Who buys art at scale in Spain, and what do they hang?
Four groups buy at scale: owners of large homes, many of them foreign; corporate collections; hotels and members' clubs; and the fair and gallery circuit at the top. UBS counted 1,202,000 US-dollar millionaires in Spain at end-2024 187, while Capgemini counted 246,600 people with USD 1 million or more in investable assets in 2024 190; the difference is property, since financial assets are only about one third of gross household wealth in Spain 187. Foreigners are about half of luxury home buyers nationally and 70–90% on the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca (April 2026) 194.
Corporate Spain hangs a lot of art: Banco de España holds more than 3,500 works (October 2025) 36, Telefónica about 1,100 47, DKV over 850 across its offices 41 and the law firm Uría Menéndez more than 200 in its Madrid offices 40. International law firms in Madrid rent at 2% of a work's sale price per month 50. Hotels are adding walls quickly: Four Seasons Madrid holds nearly 1,500 works (2024) 117 and Soho House's Barcelona Pool House over 80 by nearly 30 local artists (November 2025) 126.
At home the pattern is one large canvas rather than a wall of small ones: El Mueble named the single XL painting above the sofa the 2025 living-room trend 133, and Westwing's 2024 trend list ranks abstract art first 66. A 300 m² Salamanca flat published in October 2024 hangs geometric abstracts by living Spanish artists in every room 67.
What does the local supply look like, and what does it cost?
Three ladders, with a gap between them. A gallery original typically starts around EUR 3,000 and the standard commission is 50% (March 2026) 154; ARCOmadrid 2026 offered works from EUR 500 to EUR 4.2 million 1. A Spanish price guide built on more than 8,000 transactions puts a 70 × 100 cm oil at EUR 900–1,800 and a 120 × 150 cm at EUR 1,800–4,500 (2025) 3. Artenet, a direct-from-artist platform, lists 12,023 canvases, most at EUR 150–600 6.
At the home-store end, Westwing Spain prices its canvas category at EUR 59.99–699, and its largest piece, 131 × 163 cm, is a digital print 161; its 102 × 102 cm hand-painted canvas costs EUR 439, and the largest hand-painted canvas found at a national chain is El Corte Inglés's 123 × 153 cm (September 2026) 160162. The importer KunstLoft's Spanish site goes to 200 × 150 cm, but only in fixed catalogue formats 231.
The importer tier is large by volume and small by value. Spain’s recorded imports of paintings, drawings and collages from China were USD 2.12 million and 195,847 kg in 2024, roughly double 2023 224: 1.9% of the value but 60% of the weight of all painting imports 226, or about USD 10.8 per kg (inference) 224. At 1.5–2.5 kg per canvas that is on the order of 80,000–130,000 pieces, of the same order as the 88,000-item figure sometimes quoted for 2024, which could not be verified (inference) 224. The wholesaler Iglú Tiendas sells this tier to shops, designers and hotels from a EUR 250 minimum order in sizes up to 60 × 120 cm, without naming the origin 165.
The gap is a made-to-order original above 150 cm (59 in), sized to the wall and priced between the decor ladder and the gallery ladder. Price tables, gallery lists and platforms are on the local supply page.
What do the rooms and walls in Spain need?
Three wall types recur: the 3.5 m-plus period wall of Madrid and Barcelona, the double-height void of a Costa del Sol or Ibiza villa, and the 2.5–3 m stone-and-beam wall of a finca (derived from the listings below) 102.
Homes. Whole-floor flats in Salamanca and Recoletos run 350–680 m² with ceilings above 3.5 m (2025) 9798; renovated ones merge salón and dining into one open room with a single long wall 98, which supports 180–250 cm (71–98 in) horizontals or panoramics (derived) 97. La Zagaleta villas list at 862–1,400 m² on 3,035–11,144 m² plots 101, and several listings describe double-height halls and living rooms 102, a void of roughly 5.5–6.5 m that wants a 2 m-plus (79 in) vertical, a stacked pair or a triptych (derived) 102. Mallorca fincas have stone-walled rooms of domestic scale 107, and Ibiza villas of 300–400 m² sit on 4,500–6,000 m² plots with terraces rivalling the interior, so the salón wall is often the single art wall 110. Room by room on the homes page.
Offices. Fit-out averages EUR 1,083/m² in Madrid and EUR 1,138/m² in Barcelona, with 75% of Madrid leasing in Grade A and B+ buildings (2025) 84; none of the Spanish fit-out projects listed by JLL’s Tétris mentions artwork 85, which suggests art is specified by the tenant after the fit-out (inference). See the offices page.
Hospitality. About 775 new hotels and 52,000 rooms are projected for 2025–2028 114. Madrid five-stars reproduce a few originals across their room types (Four Seasons: 75 proposals) 117, while coastal hotels such as Mondrian Ibiza hang originals by contemporary artists (2024) 123. See the hospitality page and the size guide for cm and inches by wall type.
Which styles fit Spanish walls?
