What subjects do French buyers actually hang?
Landscape, the human figure, still life and botanical motifs — paysage, portrait and nature morte — recur across period apartments, galleries and hotels, and abstraction sits beside them rather than replacing them. The public ranks painting second among preferred visual arts (40%, after photography at 45%), and its favourite artists from a closed list are Leonardo da Vinci (36%), Van Gogh (33%), Monet (32%), Picasso (23%) and Dalí (18%) — a list weighted to figurative and Impressionist painting (December 2025) 184. A decoration guide for classic and Haussmann interiors prescribes ‘paysages, portraits, scènes de genre ou natures mortes’ in deep colours, hung symmetrically either side of the fireplace (May 2026) 53. A retailer's guide for Haussmann bedrooms recommends 19th-century botanical prints, black-and-white architectural photography, muted watercolours and single-line drawings (February 2026) 153. In Time Out's 2025 list of Paris hotels with collections, the works cited are 19th-century paintings, Art Deco frescoes and Klimt lithographs — one editorial list, not a statistic 109.
Nature motifs dominate the 2026 trend coverage: three décor sources converge on ‘volutes végétales, herbiers minutieux et scènes de sous-bois’, stylised herbaria, misty landscapes and panoramic landscape wallpapers (December 2025 to May 2026) 157154155. A print retailer's housewarming guide names Mediterranean landscapes, olive trees, flowers and countryside as the broadly acceptable gift subjects (June 2026) 57. Regional townscapes are part of the gallery offer: Lyon and Saint-Martin views sit in Carré d'artistes' EUR 250–1,000 band at 36×36 cm for EUR 499 (September 2026) 2. Animal imagery appears as corporate identity: the coworking operator Wojo commissions an original ‘protective animal’ — butterfly, deer, lion — for its sites (2024) 59. Heritage pattern lives in textiles: Provençal fabrics carry olive and lavender motifs in madder red and indigo, and toile de Jouy uses single-colour pastoral scenes 58. In period Paris flats the large wall statement is often a panoramic wallpaper — an 1861 scene anchors a Parc Monceau apartment featured in May 2026 — which suggests a painted panoramic landscape competes with paper, not with other paintings, in these rooms 159124.
Does France prefer figurative or abstract painting?
Both, by setting: no French source quantifies a national preference, and the survey data ties the two camps. Asked which era interests them most, 25% of French people choose art since 1960, 23% the 1500–1900 canon, 16% modern art of 1900–1960, and 32% say they do not know enough to answer (December 2025) 184. 64% say they appreciate contemporary art, but only 38% feel they understand it 184. A claim that abstract painting was 35% of French contemporary-art sales in 2024 circulates on retailer and artist blogs but traces to no primary source, so it should be read as unverified 51190. The hard number is supply, not sales: on Artsper's French site on 19 September 2026, abstract painting made up 36% of 121,060 listed paintings, figurative 21%, portrait 20%, landscape 18% and still life 5%, with categories overlapping 186. Globally, Knight Frank's 2025 luxury index has Impressionist art up 13.6% and contemporary art down 6.0% over twelve months 169.
The sources therefore describe two coexisting tastes — heritage-figurative and decorative in period Paris apartments, calm organic abstraction or a single large canvas in earthy tones in contemporary living rooms — an inference rather than a measured split 154. Maison et Vie reports that many interior architects now favour one XXL work over an accumulation of small frames in the living room (March 2026) 155. The classic-interior advice is not exclusive either: Carré d'artistes suggests a large landscape or abstract modern art for classical interiors 55. The working rule is that the room's register, not nationality, sets the choice: Impressionist landscape, florals and still life for the Haussmann salon, one organic abstract for the renovated double réception.
Which colours are French interiors asking for in 2026?
