What do the walls of an affluent French home actually measure?
Higher than generic sizing guides assume in period stock, lower in modern flats. A Paris Haussmann building (1853–1870) has 3.50–3.80 m ceilings on the ground floor, 3.20 m on the second-floor étage noble with its continuous balcony, 2.80–3.00 m on the intermediate floors and about 2.60 m on the former service floor 86. An architect's guide updated in May 2026 gives the same gradient and describes the plan as reception rooms (salon, dining room, library) in enfilade on the street side, bedrooms and kitchen on the courtyard side, joined by a long corridor 87. Modern French towers are typically built at about 2.50 m per level, and the legal minimum for a main room is 9 m² under a 2.20 m ceiling 8688. INSEE's 2024 survey puts the average main residence at 92.5 m², houses at 116 m² and apartments at 63 m² (upper quartile 77 m²), so an affluent home sits well above the norm 89.
A derived rule, not a sourced one: on a 3.20 m étage noble, allowing for cornice, skirting and a sofa back at about 85 cm, the usable art zone on a side wall runs roughly 1.0–2.0 m above the floor, so verticals of 120–180 cm (47–71 in) and horizontals of 150–200 cm (59–79 in) over a sofa sit in proportion; in a 2.50 m flat the zone shrinks to about 1.0–1.5 m and caps a canvas at roughly 100–130 cm (39–51 in) tall 86. Haussmann cornices are often deeper than assumed, so treat the upper figures as a ceiling, not a target.
Which painting does a Haussmann salon need, and where does it go?
One large horizontal opposite the windows or behind the sofa, a matched pair flanking the fireplace, and one tall vertical closing the enfilade; the mantel itself is usually taken. The main salon has a marble fireplace centred on the principal wall, nearly always with a mirrored trumeau above it, which suggests — our inference — that paintings go on the flanking walls and the wall facing the windows rather than over the fire 87. A Houzz tour of a 225 m² Haussmann apartment in Paris 17e shows that layout: a painting behind the sofa, another in the salon corner, a ceramic on the mantel 123. With the double doors open the sightline runs 15–20 m, and nearly two-thirds of one architect's 2023–2025 projects removed those doors to make a single double réception 87. Our inference: the near wall, seen from across the room, suits 100–160 cm (39–63 in) works, while the wall that closes the enfilade is read from the far end of the suite and takes one 180–250 cm (71–98 in) vertical 87.
French sizing guides point the same way: Tabloide tells buyers to multiply wall width by 0.57, so a 3 m wall takes 1.71 m of art 121, and Maison et Vie reports that many French interior architects now prefer a single XXL work in the living room to an accumulation of small frames 155.
On style the sources split. Mur en Scène prescribes landscapes, portraits, genre scenes or still lifes in deep colours, gilded or dark patinated frames and symmetry either side of the fireplace 53; Carré d'artistes suggests a large landscape or an abstract modern canvas for the same rooms 55. The 2026 palette guides converge on terracotta, sage, slate blue and golden ochre 154; the argument over beige as the base is on the styles page.
What hangs in the salle à manger?
A still life, landscape or floral in the salon's register, because the two rooms now usually read as one. The dining room sits in the enfilade beside the salon, and nearly two-thirds of one architect's recent renovations merged the two 87. Mur en Scène names natures mortes among the subjects for classic interiors, and Art Génération lists salles à manger, salons, entrées and corridors as placements for its very-large-format canvases, which reach about 200 × 100 cm 534.
Scale is set by the table: the wall is seen seated from 2–4 m and a sideboard takes the lower metre, so our working rule is a 120–160 cm (47–63 in) horizontal above the sideboard or a 100 × 150 cm (39 × 59 in) vertical on the end wall. In a Lyon appartement bourgeois with a separate dining room and a 30 m² séjour, walls of roughly 5–6 m allow one such work or a two-panel set (derived) 90. Where the dining room has joined the double réception, the piece should share the salon's palette so the long view reads as one sequence 87.
