What art is for sale in Germany, and what does it cost?

Germany's wall-art supply splits into three price tiers that rarely overlap. About 700 professional galleries turned over an estimated EUR 600 million in 2024, most of them small businesses selling mainly to private clients 175. A décor tier sells 'handgemalte Unikate' at EUR 209–EUR 239 for 150 × 100 cm on Otto.de and a 200 × 100 cm oil listed at EUR 1,119 (September 2026) 1671. A print tier tops out, on IKEA.de's Bilder category, at 118 × 78 cm for EUR 59.99 164. This page sets out what each tier sells, at what size and price, and where a made-to-order original fits.

What do Germany's galleries and painters sell, and what does it cost?

A large original by a living artist costs EUR 500–EUR 3,500 in Berlin's primary market and about EUR 1,400–EUR 2,200 direct from a self-representing painter at 2 m wide; the gallery trade itself is small and fragmented. The Galerienstudie 2025 puts about 700 professional galleries at roughly EUR 600 million turnover in 2024, down from EUR 890 million in the 2020 study; a typical gallery makes EUR 300,000 a year with about EUR 50,000 gross profit, 59% turn over under EUR 400,000, more than 60% of sales go to private customers, and together the galleries represent about 14,600 artists 175. The fair calendar is dense: Art Cologne 2026 (5–8 November) lists 164 galleries from 22 countries 176, Art Düsseldorf 2026 had 119 galleries, 19 of them based in Düsseldorf 231, and POSITIONS Berlin (10–13 September 2026) 96 galleries from 20 countries 177.

Kunstleben Berlin (June 2026) describes the Berlin primary market as small originals at EUR 200–EUR 500, a broad mid-range of EUR 500–EUR 3,500 and established artists from about EUR 3,500, priced by a (height + width) × artist-factor convention, with about 10% negotiable on multiple purchases 173. Below the galleries, self-representing painters publish prices online; the table shows September 2026 web prices unless dated otherwise.

On the three painter sites reviewed, the subjects offered are abstract (fluid, spatula, colour field), then landscapes, skylines, animals, flowers and portraits, an observation rather than a census 3. Lead time is this channel's weak point: one Berlin painter's guide gives 6–10 weeks minimum for oil, doubling in the October–December peak, with express surcharges of 25–50% 6; a Baden-Württemberg studio quotes 6–8 weeks, a 60 × 80 cm minimum, a 25% deposit and no express option 7; Kriese quotes 21–30 days of painting plus 10–14 business days for framing and shipping 5. Earnings explain why few painters hold large stock: the 64,568 visual artists insured with the Künstlersozialkasse on 1 January 2026 declared an average income of EUR 21,100 a year 9.

What do the home stores and décor retailers sell, and how big does it go?

German décor retail calls 120 × 80 cm 'XXL', sells prints from about EUR 20 and hand-painted 'Unikate' from about EUR 200 at 150 × 100 cm; stocked hand-painted canvases stop at 200–240 cm wide, and anything larger is a commission of roughly 12 weeks. KUNSTLOFT, an online retailer that claims more than 300,000 customers, splits its range into 'Handgemalte Bilder', 'Acryl Gemälde', 'XXL Ölgemälde' and 'Kunstdrucke', with a commission-from-photo category, a 100-day return right and a free wall-preview service 197. Its catalogue lists 8,309 pictures at 21–200 cm and EUR 13.20–EUR 4,980 (September 2026) 165. Its FAQ says catalogue works are made in small editions with no size or colour variation possible, that commissions start at about EUR 700, run up to 200 × 150 cm and take about 12 weeks from payment, and that its painters work 'in studios worldwide', countries unnamed 148. Otto.de returned 3,012 products for 'ölgemälde handgemalt' on 18 September 2026 from YS-Art, AUREDAS, KUNSTLOFT, WandbilderXXL and others, with first-page hand-painted pieces from EUR 209.90 to EUR 399 and a 'handgemalt' oil picture from EUR 39.99 166.

Two vocabulary points matter when reading German listings. 'XXL' spans roughly 120 × 80 cm on Otto.de to 200 × 100 cm at wandbild.com, and KUNSTLOFT keeps 'XXL Ölgemälde' as a category of its own, so the label says little about scale 199198197. 'Handgemalt', 'Unikat' and 'echte Ölfarben' are the sellers' own descriptions; KUNSTLOFT attaches an artist name and an 'Echtheitszertifikat' even to a EUR 239 canvas 1961. On subject, IKEA's large formats anchor on Monet and Van Gogh reproductions and neutral-toned nature photography 164, and wandbild.com's 200 × 100 cm assortment on forests, beaches, florals, deer and cattle alongside fluid-art abstraction, assortment evidence rather than sales data 198.

