What art is for sale in Spain, and what does it cost?

Spain's art supply is deep at the top and the bottom and thin in the middle. The gallery trade turns over about EUR 330 million a year and a gallery original typically starts around EUR 3,000 154. Below it, national chains sell 'hand-painted' canvases from about EUR 109 to EUR 529, the largest hand-painted piece found at a chain measures 123 × 153 cm, and the one wholesaler with a published size range stops at 60 × 120 cm 161162165. Spain's recorded imports of paintings from China doubled between 2023 and 2024 to USD 2.12 million and 195,847 kg, which was 60% of the weight but 1.9% of the value of all the paintings the country imported that year 224226. The hand-painted original of 150–300 cm that a Salamanca salón, a La Zagaleta hall or a hotel lobby needs is the band local shelves serve least (inference).

What do Spain's galleries and artists sell, and what does it cost?

Gallery originals from about EUR 3,000, artist-direct originals from a few hundred euros, and a primary market of about EUR 330 million a year, over 40% of it in Madrid and about 25% in Catalonia 154. Spain has held roughly 1% of the global art market, about seventh alongside Japan, since 2012 155. The standard gallery commission is 50% and 'accessible' schemes such as By Invitation run EUR 1,000–2,000 154. ARCOmadrid 2026 brought 211 galleries from 30 countries, 34% of them Spanish, with works from EUR 500 for small gold-leaf collages at Ponce+Robles, whose director asks her artists for small or paper works so they stay affordable, up to EUR 4.2 million for a 1917 Juan Gris 1. The trade is under strain: 120 galleries closed together in protest in early 2026, for a day in January by one account and for a week in February by another, and their consortium says galleries hold about 76% of the domestic market's value 156200.

The only Spain-wide price ladder by size is a 2025/26 guide from CalleArteMas, a direct-sales platform that competes with galleries and gives no sample sizes, so treat it as a seller's view 3. It prices an oil or acrylic at EUR 450–750 for 30 × 40 cm, EUR 900–1,800 for 70 × 100 cm and EUR 1,800–4,500 for 120 × 150 cm, about EUR 1,000–2,500 per m² 3. By career stage a 70 × 100 cm work is EUR 400–800 for artists in their first three years, EUR 700–1,500 at three to seven years and EUR 1,400–3,000+ for consolidated names; regionally the same size runs EUR 900–1,800 in Madrid, EUR 850–1,600 in Barcelona and EUR 500–1,100 in Seville 3.

Live listings sit inside those bands. Arts Fité in Sabadell prices large abstract oils by Joaquín Torres at EUR 2,950 for 200 × 160 cm, with certificates, in an abstract category of EUR 185–2,950 5. Hispangallery in Altea lists a 100 × 100 cm oil of the Altea harbour at EUR 965 and a 150 × 90 cm landscape at EUR 1,350; its smaller stock is boats, beaches, fighting bulls and a 25 × 25 cm still life at EUR 225 4. On Artenet, a zero-commission marketplace listing 12,023 paintings on canvas, most between EUR 150 and 600, Marita A. Guardia sells Mediterranean reef abstracts at EUR 900 for 130 × 81 cm and Antonio Sánchez Cabello a 100 × 100 cm abstract at EUR 450 6.

In the villa markets the galleries are real but publish little. Marbella's MUAC association groups Yusto/Giner, Isolina Arbulu, Reiners, Es Arte and Nítido, held its sixth Gallery Weekend on 13–16 November 2025 and recommends visits by appointment; no prices are published 157. A June 2025 show at Villa El Martinete, marketed to 'international collectors and investors', hung resin, gold-leaf and textured mixed-media pieces by Costa del Sol artists, again without sizes or prices 220. Palma is stronger: Art Cologne Palma Mallorca (9–12 April 2026) drew 88 galleries from 20 countries, 32 Spanish and 26 German, including Kewenig, Pelaires, Xavier Fiol and Baró 158. Pelaires, founded in 1969, is one of Spain's oldest contemporary galleries 159.

What do the home stores sell, and how big does it go?

Canvas prints from EUR 35 and 'hand-painted' canvases from about EUR 109 to EUR 709, with the largest hand-painted piece at a national chain at 123 × 153 cm and only the importer KunstLoft offering fixed formats up to 200 × 150 cm 9162231. Prices are as listed in September 2026 unless stated.