How big should bedroom art be under a 3.20 m ceiling?
A horizontal of at least 120 × 80 cm facing the bed, a work about two-thirds of the bed's width above the headboard, and 60 × 80 cm verticals beside the windows. That is a French retailer's February 2026 guidance for Haussmann bedrooms with 3.20 m ceilings, which puts the above-bed piece at 100–110 cm wide for a 160 cm bed 153. The same guide favours botanical prints, muted watercolours and contemporary abstraction in tertiary colours (dusty rose, blue-grey, celadon, soft ochre), and warns against pure primaries, neons and ornate frames 153.
The competitor on the headboard wall is wallpaper. A Madame Décore feature on an avenue de Courcelles apartment lists eight décor ideas, including a panoramic wallpaper headboard, and no painting 124; a Parc Monceau apartment featured in May 2026 is built around an 1861 panoramic wallpaper 159. A painted panoramic canvas of 50 × 150 cm (20 × 59 in) to 76 × 229 cm (30 × 90 in) does the same job and leaves with the owner — our inference, using the panoramic formats Tabloide suggests for large walls 121. Bedrooms sit on the quieter courtyard side of the plan, so calm, low-contrast work suits them better than the salon's deep colours 87.
Entrance, corridor and stair void: where does the tall vertical go?
At the end of the corridor and in any stair void — the only domestic positions seen from far enough away to justify a 200–250 cm (79–98 in) canvas. The Haussmann plan runs a long corridor between the street-side reception rooms and the courtyard-side bedrooms 87. Art Génération, whose very-large-format collection held 305 originals in September 2026 (common sizes 120 × 120 and 146 × 114 cm, €900–8,500, most at €1,200–2,200), recommends them for a loft, a double-height entrance or a reception room and names entrées and couloirs among the placements 4.
Our working rule: a corridor is passed at 1–2 m and its side walls are seen obliquely, so they take a row of 60–90 cm (24–35 in) verticals or one 90 × 135 cm (35 × 53 in) piece, while the wall that closes the corridor is seen frontally down its whole length and takes a single 150–200 cm (59–79 in) vertical. Mur en Scène's portraits and genre scenes make that terminus a natural place for a figurative work 53.
Home office and the 2.50 m flat: what changes?
The ceiling, and with it the format: a modern French flat caps a canvas at roughly 100–130 cm (39–51 in) tall, so the statement piece goes wide or square. Post-war and contemporary towers are typically built at about 2.50 m per level, and the average French apartment is 63 m² 8689. Tabloide suggests 100 × 100 cm or panoramic 40 × 120 / 50 × 150 cm for a large blank wall and reserves vertical formats for rooms with generous ceiling height 121; a 2026 trend guide advises one dominant piece rather than several competing ones 154.
A home office in a Haussmann flat is typically a courtyard-side former bedroom, which suggests the bedroom rules apply: 60 × 80 cm verticals or a 120 × 80 cm horizontal in tertiary colours 153. No French source found sizes home-office art separately.

Lyon, Bordeaux and the Riviera: how do the houses differ from Paris?
Lyon and Bordeaux repeat the Paris pattern at lower prices; the Riviera villa replaces walls with glass, so its few solid walls take panoramic or paired work. A 123 m² appartement bourgeois in a 1900 building in Lyon 6e, with herringbone parquet, fireplaces, a 30 m² séjour and a separate dining room, was listed at €650,000 in September 2026 90. In Bordeaux's Chartrons, a 120 m² stone-built flat with a carved fireplace and 'belle hauteur sous plafond' was listed at €460,000, while single-storey échoppes of about 85 m² offer one front salon and no stair 9192.