Who else supplies wall art: importers, online galleries and framers

Between the décor brands and the galleries sit a China-atelier import channel, international online galleries and a framing trade that stretches canvases up to 4 m; the complaints that recur in reviews are lead time, the picture not matching the web photo, transit damage and returns friction. Chinamaler.de, a German-based reseller of hand-painted oil reproductions and portraits from a partner studio in China, quotes individually within 48 hours, gives 6–8 weeks to complete a painting and emails a photo for approval with a rework promise; its copyright line runs 2007–2025 17122. Origin scepticism is documented but thin: painter Martin Mißfeldt, on an undated page read in September 2026, calls cheap online oil paintings assembly-line goods from China and puts 'real art' at roughly EUR 1,000 and up, an interested view from an artist selling his own work 23; on the review blog kunstimnetz.de one commenter, apparently from the artist side, dismisses KUNSTLOFT's range as 'Massenproduktion dekorativer Abstraktionen aus Billiglohnländern', and the latest complaints (March 2026) concern non-delivery, wrong items and slow refunds 150. In a 2024 IFH Köln survey 83% of German consumers voiced quality concerns about Asian marketplaces such as Temu and Shein, a finding about marketplaces rather than art 24.

Reviews show what buyers reward and punish. KUNSTLOFT holds a Trustpilot score of 4.7/5 from 306 reviews (18 September 2026): a 3-star review of 17 August 2026 reports a commission promised in 4–6 months arriving after about ten months; one of 10 August 2026 reports perfect delivery but a picture that did not suit the room once hung; 5-star reviewers praise being able to alter a commissioned picture 'bis zum finalen Stand', 5-day delivery, 'lebendige Farben' and status e-mails during the wait 147. WandbilderXXL scores 2.2/5 from only 10 Trustpilot reviews, among them a picture bought for almost EUR 300 that fell short of the web presentation with the return refused (2018), an acrylic-glass picture that arrived warped and wet (2021) and a EUR 75 picture never delivered (August 2026) 151.

Online galleries widen the middle band: a 2025 ranking for the German-speaking market gives Singulart EUR 500–EUR 50,000+, Artsper originals EUR 1,000–EUR 20,000 and OriginalKunstKaufen EUR 100–EUR 3,000, published by a vendor that ranks itself first 178. Rise Art's German commission service takes a 50% deposit, sends photo updates for feedback, collects the balance before dispatch and excludes returns on commissions 21. Under § 312g BGB the 14-day withdrawal right can be excluded for goods made to the consumer's individual selection, confirmed by the EuGH in 2020, though choosing from standard options may not trigger the exclusion 20.

Framing is local, priced by size and handles large formats. Art & More Rahmenwerkstatt in Raunheim near Frankfurt stretches a posted canvas onto a Keilrahmen from EUR 39 (up to 30 × 40 cm) to EUR 200 (up to 100 × 150 cm) 31, and its black Schattenfugenrahmen runs from EUR 69 to EUR 249 at the same sizes with stretching billed separately, so framing a 150 × 100 cm décor canvas costs about as much as the WandbilderXXL painting itself 180167. Rahmenkunst Unikum near Stuttgart stretches oversizes up to 4 metres on 19–40 mm bars 32, and Berliner Bilder Galerie quotes per job from photos and measurements with no published size cap 181.

What does a square metre of wall art cost in Germany?

Roughly EUR 65–EUR 195 per m² for prints, EUR 140–EUR 560 per m² for décor-tier hand-painting and EUR 700–EUR 4,000 per m² direct from German painters; at the same 2 m width the spread from décor 'Unikat' to painter is about 1.3× to 7×, an inference from five sites 1. The per-m² figures are computed from listed size and price; the sellers do not quote them.

Décor pricing is not linear: KUNSTLOFT's 200 × 100 cm category shows 'ab' prices of EUR 379–EUR 509 that appear to be the 100 × 50 cm variant, about EUR 760–EUR 1,020 per m² at small size against roughly EUR 560 per m² at 2 m, an inference from the 'Unzertrennlich' page 21. Buyer budgets sit low on this ladder: in a seller-commissioned survey reported in September 2025, 17.4% of art-interested Germans would spend up to EUR 1,000 on a work, 12.2% up to EUR 2,000, about 10% up to EUR 5,000 and about 6% more than that 52, and one online gallery's blog puts entry-level buyers who want an 'echtes Original' at about EUR 400–EUR 1,000 187.

Where do made-to-order originals fit?

Above 200 cm, and in the band between a décor 'Unikat' and a painter's commission, where German supply is thin, slow or both. Stocked hand-painting stops at 200 cm at KUNSTLOFT and 240 × 110 cm at WandbilderXXL 165168; beyond that a buyer faces a KUNSTLOFT commission of about 12 weeks capped at 200 × 150 cm 148, a painter's 6–10 weeks 67, Krone's 12 weeks at EUR 15,000 for 200 × 300 cm 153 or Chinamaler's 6–8 weeks 22.