Westwing Spain's canvas category runs from EUR 59.99 to EUR 699, its largest stocked piece, 131 × 163 cm, is a digital print, and its hand-painted band tops out at EUR 529 with sizes not shown in the listing view 161. KunstLoft's Spanish site lists 7,186 products under 'cuadros al óleo', ready to ship with a 100-day return period and no country of production stated 231. Home Original lists 29 hand-painted oils at roughly EUR 235–650 with size chosen at checkout, without saying whether painting happens in its Mollet del Vallès workshop 232. TodoCuadros ships from Madrid, sells copies painted '100% by hand' by 'expert copyists' at EUR 165–225 and originals at EUR 300–850, and does not say where the copyists work; its best-sellers are Van Gogh, Monet, Kandinsky and Sorolla 23361. Retail guidance points at larger single works, with Kave Home recommending one piece to 'resolve an entire wall' at about two-thirds of the sofa width 171, yet the largest hand-painted canvases found stocked by Spanish chains are 123 × 153 cm and 110 × 110 cm, and the importer tier sells fixed formats only, which suggests the wall-sized 150–300 cm (59–118 in) band is left to galleries, commissions and direct imports (inference) 162163231.

Who else supplies wall art: wholesalers, importers, marketplaces and framers

A wholesale tier that never names its country of origin, a recorded import flow from China that is large by weight and small by value, artist marketplaces that buyers say they trust more than anonymous canvas shops, and framers who stretch a rolled canvas in two to five days 16522613431.

Iglú Tiendas (Oviedo) is the visible wholesaler of hand-painted oils: EUR 250 minimum order, volume-tiered pricing with no open price list, abstract, floral and landscape ranges from 30 × 30 cm to 90 × 90 cm plus a 60 × 120 cm panoramic, sold to decoration shops, interior designers, hotels, restaurants and tourist lets 165. It describes the canvases as sourced 'directly from origin without intermediaries' with 'real brushstroke texture, no digital printing', yet names no country, while its tablecloths are marked 'Fabricado en España' 165. Across Iglú, KunstLoft, Home Original, TodoCuadros and the Málaga seller Decoartions, 'hand-painted' is argued against prints that 'deteriorate over time', and origin is left unaddressed 234. Shop owners can also buy through Spanish-language Chinese sourcing portals, and households order direct: 51% of the cross-border parcels Spain received in 2025 came from China 23721.

Trade statistics fill part of the silence about origin. Spain's recorded imports of paintings, drawings and pastels from China were USD 2,119,993 and 195,847 kg in 2024, up from USD 979,015 and 96,411 kg in 2023 224. 2024 was the peak: 2025 came in at USD 1.76 million and 133,521 kg, 17% lower by value but still 80% above 2023 225. Against all origins Spain imported USD 110,992,049 of paintings weighing 325,204 kg in 2024, so China supplied 1.9% of the value and 60% of the weight, about USD 10.8 per kg against USD 341 per kg for all origins 226224. At a rough 1.5–2.5 kg per stretched canvas that is on the order of 80,000–130,000 pieces, an estimate the Spanish series cannot confirm because it reports no piece count; the 88,000-item figure sometimes quoted for 2024 is of the same order but could not be verified (inference) 224. In Spanish-language perception 'Dafen' means the copy factory: a 2020 Murcia column recalls finished copies at 'twenty or thirty euros including canvas and pigments' sold to hypermarkets and to firms decorating their premises 235.

Buyers voice the distrust that follows. In a Madrid forum thread a user seeking large paintings, 'not prints or photos', found prices high and suitable sizes hard to find; one reply said of an online canvas shop 'no termino de fiarme' and another advised buying from emerging artists through Arte Informado, Madrid galleries and fairs, or artists selling on Wallapop 134. Marketplaces answer with named artists: Artenet charges no commission to buyer or seller 6; Singulart's Spanish storefront sells only originals, from about EUR 300 with an average near EUR 1,000, with certificates of authenticity 167; an April 2026 artist-studio guide prices established originals from EUR 800 and calls buying direct from the artist 'the option that has grown the most' 168. For offices, Esfera del Arte (Madrid, since 1994) rents Spanish contemporary works at 2% of sale price per month including insurance and credits half the rent toward purchase 50.

Framers are the last link. Pepe Davent in Calpe (Alicante) quotes EUR 60–100 to mount a 70 × 100 cm canvas on a reinforced stretcher and EUR 100–150 for 100 × 150 cm, with 2–5 days' turnaround; it accepts canvases that arrive rolled, warns that canvas rolled for a long time can lose flexibility, and quotes by WhatsApp from a photo and measurements 31. It stresses that 'no existe un precio único', and Madrid and Barcelona prices are likely higher (inference) 32. Spanish 2026 framing advice favours thin black, white or aluminium frames so 'the work is the protagonist' 185.

What does a square metre of wall art cost in Spain?

From about EUR 35 per m² for a printed canvas to EUR 1,000–2,500 per m² for a large oil in the national price guide and EUR 7,400–9,600 per m² at an established Canary Islands gallery, with the stocked 'hand-painted' tier at roughly EUR 200–450 per m² in between 93147161. Per-m² figures are our arithmetic on the cited price and size, at the dates given.

