Size guide for Spanish walls: piso, villa, finca and hotel, in cm and inches

In Spain the ceiling sets the size. The building code fixes a 2.50 m minimum in dwellings, a whole-floor Recoletos apartment lists ceilings above 3.5 m, a design-led Mallorca finca living room rises over 4 m, and La Zagaleta and La Reserva de Sotogrande villas are sold on double-height halls and lounges 9597214102212. Spanish retail and press guides add the rules of thumb: one large piece rather than several, about two-thirds of the sofa width, the centre at 1.50–1.65 m from the floor and 10–15 cm above the sofa back 65171173133. This guide turns those figures into size bands in centimetres and inches for each space, and marks where stocked canvases stop and made-to-order work begins 161231.

How big should a painting be on a Spanish wall?

Match the long side to the ceiling, not to the floor area: about 120–200 cm (47–79 in) in a standard flat, 180–250 cm (71–98 in) in a Salamanca or Pedralbes piso, 200–300 cm (79–118 in) in a double-height villa hall and 120–180 cm (47–71 in) on the stone wall of a finca 9597111102214. The ceiling heights below are sourced; the size bands are our inference from them, applying the rules Spanish guides publish (one large piece, about two-thirds of the sofa width, centre at 1.50–1.65 m) and rounding inches to the nearest whole number 65171173.

How high should it hang, and how wide against the sofa?

Centre the work at 1.50–1.65 m from the floor, keep it inside the sofa width and leave 10–15 cm above the sofa back 171173133. Kave Home's January 2026 guide puts the centre at 1.55–1.65 m and sizes a sofa picture at about two-thirds of the sofa width; Arternativas (April 2026) uses a visual centre about 150 cm from the floor and a '75% rule', no wider than 75% of the wall or of the furniture below 171173. Hola.com adds that the work should not exceed the sofa width, should sit about 15 cm above the sofa back, and that 'a big painting decorates better than many small ones' 64. El Mueble's 2025 XL feature specifies 10–15 cm between frame and sofa back and shows living-room canvases of 150 × 100 cm (59 × 39 in), 165 × 132 cm (65 × 52 in), 160 × 120 cm (63 × 47 in) and 180 × 118 cm (71 × 46 in) 133. These rules were written for the 2.50–2.70 m flat; in a 3.5 m-plus salón the eye level does not move, so the extra headroom goes into the top edge of a taller work rather than into a higher hang (inference) 9597.

When should a painting go over 2 m?

Go over 2 m when the wall is a double-height void, a 6–8 m salón wall or a hotel stair, and whenever the work will be read from more than one level 10297117. Three signals. First, the ceilings: Villa Niwa in La Reserva de Sotogrande, 4,322 m² built, sells on a 'spacious double-height lounge'; Drumelia's 'Heaven 11' in La Zagaleta on a double-height hallway opening to a full-width glazed living room; El Madroñal villas on 'techos de doble altura' 212211102. A void derived from two storeys at the 2.50 m minimum plus a slab is roughly 5.5–6.5 m, so a 150 cm canvas reads as a stamp (inference) 10295. Second, what Spanish designers already hang: Casa Decor 2025 placed a 110 × 195 cm (43 × 77 in) mixed-media work in the Piedra Ibiza lobby and a 100 × 140 cm (39 × 55 in) abstract in a suite, and a Lanzarote gallery's 'large paintings for the salón' run 101 × 163 cm to 146 × 114 cm (40 × 64 in to 57 × 45 in) at EUR 12,840–16,050 in September 2026 169147. Third, where stock stops: in the Spanish chains checked in September 2026 the largest canvas at Westwing is a 131 × 163 cm (52 × 64 in) digital print, El Corte Inglés's hand-painted 'Nanda' is 123 × 153 cm (48 × 60 in), Maisons du Monde's 'Basile' 110 × 110 cm (43 × 43 in), Home Original tops out at 150 × 120 cm (59 × 47 in) and the wholesaler Iglú Tiendas at 60 × 120 cm (24 × 47 in); the importer KunstLoft goes to 200 × 150 cm (79 × 59 in), but only in fixed catalogue formats 161162163232165231. That gap is where made-to-order fits: iHomeArt's catalogue lists sizes up to 254 cm (100 in), every work can be painted larger, painting takes about one week plus 3–7 days in transit, and progress photos are approved stage by stage.

Panoramic, diptych, triptych or a vertical series?

Use a panoramic on a long low wall, a vertical or stacked pair in a void, and a diptych or triptych where one canvas would be awkward to move or to hang 65102112. Hola.com's 2023 salón guide recommends a single large panoramic on a feature wall, or diptychs and triptychs 'arranged like a puzzle' 65. On Artenet, a 160 × 80 cm (63 × 31 in) Mediterranean abstract sells as a diptych, the practical way to move that width through a lift 6. The typology decides the rest. A Sarrià house of 815 m² built on a 456 m² plot is a vertical townhouse with stair voids and many medium walls, so a series of 100–140 cm (39–55 in) verticals up the stair suits it better than one 3 m work (inference) 112. A traditional Sotogrande villa with beamed ceilings and arched openings around a patio offers many medium walls rather than one void 104. A La Zagaleta hall wants a 2–3 m vertical or a triptych read from the upper gallery as well as the floor (inference) 102. In the glass-walled island villa the one solid wall often faces the view, so a 200–250 cm (79–98 in) panoramic seascape or blue abstract at 80–100 cm (31–39 in) high sits on it without crowding the glazing (inference) 106110. The catalogue holds 106 panoramic works and every one can be painted to a specified width.

What sizes do hotel rooms, lobbies and offices take?

