bright colour blocks against white negative space and Al Riyami's photographic portraits with calligraphy overlays, and quotes a gallerist that 'now, 90% are thinking outside of the box' 136. The 2024 and 2026 Venice pavilions were installation rather than painting 139140, and Jilani noted a collage pairing the khanjar with a 1990s Chips Oman packet 49, which suggests the heritage set is now handled with irony as well as reverence.
By district: Al Mouj, which its developer says houses 19,000+ residents of 94 nationalities 154, is where Design Nomad's 2022 villa of 'clean, geometric lines' sits, its project page mentioning no art 132 — one project, but the minimalist and sea-blue cuts fit that register. Salalah has no gallery that surfaced in this research; Danube Home delivers its OMR 22–42 framed calligraphy and 'handpainted' canvases there 12, Bait Muzna's consultancy supplied Marriott Salalah in 2009 33, and the pipeline adds a Rixos and five TUI properties of about 2,000 rooms 98. Sonya's work is described as inspired by Dhofar 2, which suggests a Salalah brief can draw on monsoon green and coastline rather than Muscat's forts.
Questions buyers in Oman ask
- Is figurative painting acceptable in Omani homes and offices?
- In practice, yes, when clothed and non-provocative: Royal Estates commissions are horses, camels and wildlife 36, Sonya's drummers hang at Stal 134 and the St. Regis bar carries a Muttrah mural 137. National Geographic does report the younger scene favouring abstraction over figurative work in line with Islamic tradition, and some young artists avoid faces 136; the documented controversy concerns the depiction of women 53.
- Does abstraction sell in Oman?
- It is shown and hung, mostly with heritage references. Hussain Obaid's abstractions at Stal draw on tribal patterns, maritime heritage and desert iconography 5, and 'Ink' fused calligraphy with abstraction in 63 works 54. Purely abstract titles are the minority on Stal's shop 4.
- Is Arabic calligraphy safe to commission from a foreign studio?
- Calligraphy is mainstream — 47 artists in 'Ink' (2025) 54, and Sonya works it into abstraction 2. Religious text is exhibited and valued 55, so any verse must be checked by a native reader before painting; a calligraphic abstraction that spells no verse carries no such risk (inference).
- Do Omani interiors favour textured canvases over flat ones?
- The evidence points that way. Stal's 2025 summer show paired Hassan Meer's thick impasto with Sayyida Afra's Omani fabrics and Moosa Omar's jute circles 5133; a Muscat coastal villa is finished in moulded plaster, fluted marble and brass 65, and a local fit-out firm lists matte stone and fluted panels as the 2025 surfaces 142. Against those walls a flat print reads thin; relief, plaster and gold leaf hold their own.
- Do Salalah tastes differ from Muscat?
- Little is published. No Salalah gallery surfaced in this research; the retail offer there is Danube's framed calligraphy and canvases at OMR 22–42 12. Bait Muzna supplied Marriott Salalah in 2009 33 and Sonya draws on Dhofar 2, which suggests monsoon green and coastline for a Salalah brief.
- Are heritage motifs — khanjar, forts, silver — mainstream or kitsch?
- Mainstream. Nizwa magazine defines silver, khanjars, carved doors, gypsum geometry and forts as Oman's ornament vocabulary 56, the 2026 Venice pavilion is built on silver horse ornament 140, and a 2022 National Day show at Bait Muzna centred on a kummah embroidered with the khanjar, Grand Mosque and camel 57.
