France: what buyers hang, what the walls need, and where made-to-order originals fit

France was the world's fourth-largest art market in 2025, with sales of USD 4.5 billion, up 9% after two years of decline 174. Ownership is broad: 32% of French people aged 16 and over own an original artwork, rising to 46% among cadres supérieurs (December 2025) 184. The walls are tall: a Haussmann étage noble runs 3.20 m under the ceiling, and with the double doors open the reception rooms read over 15–20 m 8687. The main gallery chain's stock grid stops at 120 × 120 cm, and among the sellers sampled anything above about 150 cm is made to order or gallery territory (September 2026) 134. This guide sets out who buys, at what price, on which walls, and where a made-to-order canvas fits.

Who buys art at scale in France, and what do they hang?

Four groups buy at scale: affluent households, a corporate tier that buys through committees or rents, a hotel pipeline being fitted out, and the auction and gallery trade that sets reference prices. French sales reached USD 4.5 billion in 2025, an 8% world share and a 9% rise, in a year when Germany fell 10% 174. Auctions turned over USD 945 million across 131,650 lots, with Paris at USD 844 million the world's third marketplace (2025) 12. The primary trade is under more strain: the CPGA's 309 member galleries declared EUR 578 million of turnover in 2024, down 6%, and 12% reported major difficulties across 2024 and the first half of 2025 175.

The household base is wide rather than concentrated. In December 2025, 32% of French people aged 16+ owned an original artwork and 30% a reproduction; ownership of an original reaches 46% among cadres supérieurs and 38% in the Paris agglomeration 184. Among buyers of originals, 50% bought directly from the artist and 38% in a gallery; Paris-area buyers use galleries most (43%) and under-25s buy online most (37%) 184.

Companies and hotels buy in programmes, not pieces. Société Générale's La Défense collection held 1,200+ works in 2019 34; Fondation Colas commissions about 15 paintings a year on a EUR 150,000 budget (2016) 35. Below that tier firms rent: one Toulouse gallery charges EUR 60–80 per month per EUR 1,000 of artwork value and offers almost exclusively paintings, with a preference for very large ones (c. 2019) 39. The hotel pipeline stood at 126 projects and 12,908 rooms at the end of 2025, fifth in Europe 99; France counts 33 palace-distinguished hotels in 2026, 13 in Paris 204; and more than a dozen Paris openings are listed for 2026, several of them office conversions with entirely new walls 100. The detail is on the offices and hospitality pages.

What does the local supply look like, and at what prices?

Three tiers with a gap between the second and third: printed and origin-undisclosed 'hand-painted' décor to about EUR 300, platform and chain originals from about EUR 150 to EUR 3,900, and galleries from EUR 1,500 upward, with almost no hand-painted work above 150 cm at a listed price among the sellers sampled 134. Benchmarks are September 2026 unless dated.

La Maison des Tableaux (Castellón, Spain), 'hand-painted' Guernica copy 140not listedEUR 164.66
Online platforms, hand-painted originals, per one French artist's guide (Aug 2025) 580 × 100 cm and upEUR 900–3,000+
Art Génération, 'très grand format' originals, 305 works 4up to about 200 × 100 cmEUR 900–8,500, most EUR 1,200–2,200
Carré d'artistes, largest standard format 134120 × 120 cmfrom about EUR 3,800–3,900
Haut-Marais emerging-artist galleries, indicative (July 2026) 136not listedEUR 1,500–15,000

At the bottom, a reproduction seller states that the hand-painted copies sold in France at EUR 250–800 are all painted in Asia, because one canvas needs at least a week of work and French labour alone would cost more than EUR 560 a week (February 2025) 24. In the middle, Carré d'artistes runs walk-in galleries in Paris, Lyon and Nice with more than 600 artists 135. Domestic commissions are slow: a Paris portrait studio quotes 5–6 weeks with a validation photo before dispatch 7, and a realist painter warns of 6–10 months for large formats 8. Seller by seller, with the fairs, on the art market page.

How are the rooms laid out, and what scale do the walls need?