Earth and forest: terracotta, ochre, caramel and brown, with sage, olive and slate blue as the secondary register and beige contested as the base. Walensky's 2026 guide names the painting palette as terracotta, sage green, slate blue and golden ochre, drawn ‘from earth, forest and stone’ (May 2026) 154. Maison et Vie's living-room palette is terracotta, sage and sand beige (March 2026) 155. Scenolia's 2026 report proposes a 60/30/10 scheme on a beige base with coral, cherry and butter-yellow accents, and Pantone's Mocha Mousse with brushed brass (December 2025) 157. SeLoger's décor desk contradicts the beige base, naming seven warm tones replacing it in 2026 — clay red, powder pink, brown, burnt sienna, ochre, caramel and carmine red — and calling carmine ‘one of the star colours of 2026’ (August 2026) 156. Stock tells the same story: Scenolia's trend range is tagged Beige (23 items), Green (19), Black/White (18) and Blue (8) (read September 2026) 158.
Period rooms take a quieter version. The Haussmann bedroom guide recommends contemporary abstraction in tertiary colours — dusty rose, blue-grey, celadon, soft ochre — and warns against pure primaries and neons 153, while the classic-salon guide prefers deep colours in gilded frames 53. At the top of the hotel market, Cheval Blanc Paris describes its interiors as ‘a kaleidoscope of golds and colours’ 160. In catalogue terms: Terracotta, Gold, Brown and Beige carry the 2026 earth register; Green, Teal and Blue the secondary; Red, Pink, Orange and Yellow where a warm accent is wanted; Pink, Gray, Green and Gold in their dusty forms for period bedrooms.
Texture, frames and finish: what reads as an original in France?
Matte, textured surfaces and restrained frames — natural wood, thin black metal, sober gold — with ornate gilding reserved for classic salons. The 2026 trend sources ask for natural-wood or brushed-metal frames 154, mixed wood and metal frames when several works hang together, and wall relief — wood panels, relief sculptures, ceramics 155. The Haussmann bedroom guide specifies discreet frames in natural wood, thin black metal or sober gold 153; the classic-salon guide prescribes ornate gilded frames or dark patinated wood 53. Panoramic wallpaper up to 600 cm wide and printed panels up to 200×140 cm at EUR 29–139 are the mass-market surfaces a hand-painted canvas is judged against (December 2025, September 2026) 157120.
Finish also carries the provenance question. What French reviewers object to is the support and the surface, not the image: a work arriving unstretched, a work on paper where oil on canvas was expected, photos without scale references 127128131. The ‘painted in Asia’ association that sits under the EUR 250–800 reproduction trade is set out on the art market page 24; what lifts a work clear of it is a named artist, a signature and a certificate, as Singulart supplies with each work 23. That is where a made-to-order painter has to be explicit: iHomeArt signs each piece, issues a certificate of authenticity, sends progress photos or video with stage-by-stage approval, and delivers rolled, stretched or framed (gold, silver, black, white, wood) so the frame follows the room's register; its Textured & Plaster range (295 works) answers the relief and matte requirement.
What do French buyers avoid?
The documented red lines are aesthetic rather than moral: pure primaries and neons in period rooms, oversized works in small rooms, glare, and several strong paintings competing on one wall. The Haussmann bedroom guide says to avoid pure primary colours, neons and ornate gold frames 153. Carré d'artistes warns against oversized works in small rooms and against hanging opposite windows because of glare 55. Walensky advises one dominant piece rather than five strong paintings fighting each other (May 2026) 154. In classic salons symmetry is ‘souvent de mise’ and the chimney wall most often carries a mirrored trumeau, so a single asymmetric statement over the mantel goes against the room's code 5387.
Subject taboos are thin in the sources. On religious imagery: laïcité rests on the 1905 separation law and the 2004 law on religious signs in schools, and binds the state rather than private companies, which since 2016 may write a neutrality clause into their règlement intérieur 60; from that we infer — the sources do not say it — that devotional imagery is kept out of public buildings and is rare in corporate interiors by convention, while historic religious art in homes and hotels reads as heritage. On nudes: a French retailer markets nude paintings for living rooms, bedrooms and offices, one vendor's positioning; no source measures attitudes to nude art in interiors 62. Animal subjects appear in corporate commissions and no source documents a taboo on them, though absence of a documented taboo is not evidence of acceptance 59. What buyers demonstrably object to is being misled about size and support 127128131; the practical avoidances for a supplier are unstated dimensions, an unstated finish and unproofed colour.

How do taste and buying differ by generation and city?
