Size guide: what size of painting French walls need

French walls come in two heights. Period stock — a Haussmann étage noble at 3.20 m, a ground floor at 3.50–3.80 m — takes paintings the French retail grid does not stock, while modern flats at about 2.50 m cap the vertical dimension 86134. This guide turns the dimension evidence into numbers: a width rule, hanging heights, and a size range in centimetres and inches for each space type, from the wall behind a Paris sofa to the one solid wall of a Riviera villa and a 16 m² hotel room 12193203. The figures come from French retailer and architect guides; where we have done the arithmetic it is marked as derived.

How wide should a painting be for a French wall, and how high does it hang?

About 57% of the wall's width, with its centre at 152–165 cm from the floor. Tabloide's French sizing guide (January 2022) multiplies wall width by 0.57 — a 3 m wall takes 1.71 m of art — hangs the centre at 152–165 cm (60–65 in), leaves 15–25 cm above a sofa or console, and suggests 100 × 100 cm or panoramic 40 × 120 / 50 × 150 cm for large blank walls 121. Carré d'artistes puts eye level at 160–180 cm (63–71 in), reserves grand formats for rooms with 3 m+ ceilings and warns against an oversized work that crushes a small room 55. The two guides differ by about 10 cm on height, which suggests the centre line should follow whether the room is used seated or standing (our inference).

Above a fireplace the rules are tighter: 10–20 cm above the mantel, a painting no wider than 75% of it — 120 cm (47 in) over a 160 cm mantel — a vertical composition rather than a high hang in 3.50 m rooms, and two-point fixing above 100 cm 54. In a Haussmann salon the chimney wall is usually taken by the marble fireplace and its trumeau mirror 87, and Mur en Scène (May 2026) says symmetry is often the rule, with matching pieces either side of the fireplace 53 — so the paintings go on the flanking walls and opposite the windows (our reading of the two sources).

Which size for which room? The table

Sizes are the long side unless two dimensions are given; inches are rounded. Rows marked derived combine a sourced ceiling height or sightline with the 0.57 rule and standard furniture heights, and should be checked against the actual wall.

When should you go over 2 m?

When the viewer stands more than a room's width away, when the ceiling passes 3 m, or when the wall is the only solid one in the room. Three French conditions produce that: the Haussmann enfilade seen end-on from 15–20 m 87; the 3.20–3.80 m ceilings of the étage noble and ground floor 86; and the Riviera villa of 250–700 m² whose sea side is glass 93163. Art Génération, a gallery with spaces in Paris and Lyon, recommends its 'très grand format' works — 305 pieces up to 200 × 100 cm, priced €900–8,500 with most at €1,200–2,200 in September 2026 — for 'un loft, une entrée à double hauteur ou une pièce de réception' 4. Maison et Vie (March 2026) reports that many interior architects now favour a single large-format work over an accumulation of small frames 155, and Walensky's 2026 trend guide advises one dominant piece rather than five strong paintings fighting each other 154.

The supply stops short of those sizes. Carré d'artistes' standard grid tops out at 120 × 120 cm, about €3,800–3,900 in September 2026 134; IKEA France's largest wall art is a nine-piece printed set of 179 × 112 cm at €69.99 138; Scenolia's printed 'tableaux XXL' stop at 200 × 140 cm at €29–139 120; Art Génération reaches 200 × 100 cm 4. Above roughly 150 cm a painting in France is therefore either a gallery piece or made to order — our reading of the listings. iHomeArt's catalogue lists sizes up to 254 cm (100 in), holds 106 panoramic works, and every work can be painted larger; the cuts below show what is available at 200 cm and 250 cm. The small-room warning still applies 55: the average French apartment is 63 m² 89, and a 2 m work needs about 3.5 m of clear wall under the 0.57 rule 121.

Which frame and finish suit French rooms and the Riviera light?

