Art for hotels and restaurants in Spain

Spain expects nearly 775 new hotels and about 52,000 rooms between 2025 and 2028, around 13,000 of them five-star, and hotel investment passed EUR 4.2 billion in 2025 114. The documented art programmes run from about 1,500 pieces at Four Seasons Madrid, where 75 selected proposals were reproduced by room type, to one original abstract in each of Sir Victor Barcelona's 91 rooms 117128. Coastal openings such as Kimpton Los Monteros name their interior designers and no art consultant 120. This page covers the pipeline, who decides, the scale each space takes, what an FF&E schedule needs from a painter, and an illustrative schedule for a 41-room hotel.

How big is Spain's hotel pipeline, and where is it?

Industry estimates put nearly 775 new hotels and about 52,000 rooms in Spain for 2025–2028, with five-star hotels expected to add around 13,000 rooms and the pipeline weighted 79% to four- and five-star properties 114. Hotel investment exceeded EUR 4.2 billion in 2025, 18% of the European total, split Canary Islands 22%, Barcelona 16%, Balearic Islands 15% and Madrid 9% 114. Spanish chains have committed over EUR 5 billion to expansion and renovation through 2030 114.

The named projects sit where the villa buyers already are. On the Costa del Sol, Kimpton Los Monteros Marbella reopened on 28 February 2025 with 195 rooms including 60 suites, interiors by El Equipo Creativo and guest rooms by Cristina Carulla Studio 120. Don Carlos Marbella reopened in summer 2025 with 284 rooms by Jaime Beriestain, and Fairmont Hacienda Costa del Sol opened on 20 February 2025 with 153 rooms and suites plus 47 villas after a EUR 120 million investment 122. Still projected are Four Seasons Marbella (about 120 keys plus 166 branded units by Richard Meier, EUR 650–740 million, first deliveries expected end-2029), the EUR 380 million Las Dunas Club W Hotel (186 rooms, earliest 2027) and a 120-room Waldorf Astoria Marbella for 2029 121122.

In the Balearics, Mondrian Ibiza opened on 28 April 2024 with 154 rooms and Four Seasons Resort Mallorca at Formentor on 16 August 2024 123124. The 2026 slate lists Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra in Calvià (131 rooms), Bless Ibiza (461 rooms, Lázaro Rosa-Violán Studio), Nômade Temple Portinatx (182 rooms), Gran Hotel Margalida (29 rooms) and Terreno Barrio Hotel Palma (41 rooms, Ohlab) 125. Madrid adds Mercer Madrid (61 rooms) and the Radisson Collection Edificio Generali (154 rooms, Estudio Lamela, 2027) 125115. Barcelona's Hotel Arts had all 432 rooms and suites redone in 2025, and Soho House opened its Pool House on Tibidabo in November 2025 129126.

Branded residences follow the same map: Colliers expects more than 1,200 units by 2027, around 900 of them in Málaga province, and a July 2025 monitor counted 47 projects across Spain and Portugal with Spain holding 49% of the units, roughly 23 Spanish projects by inference 131208. The packages stop at furniture: Design Hills is 'fully furnished by Dolce & Gabbana Casa' and EPIC Marbella credits 56 of 74 residences to Fendi Casa, and neither mentions art 205206.

Who chooses the art in a Spanish hotel?

In the Madrid palaces a curator or art consultancy appointed by the owner; in Barcelona and the islands a gallery, collective or the artist directly; on the Costa del Sol the interiors studio, whose releases name no art consultant 117123120. Four Seasons Hotel Madrid holds about 1,500 paintings, photographs and sculptures assembled by ex-Sotheby's curator Paloma Fernández-Iriondo through a four-year competition across the fine-arts schools of Madrid, Málaga and Seville: over 500 submissions, 75 proposals selected and reproduced for the different room and suite types, and ten plaster botanical models reproduced more than 300 times for guest rooms 117. Rosewood Villa Magna (150-plus rooms, reopened late 2021) displays more than 380 works curated by ArtLink 118. Mandarin Oriental Ritz's collection, curated by VISTO to dialogue with the Prado opposite, includes 14 photographic portraits by Paula Anta in the Pictura bar, a gold-and-silver-leaf ceiling sculpture at the entrance and hand-painted murals in the top suites 175.

Outside Madrid the model is lighter and closer to the artist. Sir Victor Barcelona (91 rooms, 2019) placed abstract works by Barcelona painter Bernat Daviu in every guest room against neutral palettes 128. Mondrian Ibiza's collection was assembled by the London collective Gone Rogue, with a lobby 'Gallery of Things' of art and ceramics 123. Six Senses Ibiza hangs works selected by Gallery Baró in its private villas and ran Caroline Rennequin as artist-in-residence in April–May 2026 176. Soho House's Pool House hangs over 80 works by nearly 30 Barcelona-connected artists across the parlour, lounge, stairwell and snug 126. At the small end, the 26-room Hotel Rhin Garden uses one painting by Carla Tarruella and photographs by Elena López Lamadrid, chosen with its designer Sandra Tarruella 124.

