Art for hotels and restaurants in France

France had 126 hotel projects and 12,908 rooms in development at the end of Q4 2025, fifth in Europe behind the UK, Germany, Turkey and Portugal 99, after a Q3 2025 count of 114 projects and 11,097 rooms that was already 9% up on the year in project terms 98. Paris lists 13 intra-muros openings for 2026, several in former offices or banks with entirely new walls 100, and the country counts 33 Palace-distinguished hotels, 13 of them in Paris 204. The sources split the art side of this market in two: palaces publicise historic collections, while boutique and upper-midscale openings buy through art consultants or single suppliers whose offer mixes prints, wallpaper and commissions; the originals-only programme of Villa-des-Prés is the exception in what was found 109. This page covers the pipeline and who decides, the scale each space needs, what restaurants hang, what an FF&E buyer asks of a supplier, the catalogue cuts that fit, and an illustrative schedule for a 36-room boutique hotel.

How big is France's hotel pipeline, and who decides what hangs?

About 12,900 rooms are in development, and on the projects that publish an art programme the decision sits with an art consultant, a curator or the interior designer's own commissions, not with a procurement list 9910770. Lodging Econometrics counted 126 projects and 12,908 rooms in France at the end of Q4 2025, behind the UK, Germany, Turkey and Portugal 99; its Q3 2025 report put France at 114 projects and 11,097 rooms, up 9% in project count year on year, and forecast 338 hotel openings across Europe in 2026 98. The 96-room Hôtel Boulevard de la Bastille is an office-to-hotel conversion and the 90-room Radisson Collection Banke Opéra occupies a 1907 bank 100.

The 2026 openings name their designers 100. In Paris: Hôtel California (188 rooms, Jean-Philippe Nuel), Bus Palladium (35 suites, Studio KO) and L'Île Seguin in Boulogne-Billancourt (230 rooms, Maison Sarah Lavoine) 100, the last planned with an art centre and a sculpture trail 101. L'Aventure (24 rooms) pairs Martin Brudnizki's interiors with decorator Vincent Darré as artistic director, and the Louis Vuitton hotel on the Champs-Élysées is scheduled for 2026 with spaces dedicated to art 101, 10 suites and a 1,500 m² spa 102. In the regions, La Villa Florentine in Lyon reopens in April 2026 with art curated by Joséphine Fossey and Zannier Île de Bendor (93 rooms) opens with an art gallery 103; the Maybourne Riviera (69 rooms, André Fu) reopens in spring 2026 105; Le Saint-James above Bordeaux reopens at the end of 2026 117. Atout France's June 2026 reassessment added Bvlgari, Cheval Blanc and Fouquet's in Paris and the Martinez in Cannes to the Palace list 204.

Who chooses 107? The two Paris consultants named as reference practitioners, Joséphine Fossey (JFO; Lutetia) and Alex Toledano (VISTO; 25hours Terminus Nord), argue that the art programme should be set at project inception with its own budget, from mood boards and zoning plans, favouring local artists; neither publishes budgets or work counts 107. Muzéo, a French art-supply company, provided custom murals of Nice heritage for the Negresco spa renovation led by Jean-Philippe Nuel and produces printed and framed works, custom wallpapers and original commissions in its own workshops for hotels, the incumbent single-supplier model 48. At the top, the designer commissions directly: Laura Gonzalez commissions custom artwork per project 70, Rodolphe Parente cites the 37-room Hôtel Le Provençal and the 400 m² Yeeels restaurant 72, and Festen Architecture (Le Pigalle, Les Roches Rouges) publishes no art-sourcing policy 76. This suggests a painted original enters a French hotel through the consultant's zoning plan or the designer's brief, and competes on the wall with prints, wallpaper and photography rather than with other paintings 10948.

What scale do the lobby, guest rooms, corridors, restaurant and spa need?

The French hotels that document their art hang one large piece per public wall and one piece per guest room, varied so that no two rooms match 105206210. The palace tier is a separate market: Le Negresco in Nice (124 rooms, each decorated differently) holds more than 6,000 works including Picasso, Klee and Niki de Saint Phalle 105, and its 400 m² Jeanne et Paul suite by Jean-Philippe Nuel, at EUR 25,000–35,000 a night in August 2025, hangs Rubens 106. Cheval Blanc Paris (72 rooms and suites) was furnished by Peter Marino with Georges Mathieu, Vik Muniz and Sonia Delaunay 110 plus commissioned Art Deco panels by Ingrid Donat 160. A made-to-order decorative canvas does not compete at that level (inference).