French walls come in three heights: 3.20–3.80 m in the Haussmann and 19th-century stone stock, about 2.50 m in post-war and modern flats, and full-height glazing on the Riviera that leaves one or two solid walls per room 86163. In a Haussmann building the ground floor runs 3.50–3.80 m, the étage noble 3.20 m and the former service floor about 2.60 m 86; the reception rooms sit in enfilade on the street side, and with the double doors open the sightline runs 15–20 m 87. The marble fireplace centres the main wall and almost always carries a mirrored trumeau, so paintings go on the flanking walls and the wall facing the windows (inference) 87. Derived from a 3.20 m ceiling, a cornice and a sofa back, the usable art zone suits verticals of 120–180 cm (47–71 in) and horizontals of 150–200 cm (59–79 in); a 2.50 m flat caps a canvas at about 100–130 cm (39–51 in) tall (derived) 86. The end wall of the enfilade, seen from up to 20 m, is the one place a single 180–250 cm (71–98 in) vertical reads at scale (inference) 87. The average French dwelling is 92.5 m², houses 116 m² and flats 63 m² (2024) 89, so these are the walls of the upper quartiles; the arithmetic is on the homes and sizing pages.

Offices are priced per square metre and art is bought by rotation. Paris all-in fit-out averages EUR 1,500/m², rising to EUR 2,303/m² at high standard (2026) 192; Île-de-France take-up was 1.64 million m² in 2025, down 9%, with about 40% of large deals driven by headcount growth or a move to better buildings, including Décret tertiaire compliance, which is what triggers a new wall programme 193.

Hotels buy per key and per lobby. Renovation budgets reach EUR 55,000–120,000+ per key at 5-star level (2026) 201, and the same guide has no separate art line. Villa-des-Prés in Saint-Germain hangs only original large-format works, no reproductions or prints, and presents that as its selling point 108109. On the Riviera, villas of 250–700 m² 93 with panoramic glazing 163 leave a few solid inland walls, where panoramic formats of 2–3 m (79–118 in) are the proportionate choice (inference); a separate Riviera–Monaco page covers that market.

The coast is its own market. Monaco averaged EUR 57,569/m² in 2025, the world's most expensive property market, yet 78% of its 2024 resales were studios to two-bedroom flats 17795, while Knight Frank records Monaco-based buyers taking US$30–70 million villas in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and deals in Cap Ferrat, Saint-Tropez and Cannes 169. The villa sizes, the glare, the palace-hotel renovations, the Monaco galleries and a size guide by room are on the Riviera and Monaco page.

Which styles, subjects and palettes fit?

French sources describe two coexisting tastes rather than one: heritage-figurative and decorative in period apartments, and calm organic abstraction in earthy palettes for contemporary living rooms and villas (inference) 154. For classic and Haussmann interiors a French décor site prescribes 'paysages, portraits, scènes de genre ou natures mortes' in deep colours, gilded or dark-wood frames and symmetry either side of the fireplace (May 2026) 53; a Haussmann bedroom guide adds botanical prints, muted watercolours and abstraction in tertiary colours of dusty rose, blue-grey, celadon and soft ochre, avoiding pure primaries and neons (February 2026) 153. The public's reference points are figurative: the favourite artists of the French, from a closed list, are da Vinci (36%), Van Gogh (33%) and Monet (32%), and painting is the second-preferred art form (40%) after photography (December 2025) 184.

The contemporary register is nature-led and warm. French trend guides for 2026 converge on organic abstraction, stylised herbaria and misty landscapes in terracotta, sage, slate blue and golden ochre 154157; SeLoger names clay red, powder pink, brown, ochre, caramel and carmine as the tones replacing beige in 2026, while Scenolia still builds on a beige base, a contradiction between editorial and retail worth noting 156157. A décor magazine reports that many interior architects now favour a single XXL work over a wall of small frames (March 2026) 155. No French source measures a figurative-versus-abstract split in sales; what can be counted is supply, where abstract is 36% of the 121,060 paintings listed on Artsper, figurative 21%, portrait 20%, landscape 18% and still life 5%, with overlapping categories (19 September 2026) 186.

Sensitivities are few. Laïcité binds the state, not private companies: devotional imagery is kept out of public buildings by law and, by convention rather than rule, is rare in corporate interiors, while historic religious art in homes and hotels reads as heritage (inference) 60; one retailer markets nude paintings as ordinary décor for a living room, bedroom or office 62. The full mapping by room and register is on the styles page.

How do buyers in France work with us?