What iHomeArt can verify. iHomeArt, the trade channel of Siji Art Hub in Foshan, paints 1,455 original canvases to order in any size: catalogue sizes to 254 cm (100 in), every work paintable larger, 106 panoramic formats, palette changes and variations possible, no prints and no stock. Each piece is signed by the artist with a certificate of authenticity and approved stage by stage from progress photos or video; about one week to paint plus 3–7 days in transit gives 10–13 days door to door. Volume pricing starts at ten pieces. There are no public prices, so a quote for a 200 × 150 cm original should be read against KUNSTLOFT's roughly EUR 560 per m² and XXL ART's EUR 705–EUR 820 per m², not against a EUR 39 print or a Kriese commission at about EUR 3,230 per m² 135.

Where the fit is practical, and where it is not. Rolled delivery suits a framing trade that stretches to 4 m and prices by size 3231. Stage-by-stage approval answers the two failure modes in the reviews, the picture not matching the web photo and not suiting the room 151147; and because the withdrawal right can be excluded for made-to-order goods, progress photos and explicit pre-order information have to stand in for the return terms German online shoppers are used to, an inference from the law and the return-culture data 2018. Approval features are expected rather than distinctive: Wachsmann offers a photo of the finished work 4–5 weeks after a 50% deposit, a money-back guarantee and a free virtual placement in the client's room photo 154, and KUNSTLOFT a free wall preview 197. The limits are three. 'Handgemalt' with a certificate already labels EUR 239 canvases 196, so only the named painter, the progress record and the size separate an original from décor. Origin scepticism appears in artist and forum comments 23150, which suggests proof of process rather than origin is the workable trust signal (inference) 24. And the collector tier is not the target: the Boros, Falckenberg and Goetz collections in Berlin, Hamburg and Munich centre on installation, the Kippenberger–Meese generation and Arte Povera rather than decorative painting 193201200, so the realistic segments are décor-tier upgrades, designed villas, offices and hospitality (inference).

Questions buyers in Germany ask

How much does an original painting cost in Germany?
In Berlin's primary market small originals run EUR 200–EUR 500, the mid-range EUR 500–EUR 3,500 and established artists from about EUR 3,500 (June 2026). Direct from painters, a 100 × 200 cm abstract lists at EUR 1,409–EUR 1,639 and a 200 × 135 cm canvas at EUR 2,142; décor-tier 'Unikate' cost EUR 209–EUR 239 at 150 × 100 cm 17334167.
Is a 'handgemaltes Unikat' from a German décor retailer an original?
It is hand-painted by the seller's description, sold with an artist name and certificate, and made in small editions with no size or colour variation possible; KUNSTLOFT says its painters work 'in studios worldwide' without naming countries. One forum commenter calls the range mass production, an Otto.de reviewer praises it as 'kein blöder Druck' 148196150149.
What is the largest painting I can buy off the shelf in Germany?
Among the retailers read in September 2026, WandbilderXXL's largest listed hand-painted piece is 240 × 110 cm with 2-day dispatch, KUNSTLOFT's catalogue caps at 200 cm and its commissions at 200 × 150 cm, and IKEA.de's largest single print is 118 × 78 cm; wandbild.com prints 200 × 100 cm for EUR 319–EUR 389 168165148164198.
How long does a commissioned painting take from a German painter or retailer?
One Berlin painter's guide gives 6–10 weeks minimum for oil, doubling in the October–December peak; a Baden-Württemberg studio quotes 6–8 weeks; KUNSTLOFT commissions take about 12 weeks; Krone's 200 × 300 cm example is 12 weeks; one KUNSTLOFT customer reported about ten months (August 2026) 67148153147.
What does it cost to stretch or frame a large canvas in Germany?
One Frankfurt-area workshop stretches a posted canvas from EUR 39 (up to 30 × 40 cm) to EUR 200 (up to 100 × 150 cm) and sells a black shadow-gap frame from EUR 69 to EUR 249 at the same sizes, stretching extra; a Stuttgart-area framer handles oversizes to 4 m, and a Berlin framer quotes per job from photos 3118032181.
Can I return a made-to-order painting in Germany?
Usually not. Under § 312g BGB the 14-day withdrawal right can be excluded for goods made to the consumer's individual selection, confirmed by the EuGH in 2020, though choosing from standard options may not trigger the exclusion; KUNSTLOFT's 100-day return right excludes commissions and Rise Art excludes returns on commissioned work 2014821.
How do German galleries arrive at a price?
By a size formula times reputation. Kunstleben Berlin (June 2026) describes the convention as (height + width) × an individual artist factor that rises with exhibitions, collection acquisitions and awards, with about 10% negotiable on multiple purchases 173. The 64,568 visual artists insured with the Künstlersozialkasse declared an average income of EUR 21,100 in 2026, which explains why few painters hold large stock 9.
