Who buys art at scale in Germany, and what do they hang?
Wealth is deep at the top, concentrated in three cities and mostly held in property. UBS counts 2,648,000 US-dollar millionaires at end-2025, behind only the United States, China and Japan 206208; about 4% of adults hold close to half of private wealth, while median wealth per adult is USD 53,485, the lowest of the 30 markets UBS ranks 206207. The home-ownership rate is only about 47%, the lowest in Europe (2025) 219. Henley & Partners' 2025 city ranking (December 2024 data) puts Frankfurt at 80,300 resident millionaires, Munich at 69,800 and Berlin at 28,400, with Hamburg and Düsseldorf outside the top 50; the city figures are as tabulated by a third-party site from the Henley report, not in the press release itself 211212.
Furniture absorbs the spending; galleries take a sliver. Furniture retail turned over about EUR 33.4 billion in 2025 217, against about EUR 600 million for the roughly 700 professional galleries in 2024, more than 60% of it to private customers 175. Only 4% of Germans named collecting art a passion in a 2023 survey 54.
What hangs depends on the tier. In AD Germany's September 2026 round-up of nine living rooms in Berlin, Munich, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Rügen, seven rooms name a wall work: six hang originals or gallery editions and one a poster-shop print. It is an editorial sample of creatives' homes, not a census 221. Corporate buying is organised: 35 companies run collections in the Arbeitskreis Corporate Collecting, among them Deutsche Bank, Munich Re and Bosch 34; Deutsche Bank's Frankfurt towers devote each of 60 floors to one artist 35, with paper the dominant medium 184; Henkel hung abstract painting through the offices and corridors of its Düsseldorf headquarters 251. Hotels are a separate channel: 146 projects and 24,821 rooms were in the pipeline at Q2 2026, third in Europe by projects 126.
What does the local supply look like, and at what prices?
Four tiers: printed canvas to about EUR 60, hand-painted décor to a few hundred euros, self-represented painters from roughly EUR 1,400 for a 2 m canvas, and galleries from EUR 500 with established artists from about EUR 3,500 1641673173. Benchmarks are September 2026 unless dated; seller-by-seller detail is on the art market page.
| Seller | Size | Price |
|---|---|---|
| IKEA Germany, BLODFLÄDER framed Monet print 164 | 118 × 78 cm | EUR 59.99 |
| wandbild.com, canvas print, by bar depth 198 | 200 × 100 cm | EUR 319–389 |
| WandbilderXXL on Otto.de, 'handgemaltes Unikat' 167 | 150 × 100 cm | EUR 209–239 |
| KUNSTLOFT, 'Unzertrennlich' oil, listed price 1 | 200 × 100 cm | EUR 1,119 |
| XXL ART (Alex Zerr), signed 1/1 abstracts 3 | 100 × 200 cm | EUR 1,409–1,639 |
| Conny Wachsmann, 'Freies Spiel' 4 | 200 × 135 cm | EUR 2,142 |
| Martina Krone, commission, example price 153 | 200 × 300 cm | EUR 15,000 |
| Berlin primary market, mid-range originals (June 2026) 173 | — | EUR 500–3,500 |
The décor tier is large and fast: KUNSTLOFT lists 8,309 pictures from 21 to 200 cm at EUR 13.20 to EUR 4,980 165, Otto.de returned 3,012 results for 'ölgemälde handgemalt' 166, and WandbilderXXL states that its largest listed hand-painted piece is 240 × 110 cm with free two-day dispatch 168. Its limits are in the sellers' own terms: KUNSTLOFT's catalogue works allow 'keine Größen- oder Farbvariationen', and its commissions cap at 200 × 150 cm and take about 12 weeks 148. Independent painters quote 6–8 weeks (Brehm), 6–10 weeks for oil (Gotthardt) or about 12 weeks (Krone) 76153. A China-sourced channel already exists: Chinamaler.de quotes 6–8 weeks and e-mails a photo for approval before shipping 22; one German painter calls cheap online oils assembly-line goods 23, and 83% of consumers voiced quality concerns about Asian marketplaces in a 2024 survey about Temu-type platforms, not about art 24. The inference is that proof of process, not origin, is the lever 24.
How are the rooms laid out, and what scale do the walls need?