Lobby and reception 108. Villa-des-Prés (34 rooms, Bruno Borrione) presents originals in common areas and rooms 'in the manner of a private collection', and its curator Amélie du Chalard uses only large-format originals, with no reproductions, engravings or lithographs 108109. Hôtel Dame des Arts combines original artworks and custom furniture in every room 210; 25hours Terminus Nord builds on street-art murals of local figures, a programme by VISTO 112. Time Out otherwise cites 19th-century paintings at Maison Proust, Art Deco frescoes in the Lutetia's Bar Joséphine and Klimt lithographs at the 138-room Hôtel des Grands Voyageurs, which suggests Paris lobbies reach for figurative and Art Deco registers more often than large contemporary abstraction 109. Haussmann ground floors carry 3.50–3.80 m ceilings against 3.20 m on the étage noble 86, so a lobby there takes a 200–300 cm (79–118 in) work in proportion (inference).

Guest rooms and suites 203. The Atout France classification sets a 4-star double at 16 m² excluding bathroom, a junior suite at 28 m² and a suite at 40 m² with separate living and sleeping areas 203. Drawing House in Montparnasse (143 rooms) gives each room a fresco or small framed works by contemporary French artists, and the 48-room Drawing Hotel gave six artists free rein in its corridors 206, which suggests a working model of one wall piece per room plus a corridor series. A French guide for 3.20 m Haussmann bedrooms sizes above-bed art at about two-thirds of the bed width (100–110 cm for a 160 cm bed) and asks for a minimum 120 × 80 cm horizontal on the facing wall 153; applied to a 16 m² double that means one 100–140 cm (39–55 in) headboard piece, and in a 40 m² suite a second 120–160 cm (47–63 in) horizontal in the living area (inference).

Corridors, restaurant and spa 206. The Drawing Hotel's corridors and the Negresco spa's heritage murals are the two documented models: a series that repeats along a floor with the subject changing, and a large flat mural rather than a framed canvas 20648. In Monaco, Hôtel Hermitage's latest refurbishment phase delivered 40 renovated rooms and suites with Diamond Suites by Pierre-Yves Rochon in an aqua, blue and beige palette 114; the Riviera and Monaco have their own page in this section. For a programme that must repeat across five floors without two rooms matching, the mechanism is one subject painted in palette variations per floor; iHomeArt paints palette changes and variations to order, with progress photos or video approved stage by stage.

What do French restaurants, bars and cafés hang?

Restaurant walls in France are treated by the designer as a total décor, and the documented examples use murals, mirrors, chandeliers and period frescoes more than framed paintings 20810970. The out-of-home food market reached EUR 128.3 billion in 2025 (+4.2%) on 11.97 billion meals, flat year on year, so growth was price-driven; France counts about 102,000 traditional restaurants, and counter service is now 59.2% of meals 118. Big Mamma's Gloria in Paris was designed by its in-house Studio Kiki as a 1970s Venetian villa with monumental chandeliers, gilded mirrors and thousands of exposed vinyl records, most pieces sourced from flea markets and antique dealers 208; the Lutetia keeps Art Deco frescoes in Bar Joséphine 109; Laura Gonzalez's Lapérouse and La Coupole are designer-led interiors 70. In Monaco, SBM redesigned Le Deck at Monte-Carlo Beach with Dorothée Delaye in 2025 and placed wild-rose sculptures up to 3.5 m by Céline Pagès across the resort 115.

The gap sits below that tier: no independent bistro, café or mid-market restaurant in the sources publishes an art programme, and Carré d'artistes' interiors advice warns against hanging opposite windows because of glare 55, a real constraint in a glazed street-front café. French 2026 trend guides converge on organic abstraction, botanical herbaria and misty landscapes in terracotta, sage green, slate blue and golden ochre 154, with the palette detail on the styles page. For a long dining-room wall viewed from the tables, that points to one panoramic of 200–300 cm (79–118 in) in those palettes, or a matte textured work where glare is the problem, rather than a row of small frames (inference).

What does a hotel FF&E buyer in France need from an art supplier?

Exact sizes in centimetres, a stated finish (rolled, stretched or framed), a named artist with a certificate, proof of process and one price per line: those are the points on which French canvas buyers and designers' contracts insist 127222431. A French 2026 fit-out guide budgets renovation at EUR 15,000–40,000 per key for 3-star, EUR 40,000–80,000 for premium boutique and EUR 55,000–120,000+ for five-star, and a full repositioning of a 30-room 3–4-star hotel at EUR 700,000–1,800,000 including common areas, fees and contingency 201. The same guide prices a bespoke headboard at EUR 4,500–7,500 against roughly EUR 1,200–1,300 for a standard furniture set, so one joinery item costs as much as several large original canvases 201. Neither that guide nor the international per-room benchmark published on Operto's French site (December 2024) carries a separate artwork line, so art is budgeted with FF&E or outside it (inference) 201202.

