What art is for sale in Oman, and what does it cost?

One Muscat gallery posts prices, and its ceiling for a stocked Omani canvas is OMR 3,850 for 110 × 160 cm. Stal Gallery in Madinat Sultan Qaboos lists Juma Al Harthy's oil ‘Nakhal Fort’ at that figure, the top of its price filter, about OMR 2,190 per m² (September 2026) ¹. One-metre-class Omani works on the same shop run OMR 630–1,700 (‘Manah Ruins’ 100 × 80 cm, OMR 1,700; ‘The Soul of Heritage’ 100 × 100 cm, OMR 630), H.H. Sayyida Afra Al Said's mixed-media ‘Birds of Paradise’, 75 × 135 cm, is OMR 2,000, and small works are OMR 320–500, a 25 × 35 cm ‘Camel Racing’ at OMR 320 being about OMR 3,660 per m² ⁴³.

Above about 1.8 m² there is no posted price. Anwar Sonya's ‘Omani Wedding’, 170 × 500 cm (2025), his ‘Omani Drummers’, 180 × 110 cm (2024), and ‘Faces II’, 171 × 216 cm, are all price by request ²¹³⁴⁴. The largest work with a public price is 160 cm long, so a 2 m Omani canvas from a named artist is quoted, not listed ¹⁵³. No auction result for Sonya, Hassan Meer or Radhika Khimji — the one Omani painter of the three with London gallery representation ¹²⁶ — surfaced at Bonhams, Sotheby's or Christie's ¹²⁸, and Omani painters number in single digits on Saatchi Art and Artsper ¹²⁷¹²⁸.

What sells is heritage. Stal's product titles are forts (Nakhal, Manah), wadis, the Mutrah corniche, weddings, drumming women and camel racing; abstraction is a minority and even then built from tribal, maritime and desert symbols ⁴⁵. Its 2025 and 2026 summer shows grouped the same established painters — Sonya, Meer, Idris Al Hooti, Adnan Al Raisi, Al Harthy, Hussain Obaid, Sayyida Afra ⁵¹²³. Stal represents 27–29 artists and takes commission and advisory enquiries for homes, hotels and offices ⁴³⁴.

The rest of the circuit is thin. Bait Muzna in Old Muscat, founded in 2000, closed in March 2025 and now offers only consultancy and framing ⁷. As of August 2025 the commercial venues are Stal and Gallery Sarah at Bait Al Zubair; the Omani Society for Fine Arts stages ministry-backed shows without prices, and Alia Gallery in Al Rusayl is described as the largest private gallery but no price list for it was found ⁸¹²⁴⁴⁷. Meer said in 2014 that ‘Omanis were not collecting art, expats bought the works’, and a 2025 ArtReview essay reports that private collecting for home display is still not an established practice, because the domestic sphere is barred to non-relatives, and that artists at the December 2024 Affordable Art Show complained local taste favours small decorative prints over large-scale conceptual work ⁹⁴⁹. Below the gallery, Rebeca Nigrinis in Qurum prices originals at OMR 60 for 40 × 40 cm and OMR 210 for 90 × 60 cm — roughly OMR 340–390 per m², one-fifth of Stal's one-metre works — and takes commissions from designers and businesses (September 2026) ¹¹.

The four chains stock printed canvas, framed calligraphy and three factory ‘hand-painted’ SKUs at OMR 1.9–335, and nothing hand-painted above 140 cm. IKEA Oman lists 27 ready-to-hang items, all printed canvas or framed posters, at OMR 1.900–27.500 ¹³¹³⁰. Danube Home's 223 wall-art SKUs are dominated by framed Islamic calligraphy at OMR 32.16–42.06 in black, gold, silver, white or oak frames; only the 80 × 120 cm ‘Marrakech’ acrylic series carries a hand-painted claim ¹²¹²¹. 2XL Home lists 60 items labelled ‘Painting’ at OMR 55–215; its product pages would not load, so whether they are printed is unverified ¹¹⁷. IDdesign, the KARE licensee, sells framed and glass prints at OMR 75–335; none of the four states a country of origin ¹²².

Danube Home delivers to Muscat, Sohar, Salalah and Barka, so its OMR 22–43 offer reaches Salalah, where no gallery was found in any source, while OC Home excludes Salalah and Jebel Akhdar and quotes 5–7 working days for accessories ¹²²⁵. Dhofar and the interior carry roughly 50% higher last-mile costs than Muscat ¹⁸.