Guest rooms take one 100–150 cm (39–59 in) horizontal above the headboard; lobbies, stairs and members' clubs take 2–3 m site-specific pieces; office receptions 150–250 cm (59–98 in) 12811784. Sir Victor Barcelona hangs an abstract by Bernat Daviu in each of its 91 rooms against neutral palettes 128. Four Seasons Madrid selected 75 proposals from fine-arts schools and reproduced them for its room and suite types, and hung a 1,500-brass-fragment installation on the curved wall by the main staircase; Rosewood Villa Magna shows more than 380 works, with a stained-glass wall behind its spiral stair 117118. Soho House's Barcelona Pool House spreads over 80 works across parlour, lounge, stairwell and snug 126. The pipeline is large: nearly 775 new hotels and about 52,000 rooms are projected for 2025–2028, with five-star hotels alone adding around 13,000 rooms 114. In offices, fit-out averaged EUR 1,083/m² in Madrid and EUR 1,138/m² in Barcelona in 2025, and the law firm Uría Menéndez displays all 200-plus works of its collection in its offices 8440. This suggests two orders for a hospitality or office buyer: many calm works at 100–150 cm for rooms and corridors, and a few 200 cm-plus works for the spaces guests photograph (inference); iHomeArt's minimum order is one piece, with volume pricing from ten.

Which framing and finish suit Spanish walls and the coastal climate?

Hang canvases unframed or in thin black, white, aluminium or natural-wood frames, and order them stretched unless a local framer is lined up 13318517131. El Mueble hangs its 150 × 100 cm XL canvas unframed and notes that canvases can go without a frame while prints should be framed; a 2026 Spanish framing-trend page recommends thin black, white or aluminium frames so 'the work is the protagonist'; Kave Home's 2026 guide pairs sand-finish and plaster-relief works with natural-wood frames; Westwing's 102 × 102 cm (40 × 40 in) hand-painted 'Playblack' ships on a pine stretcher with an oak-veneer frame at EUR 439 133185171160. The wall finishes of the coast point the same way: whitewash and exposed beams at a Blakstad villa in La Reserva, earth-toned render and polished concrete at a Cas Concos finca, marés stone, lime render, microcement and hydraulic tiles in the Mallorca homes The Spaces listed 213215216; a heavy gilt moulding fights those surfaces, while a textured canvas on a floating frame sits with them (inference). Casa Decor 2026 leaned on ceramic, marble and relief wall pieces, which suggests texture is the current designer preference 170. On logistics, a Calpe (Alicante) framing workshop stretches a 100 × 150 cm canvas for EUR 100–150 in 2–5 days and accepts rolled canvases, but warns that canvas rolled for long may lose flexibility 31. No published source found measures humidity, salt air or sun on Spanish walls; the inference from island villas whose terraces rival the interiors is to keep canvases out of direct afternoon sun and to prefer a stretched, finished delivery over a rolled one 106110. iHomeArt supplies rolled, stretched or framed in gold, silver, black, white or wood, shipped insured by DHL, FedEx or USPS at no charge.

Questions buyers in Spain ask

What size painting goes over the sofa in a standard Spanish flat?
Around 120–170 cm (47–67 in) wide, up to 200 cm (79 in) on a long sofa. Spanish guides size the piece at about two-thirds of the sofa width, never wider than the sofa, with the centre at 1.50–1.65 m and 10–15 cm above the sofa back 17117364133.
When should a painting go over 2 m?
When the wall is a double-height void, a 6–8 m salón wall or a hotel stair, or when it will be read from more than one level. La Zagaleta and Sotogrande listings sell on double-height halls and lounges, a void of roughly 5.5–6.5 m by inference, where a 150 cm (59 in) canvas reads as a stamp; a 200–300 cm (79–118 in) vertical, a stacked pair or a triptych fits 10221221195.
How high should the centre of a painting hang?
Kave Home's 2026 guide says 1.55–1.65 m from the floor, Arternativas about 150 cm, and Hola.com eye level. In a 3.5 m-plus Salamanca salón the eye level does not rise, so choose a taller work at the same centre rather than hanging it higher (inference) 1711736597.
Can I buy a 2 m hand-painted canvas off the shelf in Spain?
Not cut to your wall. In the chains checked in September 2026 the largest hand-painted canvas was El Corte Inglés’s 123 × 153 cm (48 × 60 in), with Home Original at 150 × 120 cm and Iglú Tiendas at 60 × 120 cm; the importer KunstLoft lists fixed formats to 200 × 150 cm but does not size to a wall, so a 2 m-plus work is made to order 162232165231.
Should a canvas be framed for a Mallorca finca or an Ibiza villa?
Either unframed or in a thin black, white, aluminium or natural-wood frame. El Mueble hangs XL canvases unframed, 2026 Spanish framing advice favours thin frames so the work is the protagonist, and the lime, render and stone walls of island houses suit a floating frame better than a heavy moulding (inference) 133185216.
Should I order a large canvas stretched or rolled?
Stretched, unless a framer is lined up. A Calpe (Alicante) workshop accepts rolled canvases but warns that canvas rolled for long periods can lose flexibility and needs more careful tensioning; it quotes EUR 100–150 for a 100 × 150 cm (39 × 59 in) reinforced stretcher in 2–5 days (2025) 31. iHomeArt ships rolled, stretched or framed, insured, at no charge.
What size suits a hotel guest room in Spain?
One horizontal of about 100–150 cm (39–59 in) above the headboard, in calm blues, greens or greys. Sir Victor Barcelona places one abstract per room and Arternativas recommends cool, contained palettes for bedrooms; lobby and stair pieces run to 2–3 m 128173117.