Earth palettes, texture, abstraction and Mediterranean light; folkloric and devotional subjects are minority tastes. Kave Home’s 2026 guide names soft abstracts, botanicals in muted greens, textured works with sand finishes and plaster reliefs, on a palette of beige, sand, warm grey and caramel 171. Hola.com calls geometric designs ‘an infallible choice’ for the salón (May 2025) 64. Casa Decor 2025 hung 100 × 140 cm and 110 × 195 cm abstracts and gold-leaf works in ochre and earth tones 169; Tàpies’ matter painting, marked by a 220-work centenary show in 2024, is the domestic root of that textured taste (inference) 183.
Heritage references are Sorolla and the sea rather than flamenco. The Sorolla centenary closed with more than 2.5 million visits (January 2025) 180, and a Spanish reproduction retailer’s best-sellers are led by Van Gogh, Monet and Kandinsky with Sorolla and Miró behind, with no bullfighting or religious scenes (September 2026) 61. Blue-and-white and geometric vocabulary comes from the azulejo tile tradition, which is why cobalt-and-white canvases read as native in Andalusian and Balearic houses (inference) 70. Colour is returning: Spanish audiences are leaving white minimalism for bold colour (April 2026) 142.
Sensitivities: only 15.9% of Spaniards called themselves practising Catholics in September 2026, fewer than declared atheists 55; 58% opposed bullfighting in a 2016 poll and only 7% of 16–24-year-olds supported it 60; flamenco dancers, toreros and fans read to a Spanish designer as the ‘españolada’ of souvenir shops 71. Frames are thin black, white or aluminium so the work is the protagonist (2026) 185. Subject by subject on the styles page.

How do buyers in Spain work with iHomeArt?
Remotely, by progress photos, with size and palette set to the wall. Spanish households already buy across borders: 51% of cross-border parcels received in Spain in 2025 came from China, and 73% of those orders arrived with free shipping 21, and 86% of Spanish online buyers want a clear payment confirmation (September 2025) 23. Made-to-order goods are excluded from Spain’s 14-day right of withdrawal 26, and Spanish commission studios such as DecoPared send progress images and do not ship until the client is satisfied 138.
iHomeArt works the same way. Each of its 1,455 works is painted to order in any size, with 2 m-plus and panoramic formats normal and palette changes possible; there are no prints and no stock. Painting takes about one week and insured transit by DHL, FedEx or USPS 3–7 days, so 10–13 days door to door, with free insured shipping. Progress photos or video come with stage-by-stage approval, every piece is signed with a certificate of authenticity, quotes arrive within one business day, and the minimum order is one piece with volume pricing from ten.
Finishes are rolled, stretched or framed in gold, silver, black, white or wood. Buyers who prefer a local framer can take the canvas rolled: a workshop in Calpe quotes EUR 100–150 to stretch and reinforce a 100 × 150 cm canvas in 2–5 days (2025) 31.
Questions buyers in Spain ask
- Who buys art at scale in Spain?
- Four groups: owners of large homes, about half of them foreign nationally and 70–90% on the Costa del Sol 194; corporate collections, from Banco de España's 3,500-plus works down to law firms and insurers 364041; hotels, with nearly 775 openings projected for 2025–2028 114; and the gallery and fair circuit, worth about EUR 330 million a year 154.
- Where does a made-to-order original fit between Spanish retail and galleries?
- In the band the shelves do not serve. The largest hand-painted canvas found at a Spanish chain is 123 × 153 cm (48 × 60 in), the importer tier sells fixed catalogue formats, and gallery originals start around EUR 3,000 with a 50% commission 162231154. A double-height hall or a 6–8 m salón wall needs 200–300 cm (79–118 in) cut to the wall, which is what made-to-order supplies.
- Is buying a painting remotely unusual in Spain?
- No. 51% of the cross-border parcels Spain received in 2025 came from China and 73% of those orders shipped free 21; 86% of Spanish online buyers want a clear payment confirmation (September 2025) 23. Spanish commission studios such as DecoPared already sell to order by progress images 138. iHomeArt quotes within one business day and confirms each stage by photo or video.
- Can I approve a painting before it ships?
- Yes. iHomeArt sends progress photos or video with stage-by-stage approval, and every piece is signed with a certificate of authenticity. Made-to-order goods fall outside Spain’s 14-day withdrawal right 26, and Spanish commission studios such as DecoPared use the same approval-before-shipping practice 138.
- How long does a made-to-order painting take to reach Spain?
- About one week to paint plus 3–7 days of insured transit by DHL, FedEx or USPS, so 10–13 days door to door, with free shipping. For comparison, a Spanish commission studio quotes 10–14 days of production 7, and specialised bulky-goods carriers in Spain take 10–15 working days (2026) 29.
- Do the designers working on Spanish villas brief in English?
- Largely, yes. Ambience Home Design reports Golden Mile and La Zagaleta projects for clients from the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Hong Kong 80; Mallorca's design market includes British designer Justine Knox, German-run Stork Design and Berlin–Palma CARLO Design 87151; and foreigners are 70–90% of prime Costa del Sol buyers 194. This guide is written for those designers as well as for Spanish nationals.