Outside the chains, art reaches Omani walls through classifieds and WhatsApp, a framer that used to be a gallery, Dubai consultancies and Saudi print shops; the middle band is served by individuals, not businesses. On OpenSooq a Muscat seller offered a 185 × 150 cm original oil of a man beside a camel for OMR 700 on 6 September 2026, pitched at ‘villas, majlis, hotels, offices’; a 90 × 90 cm acrylic by Ali Alalawi was OMR 500 on 17 August 2026, contact by WhatsApp ¹¹¹¹¹². The low end of the same page is decorative — framed floral paintings at OMR 20, a warehouse clearance in Al Azaiba of ‘hundreds of pieces for OMR 2,000’ — and one listing offers portraits or paintings made to order, so commission requests travel through classifieds ¹¹³.

Bait Muzna now competes as a ‘premium framing’ service and consultancy whose offer mixes originals with ‘high-quality reproductions’, large-format inkjet printing, framing, transport and installation ⁷¹²⁹³³. That is the volume channel for hotels: its projects run Marriott Salalah (237 rooms, 2009), Millennium Qurum (270 rooms, 2016), Mysk Al Mouj (193 rooms, 2017), Sheraton and W (2019), with Oman Arab Bank (2013) the one named bank ³³. Stal's services page bundles the same framing, transport and installation, including ‘art prints for offices’; both galleries name hotels, not corporate headquarters, as clients ³⁴.

Imports arrive at both ends. Since 2007 the Dutch agency Enterprise & Art has had nearly 20 European painters produce more than 200 realist canvases of Omani forts, oryx, horses and camels for the Royal Court, painted from photographs, one cited example 80 × 100 cm ³⁶⁷⁸. Dubai-based Art Painting Lab and the consultancy Artelier both list Oman among their markets ⁴⁴⁴³. At the other end, Arabic searches for canvas wall art with ‘Muscat’ return almost only Saudi print-on-demand shops selling custom-size printed canvases, and cross-border online purchases of furnishings come mainly from China ¹¹⁶¹⁷. The Muscat Art fair (200+ artists in 2025; next 28–30 October 2026) asks exhibitors to price in OMR plus EUR or USD ¹⁵²¹¹⁴.

Complaints are documented only indirectly: the Consumer Protection Authority recovered OMR 24,500 from 1,851 e-commerce complaints logged to August 2025, which suggests limited recourse against remote sellers, and return windows are 10–15 days and defect-based ¹⁹²⁵. None of the four chains states a country of origin for its canvases ¹²².

About OMR 14 printed, OMR 23–55 factory-painted or large canvas, OMR 110–195 framed at the design chains, OMR 250–390 from a private seller or expat studio, and OMR 630–2,200 at the gallery — roughly 45× to 155× between the printed floor and the gallery band. The figures are arithmetic from listed sizes and prices in September 2026 ⁴¹²².

Small gallery works carry the highest rate per m², while the cheapest rate above 2 m² in Omani retail is 2XL's 250 × 150 cm series at OMR 45–55 per m² ⁴¹¹⁷. The band between roughly OMR 100 and OMR 600 per m² for a hand-painted 1–2 m canvas has almost no visible supply beyond individual studios and one classified ⁴¹¹¹. Stal's OMR 3,850 is about USD 10,000 at the 0.385 peg ¹⁵³.

In the sizes no one in Oman stocks and the price band no one in Oman fills. The largest Omani canvas with a public price is 160 cm long; anything bigger is commissioned at an unpublished price ¹⁵³. The largest chain canvas is 250 × 150 cm at OMR 169–206, process unverified; Danube's examples stop at 120 cm and IDdesign's at 180 cm ^11712122. A buyer wanting a single 2 m+ canvas today chooses between a OMR 206 chain piece and a private commission with no benchmark ¹²⁸.

Demand at that size sits more in the institutional tier than in homes. Hotel packages procured through Bait Muzna cover every room plus corridors and public areas and mix originals with reproductions and prints ³³. In the two flagship 2024 Muscat openings, lobby and bar art was commissioned from named Omani painters while corridor art was a thematic run of oils whose makers go unnamed — the tier where made-to-order canvases would be specified, an inference from the coverage ¹⁰²¹⁰¹. The villa fit-out firms checked state no art-sourcing policy, so art enters after handover, chosen by the owner or a gallery consultant ⁶³.

Omani painter Saeed Al Alawi complained in 2019 of a ‘foreigner complex’ among Arab buyers who prefer foreign work, so made-to-order canvases sit best as the room-tier and large-format complement to named Omani artists, not their replacement ⁶⁰. And local lead-time expectations are set by the furniture chains at 7–10 working days, so 10–13 days door to door is comparable, not fast ²⁵.