On the coast the designer's schedule matters more than a curator's brief. Kimpton Los Monteros' release names two design studios and four F&B venues but no art consultant 120. Mallorca's designer round-up credits Magnus Ehrland (El Llorenç) and DREIMETA (Bikini Island) for hotel interiors without saying where art is bought 87. Lázaro Rosa-Violán, the studio behind Bless Ibiza, states over 500 completed projects and is described as running in-house ateliers with sculptors, painters and carpenters 7978. LA Studio (Madrid, Marbella, Mallorca, Ibiza) does contract work for hotels and restaurants through its own art gallery 75. This suggests two routes into a Spanish hotel: the curator's brief in the Madrid palaces, and the FF&E schedule in coastal and island properties, where a painter working to size and palette is specified rather than collected.

What scale do the lobby, guest rooms, corridors, restaurant and spa take?

The published dimensions show works over one metre in public rooms, one original per guest room in the boutique model, and reproduction by room type once a hotel passes a few hundred keys 169128117.

  • Lobby. Casa Decor 2025 hung Pablo Manso's 'Levitando' (110 × 195 cm) in its Piedra Ibiza lobby space, the largest published painting dimension from a Spanish show interior 169. Four Seasons Madrid's staircase wall carries 1,500 brass fragments on a curved surface 117. This suggests a lobby wall read from the door across a tall volume needs 200–250 cm (79–98 in) on its long side or a stacked pair; that is an inference.
  • Guest room and suite. Four Seasons solved volume by reproducing 75 proposals by room type; Sir Victor hung an original in each of 91 rooms 117128. The room counts now opening are large: Kimpton 195 with 60 suites, Bless Ibiza 461, Hotel Arts 432 120125129. Spanish 2025 living-room guidance shows XL canvases at 150 × 100, 165 × 132, 160 × 120 and 180 × 118 cm, one piece rather than a composition, and Casa Decor 2025 hung a 100 × 140 cm abstract in a suite 133169. Inference: a headboard wall takes a 120–150 cm (47–59 in) horizontal, a suite a 150–200 cm (59–79 in) piece plus a second in the sitting area. Repetition without two rooms matching is where painting to order differs from stock: one brief, one palette, each canvas a variation.
  • Corridor. Four Seasons places art in hallways and Soho House in its stairwell 117126. Inference: same-format verticals of about 90 × 120 cm (35 × 47 in) at each landing, varied within one family.
  • Restaurant and bar. The Pictura bar carries 14 commissioned portraits; Kimpton runs four F&B venues; the Pool House has two bars and a restaurant 175120126. Inference: one long wall per venue at 150–250 cm (59–98 in), or a run of 60–90 cm (24–35 in) panels along a banquette.
  • Spa. Four Seasons Madrid places José Cháfer sculptures in the spa; Kimpton describes natural materials, terracotta tiles and organic curves; Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra says art runs through rooms, gardens and terraces 117120125. Inference: calm, textured pieces in off-white, sand and sage at 90–150 cm (35–59 in).

Palette follows the openings: Nômade Temple Ibiza is built in white stone, sabina wood and handmade terracotta, Don Carlos in a Mediterranean natural-materials scheme, Kimpton in geometric patterns, terracotta and vivid accents, while the Ritz works in gold and silver leaf 125122120175. This suggests a coastal register of lime white, sand, terracotta and cobalt and a gilded register in the Madrid palaces, an inference from four properties.

What do restaurants, bars and cafés hang?

Restaurants and bars are the larger half of Spanish hospitality, EUR 116.2 billion in 2024 against EUR 50.0 billion for accommodation, but restaurant turnover grew only 3.1% to September 2025 and profitability fell 0.9% 116. The documented supply for independent F&B is wholesale and rental rather than commission. Iglú Tiendas, a Spanish wholesaler of hand-painted canvases, names restaurants, bars, cafés, hotels and casas rurales among its customers, with a EUR 250 minimum order, volume-tiered pricing on request and sizes from 30 × 30 cm to a 60 × 120 cm panoramic, without stating where the canvases are painted 165. FLECHA, a Madrid platform of more than 450 artists, rents works to offices, hotels and restaurants for a fixed period 'without the economic commitment that purchase implies' 51. At the top, the restaurant wall is commissioned like the lobby: Paula Anta's 14 portraits in the Ritz's Pictura bar, and the bars of Soho House's Pool House 175126. Between the EUR 250 wholesale order and the commissioned wall sits a gap: a single 150–250 cm (59–98 in) canvas for a dining room's long wall, or matched panels above a banquette, at sizes the wholesale channel does not stock 165. That is where a made-to-order painter fits (an inference, not a documented practice).

What does a hotel FF&E buyer need from an art supplier?