By progress photo, by signed quote, and with the finish stated in centimetres before anything ships, which answers the complaints French buyers post about canvases. The individual reviews on record concern finish and logistics, not the image: a painting arriving unstretched despite the listing, a work on paper instead of the expected oil on canvas, missing hanging hardware 127128129; they are listed on the art market page. Provenance is the second doubt: a reproduction seller states that the EUR 250–800 hand-painted copies sold in France are painted in Asia 24 and an expat forum links Chinese sourcing to Dafen reproductions 25, which suggests that 'hand-painted in China' needs a named artist, signature, certificate and process evidence behind it (inference); a French gallery notes that every artwork sold online must carry a certificate of authenticity 22. French interior designers bind orders with a signed quote marked 'bon pour accord' and a deposit, 30% at one studio and 60% at another 3129.

iHomeArt, the trade channel of Siji Art Hub in Foshan, is built for that gap: 1,455 original hand-painted works, each painted to order in any size, including 2 m-plus and panoramic formats, with palette changes possible, no prints and no stock. Buyers approve each stage by progress photos or video; about a week to paint plus 3–7 days transit by DHL, FedEx or USPS gives 10–13 days door to door, shipping free and insured. Every piece is signed by the artist with a certificate of authenticity; quotes come within one business day; minimum order one piece, volume pricing from ten; finishes rolled, stretched or framed in gold, silver, black, white or wood. Against the 5–6 weeks of a Paris portrait studio 7 and the 6–10 months a realist painter quotes for large formats 8, the lead time is the difference.

Local finishing is available where a large canvas travels rolled. French postal networks stop well short of a stretched 2 m canvas, so large works travel by express integrator or rolled for stretching in France; the carrier limits are on the sizing page 2627. Espace Soardi in Nice offers interior architects conservation framing with on-site measurement during construction 68; of ten Paris renovation studios in a 2026 estate-agent listing, none describes sourcing art, which leaves the choice with the client (inference) 76.

Questions buyers in France ask

How large is the art market in France, and who is buying?
France was the world's fourth-largest art market at USD 4.5 billion in 2025, up 9% 174; auctions turned over USD 945 million across 131,650 lots, with Paris the third marketplace worldwide 12. 32% of French people aged 16+ own an original artwork, and 46% of cadres supérieurs do (December 2025) 184.
Who commissions art for French offices and hotels?
Large corporates through committees (Société Générale reported about EUR 300,000 a year of acquisitions in 2014 33; Fondation Colas commissions about 15 paintings a year 35), mid-sized firms through rental agencies asking for five works and two rotations a year 42, and hotels through an art consultant, a curator or the interior designer's own commissions 10770.
What size of painting does a Haussmann salon take?
On a 3.20 m étage noble, verticals of 120–180 cm and horizontals of 150–200 cm over a sofa sit in proportion (derived) 86; the end wall of the enfilade, seen from 15–20 m, takes a single 180–250 cm vertical (inference) 87. A French sizing guide sets the main piece at 0.57 × wall width 121.
What does a large original cost locally?
Carré d'artistes' largest standard format is 120 × 120 cm from about EUR 3,800–3,900 (September 2026) 134; Art Génération's 'très grand format' works run EUR 900–8,500, mostly EUR 1,200–2,200 4; one artist's guide puts platform originals of 80 × 100 cm and up at EUR 900–3,000+ (2025) 5. Above 150 cm is made to order or gallery territory 134.
Why is 'hand-painted in China' a concern in France, and how is it answered?
Because a reproduction seller states that the EUR 250–800 hand-painted copies sold in France are painted in Asia 24, and an expat forum links Chinese sourcing to Dafen reproductions 25. The answer is what French platforms already require: a named artist, signature and certificate of authenticity 22, plus progress photos showing the canvas from blank to finished.
How long does a commissioned painting take in France compared with made to order?
A Paris portrait studio quotes 5–6 weeks with a validation photo before dispatch 7; a realist painter warns of 6–10 months for large formats 8. iHomeArt paints in about a week and ships in 3–7 days, 10–13 days door to door, with stage-by-stage photo approval before the work advances.
Can a made-to-order canvas be framed in France?
Yes. Canvases can ship rolled, and French framers such as Espace Soardi in Nice offer conservation framing with on-site measurement 68; corporate rental firms include framing and hanging 41. iHomeArt also delivers stretched or framed in gold, silver, black, white or wood, with free insured shipping.