The 'hand-painted' label covers more than a threefold price range inside the chains alone, with no stated origin, while the same square metre from a Spanish artist selling direct costs EUR 450–860 and from a regional gallery EUR 770–1,120 161231654. With a gallery entry price of about EUR 3,000, and at least one ARCO gallery steering its artists toward small or paper formats to stay under EUR 1,500, the gallery ladder rarely yields a 2 m canvas at a decorative budget (inference) 1541.

Where do made-to-order originals fit?

In the gap between chain canvases that stop near 1.5 m and gallery originals from EUR 3,000 that are sold as they are rather than made to a wall's measurements 161162154. Spanish magazines now prescribe one XL canvas over the sofa rather than a composition: El Mueble's 2025 feature shows living-room works at 150 × 100 cm, 165 × 132 cm and 160 × 120 cm, the last available in custom sizes, and Hola.com says 'a big painting decorates better than many small ones' 13364. On the coast the sources are silent on what hangs: no villa listing or designer portfolio opened for Marbella, La Zagaleta, Sotogrande, Mallorca or Ibiza names a hung painting with artist and size, and La Zagaleta's homestyle page calls each villa 'a blank canvas' for the owner's stylists without mentioning art 210184. Spanish law already treats such work as approval-based rather than return-based: the 14-day withdrawal right for distance purchases does not apply to goods 'made to the consumer's specifications or clearly personalised' 2627.

Spain has its own commission studios, and they set the local benchmark: Angelote Art paints a 200 × 100 cm sea or beach scene to order for EUR 1,000 in 10–14 days, DecoPared in Madrid sends progress images and ships only when the client is '100% satisfied', and Rubén de Luis quotes each job from the client's photographs 71388. iHomeArt's offer sits in the same model at a different scale: 1,455 works painted to order in any size, with 2 m-plus and panoramic formats normal, palette changes possible, no prints or stock and no public prices, with progress photos or video approved stage by stage before dispatch; lead times, finishes and order terms are on the Spain hub. A canvas shipped rolled can be stretched locally at the EUR 100–150 a Calpe workshop quotes for 100 × 150 cm 31. What none of this replaces is the gallery tier: a consolidated Spanish artist's 70 × 100 cm at EUR 1,400–3,000+ carries a name and a resale market, and buyers who want that should go to ARCO, the Marbella galleries or Palma 3157158.

Questions buyers in Spain ask

What does an original painting cost in Spain?
A seller-published 2025/26 guide puts a 70 × 100 cm oil at EUR 900–1,800 in Madrid, EUR 850–1,600 in Barcelona and EUR 500–1,100 in Seville, and 120 × 150 cm at EUR 1,800–4,500; a Barcelona gallerist says a gallery original typically starts around EUR 3,000 3154.
How large do the hand-painted canvases in Spanish home stores go?
The largest found in September 2026 were El Corte Inglés's 'Nanda' at 123 × 153 cm (48 × 60 in) and Maisons du Monde's 'Basile' at 110 × 110 cm (43 × 43 in); Westwing's 131 × 163 cm top item is a digital print. The importer KunstLoft's Spanish site offers fixed formats up to 200 × 150 cm (79 × 59 in), at EUR 429–709 for its XXL band, but no stockist sizes to the wall 162163161231.
Where do the 'hand-painted' canvases sold in Spain come from?
The sellers checked (Iglú Tiendas, KunstLoft, TodoCuadros, Home Original, Decoartions) state no country of origin. Trade statistics show China supplied 60% of the weight but 1.9% of the value of Spain's painting imports in 2024, about USD 10.8 per kg, which points to bulk decorative canvas (inference) 165234226224.
What does it cost to stretch a rolled canvas in Spain?
A Calpe (Alicante) workshop quotes EUR 60–100 for a 70 × 100 cm canvas on a reinforced stretcher and EUR 100–150 for 100 × 150 cm, with 2–5 days' turnaround and quotes by WhatsApp; it accepts rolled canvases but warns that long-rolled canvas can lose flexibility. Madrid or Barcelona prices are likely higher (inference) 3132.
Which galleries serve Marbella, Mallorca and Ibiza buyers?
Marbella's MUAC groups Yusto/Giner, Isolina Arbulu, Reiners, Es Arte and Nítido, with a Gallery Weekend each November and visits by appointment; Palma has Kewenig, Pelaires (founded 1969), Xavier Fiol and Baró, and Art Cologne Palma brought 88 galleries in April 2026. None publishes prices online 157158159.
Is there a Spanish studio that paints to order?
Yes. Angelote Art publishes a size-based price list for sea and beach paintings, EUR 500 for 150 × 100 cm and EUR 1,000 for 200 × 100 cm, with 10–14 days' production; DecoPared (Madrid) sends progress images before shipping, and Rubén de Luis quotes each commission individually with no published prices 71388.