Match the frame to the room's register and the surface to its light. Mur en Scène (May 2026) pairs classic and Haussmann interiors with ornate gilded frames or dark patinated wood 53; Walensky's Haussmann bedroom guide wants discreet natural wood, thin black metal or sober gold 153; its 2026 trend guide moves to raw-wood or brushed-metal frames 154, and Maison et Vie describes gallery walls in mixed wood and metal frames 155. Read together, the guides point to gold or dark wood for the salon of an étage noble and natural wood, thin black or an unframed stretched canvas for a contemporary flat or villa (our synthesis). iHomeArt's finishes are rolled, stretched, or framed in gold, silver, black, white or wood.

Light is the climate question. Carré d'artistes warns against hanging opposite a window because of glare 55; a Vielliard & Francheteau villa above Monaco is built with 'grandes baies vitrées panoramiques' under raw-concrete overhangs 163; and Espace Soardi in Nice offers Côte d'Azur interior architects conservation framing with glass and acid-free materials, measured on site during construction 68. On the inland wall of such a room a matte or textured surface without glazing avoids reflection — our inference from the glazing, not a measured finding; the plaster-textured works in beige, cream and white are cut below. Heat is the other question: for an open fire Walensky advises a hand test on the wall after two hours, raising the work 5–10 cm, and steel-cable two-point fixing above 100 cm 54.

Stretched or rolled is a size question. Colissimo takes parcels up to 30 kg and 200 cm of length + width + height, Chronopost a maximum length of 150 cm 26; FedEx Express in France accepts up to 274 cm 27. A stretched 180 cm canvas therefore travels by express integrator or freight, which is why large works commonly ship rolled for local stretching (our inference from the limits); an Artsper buyer's Trustpilot review (2025–26) of a painting that arrived unstretched despite the listing shows the friction when the finish is not stated 127. iHomeArt fixes the finish at order and ships free and insured by DHL, FedEx or USPS, about 3–7 days in transit after roughly a week of painting.

Questions buyers in France ask

How high should a painting hang in a French living room?
Tabloide's guide puts the centre at 152–165 cm from the floor and leaves 15–25 cm above a sofa or console 121; Carré d'artistes puts eye level at 160–180 cm 55. Above a mantel, Walensky advises 10–20 cm of clearance and a width no more than 75% of the mantel 54.
What size goes above the sofa in a Haussmann salon?
The 0.57 rule gives 171–200 cm of art on a 3–3.5 m wall 121, and under a 3.20 m ceiling a vertical of 120–180 cm sits in proportion (derived) 86. The chimney wall usually carries the trumeau mirror, so the sofa wall and the wall opposite the windows take the large piece 87.
What size suits a corridor or a stair void?
A corridor is passed at 1–2 m and seen obliquely, so its side walls take 60–90 cm (24–35 in) verticals; the wall that closes it is seen down its whole length and takes one 150–200 cm (59–79 in) vertical (derived). A double-height entrance or stair void is the domestic position for 200–250 cm (79–98 in), which is where Art Génération places its very large canvases 4.
Can a 2 m painting work in a modern 2.50 m flat?
Only on a wall with about 3.5 m clear, following the 0.57 rule 121. Under a 2.50 m ceiling the usable zone is roughly 1.0–1.5 m, capping verticals at about 130 cm (derived) 86; Carré d'artistes warns against a work that crushes a small room 55. A panoramic 50 × 150 cm is the alternative 121.
Why do French shops stop at 120 cm?
Carré d'artistes' standard grid ends at 120 × 120 cm, about €3,800–3,900 in September 2026 134; IKEA France's largest wall art is a printed 179 × 112 cm nine-piece set at €69.99 138; Scenolia's prints stop at 200 × 140 cm 120; Art Génération's originals reach 200 × 100 cm 4. Larger sizes are gallery or made-to-order territory.
Does a Riviera villa need a different finish?
Riviera villas are built with panoramic bay windows 163, and Carré d'artistes warns against hanging opposite a window because of glare 55; Espace Soardi in Nice sells conservation framing to Côte d'Azur architects 68. A matte or textured surface without glazing on the inland wall is our inference from that light, not a measured finding.
Can iHomeArt paint larger than the sizes listed?
Yes. The catalogue lists sizes up to 254 cm and every work can be painted larger, in panoramic, vertical, diptych or triptych formats, with palette changes possible. Painting takes about a week, with progress photos or video and stage-by-stage approval; each piece is signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