Older, wealthier Parisians own and buy originals through galleries; the young buy online, prefer street art and pop, and name Kahlo and Basquiat where their elders name Soulages and Matisse. Ownership of an original artwork is 32% nationally, rising to 46% among cadres supérieurs, 43% among the over-70s and 38% in the Paris agglomeration, against 22% among 35–44-year-olds (December 2025) 184. Paris-agglomeration buyers stand out for gallery purchases (43%) and under-25s for online purchases (37%) 184. Soulages and Matisse are cited more by the over-60s, Kahlo and Basquiat by the young and by women, and 75% of under-25s appreciate contemporary art 184185. On Catawiki France in 2024, street art and pop art were the most in-demand segment and the top result was a JonOne street-art canvas at EUR 12,000 63; worldwide, 46% of Christie's new bidders in 2025 were millennials or Gen Z 149.
By city the evidence is uneven. Paris concentrates the blue-chip galleries in the Marais, with emerging-artist galleries at roughly EUR 1,500–15,000 per work by a hotel blog's indicative bands (July 2026) 136, and its taste splits between the Haussmann heritage code and the earth-toned contemporary register above 53154. Lyon's documented offer is local and figurative: Lyon townscapes are on Carré d'artistes' shelves, the chain runs a gallery at 57 passage de l'Argue, and the Villa Florentine reopens in April 2026 with an art programme curated by Joséphine Fossey 2135101103. On the Riviera, a Nice framer-gallery says large-format photography and works on paper are ‘particularly frequent’ in Côte d'Azur residential and hospitality projects — one vendor's view 68 — while Le Negresco's collection of more than 6,000 works anchors Nice's heritage tier 105; a separate Riviera–Monaco page covers that coast. For Bordeaux the sources describe tall-ceilinged stone apartments in the Chartrons and the art3f direct-from-artist salon (4–6 December 2026), but no Bordeaux-specific taste evidence was found, so the Paris heritage code is the safer working assumption (inference) 91145.
Questions buyers in France ask
- Do French buyers prefer figurative or abstract painting?
- Neither dominates. In December 2025, 25% of French people said art since 1960 interests them most and 23% chose the 1500–1900 canon; 64% appreciate contemporary art but only 38% understand it 184. The 35% abstract-sales figure on retailer blogs has no primary source 190. Period rooms lean figurative, renovated rooms abstract, by inference 154.
- Which colours are in demand in French interiors in 2026?
- Terracotta, sage green, slate blue and golden ochre lead the 2026 painting palette 154, with beige as the contested base 157. SeLoger's August 2026 column names clay red, powder pink, brown, ochre, caramel and carmine as the tones replacing beige 156. Period bedrooms take dusty rose, blue-grey, celadon and soft ochre 153.
- Is religious or nude imagery a problem in France?
- The sources document no taboo. Laïcité (the 1905 law) binds public bodies, not private firms; that devotional imagery is rare in corporate interiors is our inference from convention, not a finding 60. A French retailer sells nude paintings for living rooms, bedrooms and offices 62; no source measures attitudes to nudes on walls, so treat the subject as ordinary but client-specific.
- Which frames suit a Haussmann apartment?
- It depends on the room's register. A classic-salon guide prescribes ornate gilded or dark patinated wood frames and symmetry either side of the fireplace 53. A Haussmann bedroom guide asks for discreet natural wood, thin black metal or sober gold and warns against ornate gold 153. Trend sources add natural wood and brushed metal 154.
- What subjects sell in Lyon, Nice and Bordeaux?
- Lyon townscapes are on Carré d'artistes' shelves at EUR 499 for 36×36 cm (September 2026) 2. In Nice a framer-gallery reports large-format photography and works on paper as frequent choices in villa projects 68. For Bordeaux no taste-specific evidence was found; its stone apartments suggest the Paris heritage code applies (inference) 91.
- How do younger French buyers differ from older ones?
- Under-25s buy online (37%) and cite Kahlo and Basquiat; over-60s cite Soulages and Matisse, and 43% of over-70s own an original against 22% of 35–44-year-olds (December 2025) 184. On Catawiki France in 2024, street art and pop art led demand and the top sale was a JonOne canvas at EUR 12,000 63.