On the Côte d'Azur, one agency's Cap d'Antibes catalogue runs from 250 m² villas on 1,100 m² plots to a 700 m² estate on 5,000 m², and the top tier reaches 555–1,132 m² houses at €28–42 million 9394. A Riviera architecture firm describes a villa overlooking Monaco with large panoramic bay windows under raw-concrete overhangs 163; our inference from such glazing is that one or two inland walls become the only hanging surfaces, so panoramic formats of 2–3 m (79–118 in) or matched pairs are proportionate and matte, textured finishes cope better with glare 93. A separate Riviera–Monaco page covers that market in detail.
Where do you buy a 180 cm canvas in France, and what goes wrong?
Above about 150 cm the French market is gallery territory or made-to-order; the retail grid stops at 120 × 120 cm. French owners of originals mostly bought direct from the artist (50%) or in a gallery (38%), with Paris-agglomeration buyers the most gallery-oriented (43%), per an Ipsos bva survey of December 2025 184. Carré d'artistes, with galleries in Paris, Lyon and Nice, prices unique certified paintings by format up to 120 × 120 cm, at about €3,800–3,900 in September 2026, with larger out-of-format works unpriced 1341351. Art Génération's very-large-format collection reaches about 200 × 100 cm at €900–8,500 4. At the other end, IKEA France's largest wall item is a printed nine-piece set of 179 × 112 cm at €69.99 138, and one online seller offers hand-painted oils made to the centimetre from €49.90 without saying where its workshop is 139. Our inference from that ladder: sizes above 150 cm are essentially made-to-order or gallery purchases 134.
What goes wrong when a household buys online is a matter of finish rather than image: works arriving unstretched or on paper instead of canvas, missing hanging hardware, and product photos that hide real size 127128131; the reviews are on the art market page. A certificate of authenticity from the artist or their representative is expected with any online purchase 22.
That is the gap a made-to-order studio fills. iHomeArt paints every work to order in any size (the catalogue lists sizes up to 254 cm, 100 in, and every work can be painted larger), with the finish fixed at order, progress photos approved stage by stage and a signed certificate; about one week to paint plus 3–7 days in transit. The full terms are on the country page.

Questions buyers in France ask
- What competes with a painting on a Haussmann bedroom wall?
- Wallpaper. A Madame Décore feature on an avenue de Courcelles apartment lists eight bedroom ideas, including a panoramic wallpaper headboard, and no painting 124; a Parc Monceau apartment featured in May 2026 is built around an 1861 panoramic paper 159. A painted panoramic of 50 × 150 cm (20 × 59 in) or larger fills the same wall and moves with the owner (inference) 121.
- Can I hang a painting over the marble fireplace?
- Usually the trumeau mirror already occupies that position in a Haussmann salon 87. Where the mantel is free, one French guide's rule is 10–20 cm above the shelf, a work no wider than 75% of the mantel (120 cm over 160 cm) and two-point fixing with steel cable above 100 cm 54.
- Figurative or abstract for a period Paris apartment?
- The sources disagree. Mur en Scène prescribes landscapes, portraits, genre scenes and still lifes with gilded or dark frames 53; Carré d'artistes suggests a large landscape or an abstract canvas for classical interiors 55; a bedroom guide accepts contemporary abstraction in tertiary colours 153. Both tastes coexist rather than one national preference 154.
- What size of art suits a bedroom with 3.20 m ceilings?
- A French retailer's February 2026 guide recommends 60 × 80 cm verticals beside the windows, a horizontal of at least 120 × 80 cm on the wall facing the bed, and an above-bed work about two-thirds of the bed's width, which is 100–110 cm for a 160 cm bed 153.
- How do Lyon and Bordeaux flats differ from a Paris Haussmann for hanging art?
- In plan, little; in price, a lot. A 123 m² appartement bourgeois of 1900 in Lyon 6e with fireplaces and a 30 m² séjour was listed at €650,000 in September 2026 90; a 120 m² Chartrons stone flat in Bordeaux with a carved fireplace and tall ceilings at €460,000 91. Bordeaux échoppes of about 85 m² offer one front salon and no stair, so no tall-vertical position 92.