Ceiling height splits the residential market in two: 2.4 m in post-war and new-build rooms, 3.3 m and more in pre-war Altbau. The Musterbauordnung sets 2.40 m as the minimum for habitable rooms, pre-war urban housing frequently has 3.3 m or more, Gründerzeit flats reach 4.5 m in extreme cases, and Hamburg's 1948–1966 brick blocks mostly have 2.2 m 111. A renovated 96 m² Charlottenburg Altbau flat was listed at EUR 649,000 with ceilings of about 3.50 m (September 2026) 112. Derived from those heights, a sofa back at 0.8–0.9 m leaves 2.4–2.9 m of clear wall, so verticals of 150–200 cm (59–79 in) fill an Altbau salon where 60–100 cm prints sized for 2.4 m rooms do not; that is arithmetic, not a floor plan 112. A new dwelling averaged only 96.2 m² in 2024 123. Typologies are on the homes page, wall and viewing-distance arithmetic on the sizing page.
The villa belts are where 2 m and panoramic formats belong. Immowelt listed 20 villas in Grünwald at 240–797 m² on 759–3,697 m² plots, asking EUR 3.2–17.8 million 114, where a broker counts only 80–100 sales a year (March 2026) 115; Blankenese showed 11 villas at 143.7–635 m², EUR 1.79–4.5 million 117; a Meerbusch half-villa has ceilings reaching 7 m over a split-level living area 118; Oberkassel houses of about 360–381 m² asked EUR 4.45–4.88 million (September 2026) 246. A prefab builder's guidance sizes an open living-dining-kitchen at 50 m² or more 124, and, by inference from those living areas, villa ground floors give walls of 7–10 m viewed from 5–8 m, the scale at which a 200–300 cm (79–118 in) canvas reads correctly 114. One painter's rule of 60–75% of sofa width gives 170–210 cm over a 280 cm sofa; she reports that clients choose 'eher zu klein als zu groß' 152.
Offices and hotels buy at monumental scale in public areas and by series in rooms. Frankfurt foyers carry a 3 × 12 m tapestry and an 8 × 12 m wall mosaic 39; a 2015 report has a Stuttgart law firm rotating large-format acrylics and a Munich consultant renting paintings at EUR 25–50 a month 48. Château Royal Berlin hangs a different artist in each of its 93 rooms 133; The Wellem in Düsseldorf hangs HA Schult originals in guest rooms under four-metre Studio ceilings 140; Motel One Frankfurt commissioned a mural of over 100 m² 137; a hotel-art consultant's rules are no picture above the bed and hang lower, because guests look seated or lying down 141. Which styles, subjects and palettes fit German walls?
Warm neutrals with one accent is what sellers push; blue and green are what Germans say they like. Blue is the favourite colour at 19%, then green 14%, red 13% and beige 10%, in a paint-industry survey of 1,000 people (undated, after 2014) 66; in 2017 only one in four living rooms was painted white 67. A paint brand's 2026 trend piece names a blue its colour of the year, calls sage green a perennial best-seller and pairs pastels with terracotta and rust-red 158. Retailer trend posts converge on terracotta, sage and sand with relief textures and 'warm minimalism' 188189, but one online gallery reports that warm colours sell and blue or green are 'eher seltener favorisiert' 187, a contradiction between trend copy and one seller's sales view.
Mass-tier subjects are naturalistic: IKEA's largest formats are Monet and Van Gogh reproductions and forest photography 164, and wandbild.com's 200 × 100 cm assortment is dominated by forests, beaches, florals, deer and cattle 198. Two cautions come from culture. The 'röhrender Hirsch' is the German byword for kitsch 62, though a stylised deer returned in a 2020 'Hüttenzauber' retail guide 63. Nudes were removed from town-hall corridors in Oberhausen (2014) and Berlin-Köpenick (2016) 5556, and a corporate art consultant's office rule is 'Nicht provozieren' 48. At the top, painting carries prestige: Gerhard Richter has led the Kunstkompass every year since 2010, with Baselitz third in 2025 185, the Neue Leipziger Schule is the best-known figurative current 186, and Art Düsseldorf 2026 was announced with 119 galleries from 22 countries at Areal Böhler 231. The five cuts below follow from that; the reasoning is on the styles page.

How do buyers in Germany work with us?