The Spanish supply has a hole between stocked decorative canvases, sold in fixed catalogue formats, and gallery originals, which one Barcelona gallerist puts at about EUR 3,000 entry with a standard 50% commission 231154. Westwing Spain's largest hand-painted piece with a confirmed size is 102 × 102 cm at EUR 439, and its largest item, 131 × 163 cm, is a digital print 161160. KunstLoft lists XXL hand-painted oils at EUR 429–709 with a size filter that runs to 200 × 150 cm, ready to ship in catalogue formats only, with no country of production stated 231. Iglú's wholesale range stops at 60 × 120 cm 165.

What the projects above imply an FF&E schedule needs, and what iHomeArt can state:

  • Size to the wall. Every work is painted to order in any size; 2 m-plus and panoramic formats are normal and the catalogue lists sizes up to 254 cm (100 in).
  • Repetition without matching rooms. Palette changes and variations are possible, so a 40-room order is one brief painted 40 ways, the volume problem Four Seasons Madrid solved by reproduction 117.
  • Finish to the installer's spec. Rolled, stretched or framed (gold, silver, black, white, wood). A workshop in Calpe quotes EUR 100–150 to mount a 100 × 150 cm canvas on a reinforced stretcher in 2–5 days and accepts rolled canvases, so shipping rolled and stretching locally is an option for the largest formats 31.
  • Programme certainty. About one week to paint plus 3–7 days transit, 10–13 days door to door, free insured shipping by DHL, FedEx or USPS, quotes within one business day.
  • Approval before dispatch. Progress photos or video with stage-by-stage approval; Madrid commission workshop DecoPared advertises the same practice, holding dispatch until the client is satisfied 138.
  • Documentation. Every piece signed by the artist with a certificate of authenticity; minimum order one piece, volume pricing from ten.

Where a hotel wants collectible names, the curators and galleries above are the route 118176; where it wants hand-painted originals at wall scale for 40 rooms and three public spaces, no Spanish stockist found sizes to the wall beyond its catalogue formats 231165.

Which catalogue cuts fit Spanish hotels?

Coastal openings specify white stone, sabina wood, terracotta and natural materials, so the cuts that fit are textured off-whites, sand and terracotta abstracts and sea blues, with bold abstraction for lobbies and bars 125122120. Casa Decor 2025 featured ochre, brown and earth-toned gold-leaf pieces and a textured beige wall relief, and its 2026 edition leaned to ceramics, marble and relief wall pieces rather than flat canvases, which suggests textured surfaces are the current designer preference 169170. Counts below are live.

Questions buyers in Spain ask

How many hotel rooms is Spain adding, and where?
Industry pipeline estimates give nearly 775 new establishments and about 52,000 rooms for 2025–2028, around 13,000 of them five-star; 2025 hotel investment exceeded EUR 4.2 billion, split Canary Islands 22%, Barcelona 16%, Balearic Islands 15% and Madrid 9% 114.
Who chooses the art in a Spanish luxury hotel?
In the documented Madrid openings an appointed curator or consultancy: Paloma Fernández-Iriondo at Four Seasons, ArtLink at Rosewood Villa Magna, VISTO at Mandarin Oriental Ritz 117118175. Coastal releases such as Kimpton Los Monteros name design studios but no art consultant, so the interiors studio specifies the art 120.
How do large hotels avoid identical art in every room?
Four Seasons Madrid selected 75 proposals from over 500 submissions and reproduced them by room and suite type, with ten plaster models reproduced over 300 times 117. Sir Victor Barcelona instead hung an original abstract by Bernat Daviu in each of its 91 rooms 128. Painting to order allows one brief with a variation per room.
What size painting does a Spanish hotel lobby need?
The largest sourced painting in a Spanish show-interior is 110 × 195 cm, hung in Casa Decor 2025's lobby space, while Four Seasons Madrid's staircase carries a 1,500-fragment brass installation 169117. A tall lobby wall therefore wants 200–250 cm on the long side, which is an inference from those spaces.
What palette do the new coastal hotels use?
Natural materials and warm earth. Nômade Temple Ibiza (2026) is built in white stone, sabina wood and handmade terracotta, Don Carlos Marbella reopened in a Mediterranean natural-materials scheme, and Kimpton Los Monteros pairs terracotta tiles with geometric patterns and vivid accents; the Madrid palaces work in gold and silver leaf instead 125122120175.
Can restaurants and cafés rent art instead of buying?
Yes. FLECHA, a Madrid platform of more than 450 artists, rents works to offices, hotels and restaurants for a fixed period without the commitment of purchase 51. Wholesaler Iglú Tiendas sells hand-painted canvases to restaurants, bars and cafés from a EUR 250 minimum order, in sizes up to 60 × 120 cm 165.
Do branded residences in Marbella come with art?
Not in the packages documented. Design Hills by Dolce & Gabbana is 'fully furnished by Dolce & Gabbana Casa' and its write-up names no artwork, and EPIC Marbella credits 56 of 74 residences to Fendi Casa without mentioning art 205206. Colliers expects more than 1,200 branded units in Spain by 2027, around 900 in Málaga province 131.