Provenance is the sensitive point 24. A reproduction seller states that the hand-painted canvas reproductions sold in France at EUR 250–800 are all painted in Asia 24, so a bare 'hand-painted' label reads as a reproduction claim unless a named artist, a signature, a certificate and process evidence come with it (inference); French platforms already treat the certificate as standard 22. Finish is the second friction: across French review sites the recurring complaints are size smaller than the photo implied, colours differing from screen, works arriving unstretched or on paper, and missing hanging hardware 127. An order becomes definitive in French design practice on a signed, dated quote marked 'bon pour accord' plus the deposit shown on it, with 30% at acceptance common 31.

Against that list, the verified iHomeArt terms are: every piece signed by the artist with a certificate of authenticity; progress photos or video with stage-by-stage approval; about one week to paint plus 3–7 days transit, 10–13 days door to door; free insured worldwide shipping by DHL, FedEx or USPS; finishes rolled, stretched or framed in gold, silver, black, white or wood; minimum order one piece with volume pricing from ten; quotes within one business day; no public prices. Sizes up to 254 cm are listed and every work can be painted larger, which covers the 200–300 cm lobby and restaurant formats above.

Which catalogue cuts fit a French hotel or restaurant brief?

Three registers recur in the sources: heritage-figurative and Art Deco in Paris, Mediterranean seascape and local heritage on the Riviera, and calm earthy abstraction in the boutique and restaurant tier 10948154. Time Out's Paris art-hotel list cites 19th-century paintings, Art Deco frescoes and modern lithographs 109; the Negresco spa uses murals of the flower market, the Promenade des Anglais and the Palais Lascaris 48; French 2026 trend guides name organic abstraction, botanical herbaria and misty landscapes in terracotta, sage, slate blue and golden ochre 154, with nature motifs reported by three independent French décor sources 157. The cuts below are live counts against those registers; the 250 cm vertical cut answers the tall Haussmann lobby and stair, and the guest-room cut above answers the 16 m² double (inference).

A 36-room boutique hotel in a Haussmann building, Paris — illustrative schedule (hypothetical; sized between the 34-room Villa-des-Prés [108] and the 37-room Hôtel Le Provençal [72], with 30 doubles and 6 suites over five floors; sizes above the listed 254 cm are painted to order)

An illustrative schedule built from catalogue references, not a client project. Every piece would be painted to the wall's own dimensions.

Questions buyers in France ask

How large is the French hotel pipeline in 2026?
Lodging Econometrics counted 126 projects and 12,908 rooms in France at the end of Q4 2025, fifth in Europe behind the UK, Germany, Turkey and Portugal 99; its Q3 2025 report gave 114 projects and 11,097 rooms, a 9% rise in project count year on year, and forecast 338 hotel openings across Europe in 2026 98.
Who chooses the art in a French hotel project?
On the projects that publish it, an art consultant or curator (Joséphine Fossey at La Villa Florentine in Lyon, VISTO at 25hours Terminus Nord) or the interior designer's own commissions; the consultants argue for a dedicated budget set at project inception, from mood boards and zoning plans 107103112.
Do French hotels hang originals or prints?
Both, by tier: palaces publicise collections (Le Negresco's 6,000+ works, Cheval Blanc's Peter Marino selection), while boutique openings often buy through suppliers that mix prints, wallpaper and commissions; Villa-des-Prés, which hangs only large-format originals, is the exception in the sources found 10511048108109.
What does a hotel renovation cost per room in France?
A French 2026 fit-out guide gives EUR 15,000–40,000 per key for 3-star, EUR 40,000–80,000 for premium boutique and EUR 55,000–120,000+ for five-star, and puts a full repositioning of a 30-room 3–4-star hotel at EUR 700,000–1,800,000 including common areas and fees 201.
What size painting fits a French hotel guest room?
The Atout France classification sets a 4-star double at 16 m² excluding bathroom and a suite at 40 m² 203; a French guide for 3.20 m bedrooms sizes above-bed art at two-thirds of the bed width, 100–110 cm for a 160 cm bed, with a minimum 120 × 80 cm horizontal on the facing wall 153.
How do I keep 30 rooms from looking identical with one supplier?
The documented French models vary the piece per room: Le Negresco decorates each of its 124 rooms differently and Drawing House gives each of its 143 rooms its own fresco or framed works 105206. Painted to order, one subject can be produced in palette variations per floor, with progress photos approved before dispatch.
Does décor matter to hotel guests in France?
Coach Omnium's 2024 study of 621 French and European guests found decoration important for 47% of travellers and very important for a third, behind cleanliness, which 71% named as the essential criterion; only 21% called a desk or work surface superfluous, and noise was the subject of 48% of complaints 205.