By progress photos instead of a return window, which is how German commissions already run. Under § 312g BGB the 14-day withdrawal right can be excluded for goods made to the consumer's individual selection, though choosing from standard options may not trigger it 20; that matters where 24.1% of B2C parcels were returned in 2025, over 80% of them fashion 19. The domestic substitute is approval by stages: Rise Art's German service takes 50% up front, sends photo updates and states that commissions cannot be returned 21; Conny Wachsmann sends a photo 4–5 weeks after the deposit and places the picture virtually in a photo of the client's room 154; KUNSTLOFT reviewers praise altering a picture 'bis zum finalen Stand' and status e-mails during the wait 147.
iHomeArt, the trade channel of Siji Art Hub in Foshan, works the same way on a shorter cycle: 1,455 original hand-painted works, each painted to order in any size, including 2 m-plus and panoramic formats, with palette changes and variations possible, no prints and no stock. Buyers approve each stage by progress photos or video; about a week to paint plus 3–7 days transit by DHL, FedEx or USPS gives 10–13 days door to door, shipping free and insured. Every piece is signed with a certificate of authenticity; quotes come within one business day; the minimum is one piece, with volume pricing from ten; finishes are rolled, stretched or framed in gold, silver, black, white or wood.
Local finishing has published prices. A Frankfurt-area workshop stretches canvases from EUR 39 (up to 30 × 40 cm) to EUR 200 (up to 100 × 150 cm) and accepts canvases by post 31; a black shadow-gap frame there starts at EUR 249 for 100 × 150 cm 180; a workshop near Stuttgart stretches oversizes up to 4 m 32. DHL's two-man service agrees a date, phones an hour ahead and carries the item to the room of choice 28, which is the service level a stretched 2 m canvas is likely to be judged against, though no survey shows buyers apply it to art (inference) 28.
Questions buyers in Germany ask
- Where is the gap in Germany's local art supply?
- Size and speed between the décor and gallery tiers. On Otto.de the common hand-painted format is 150 × 100 cm at EUR 209–239, KUNSTLOFT's commissions cap at 200 × 150 cm and take about 12 weeks, and independent painters list 2 m canvases at EUR 1,409–2,142 and quote 6–10 weeks for commissions 1671483476.
- How large is the buyer base for art in Germany?
- Deep but concentrated. UBS counts 2,648,000 US-dollar millionaires at end-2025, about 4% of adults holding close to half of private wealth 206; Frankfurt has 80,300 resident millionaires, Munich 69,800 and Berlin 28,400 (December 2024 data) 211; the home-ownership rate is only about 47% 219.
- Do German buyers want originals or prints?
- Both, in separate tiers. Of the seven AD Germany living rooms that name a wall work, six hang originals or gallery editions and one a poster-shop print 221; an Otto.de reviewer of a KUNSTLOFT canvas wrote 'es ist kein blöder Druck' 149; KUNSTLOFT splits its range into 'Handgemalte Bilder' and 'Kunstdrucke' 197.
- What size painting does a Berlin Altbau flat or a Grünwald villa need?
- Altbau rooms run 3.3 m and more, up to 4.5 m in extreme cases, so a 150–200 cm (59–79 in) vertical over a sofa fills the wall 111112. Grünwald villas list at 240–797 m², where open ground floors take 200–300 cm (79–118 in) canvases by inference 114. A painter's rule is 60–75% of sofa width 152.
- How do German offices and hotels buy art?
- Through curators, consultants and rotation. 35 companies run collections in the Arbeitskreis Corporate Collecting 34; Deutsche Bank hangs one artist per floor 35; a Munich consultant rented paintings to firms at EUR 25–50 a month (2015) 48; Château Royal Berlin hangs a different artist in each of 93 rooms 133.
- How do I approve a made-to-order painting from Germany when there is no return right?
- By stages. German law can exclude the 14-day withdrawal right for made-to-order goods 20, so local commissions run on deposits and photo approval: Rise Art takes 50% and sends photo updates 21, Wachsmann sends a photo 4–5 weeks after the deposit 154. iHomeArt sends progress photos or video for approval at each stage before shipping.
- Which styles and palettes fit German walls?
- Warm neutrals with a blue or green accent, relief surfaces, and abstract or landscape subjects in shared spaces. Blue (19%) and green (14%) led a Deutsches Lackinstitut colour poll 66, while one online gallery owner reports warm colours selling best 187; a 2025 retailer trend post names relief-like paintings and 'warm minimalism' 188; nudes were removed from public corridors in Oberhausen and Köpenick 5556.
