Why do Saudi villa walls need bigger paintings than the size guides assume?
Because the rooms are taller and longer than the European rooms most guides are written for, and because there are more reception rooms per house. The villa building rules set the net height of each floor between 2.70 m and 3.50 m and allow a ground floor plus one upper floor on plots from 200 m² 148. ROSHN markets its 2026 SEDRA Curated Collection in Riyadh (plots 400–650 m²) with ceilings up to 3.2 m and 'expansive majlis areas' 149. Riyadh villas listed above SAR 10 million in September 2026 sit on plots of about 600–1,250 m² in Al Malqa, Al Narjis, Al Arid, Al Nakhil, Hittin and Al Rabi 158.
One such house in Al Rabi (1,100 m² plot, 1,155 m² built, SAR 11 million, August 2026) has two men's majlis, a dining room and a women's gathering space on the ground floor, a basement with a large hall, a library and a 'heritage majlis', and a family hall with loft plus a master suite with lounge upstairs 155. That is on the order of 6–10 reception-grade walls of 6–12 m each, which suggests a full programme of 8–15 large works — mostly 2–3 m horizontals with one or two tall verticals for the entrance void; an inference from the plot footprint, not a measurement 155. The only measured Saudi living rooms in the evidence are five Jeddah villas surveyed in 2014: 6–7 m wide by 8–13 m long, with 3 m ceilings in most and 4 m in one, and their walls carried paintings of historical and natural subjects, framed wall art and floral painted panels 162.
What does the men's majlis wall need?
A wide horizontal or panoramic work of 2–4 m (79–157 in), hung above the sofa backs, in a non-figurative subject. Perimeter seating with an open centre is described as 'non-negotiable' in a modern Saudi majlis 91. A February 2026 luxury-majlis specification puts a 24-person room at about 9 × 11 m with a 4.2 m host wall and two 7.4 m lateral walls, a ceiling of no less than 4.2 m, and sofa sections of 240 cm and 300 cm with a 121 cm back 90. That leaves a hangable band from roughly 1.3–1.4 m up to the ceiling along walls of 7–11 m, which favours horizontals of 2–4 m or a series hung in rhythm with the seating sections — a derived figure, not a survey 91. A mainstream new-build is smaller: ROSHN's VL4 villa majlis is nearly 26 m², so its longest free wall is about 5 m 150. Saudi retail guidance says the canvas should span about 75% of the wall behind the seating, and the largest majlis pieces it offers are 135 × 185 cm 83.
On palette, a 580 m² ground floor in Hittin by Eva Interiors (men's majlis, ladies' majlis, dining wing) used sand beige, soft cream, sunbaked terracotta and gold with restrained Najdi triangles, and its feature walls were cast gypsum, silver leaf and mirror rather than hung paintings, so in this tier a canvas competes with architectural decoration 124. On subject, published fatwas prohibit hanging images of animate beings while permitting trees, mountains and rivers 7879, yet Saudi retailers openly sell horse, animal and female-face canvases alongside calligraphy 88; acceptability is decided household by household, so for a formal majlis, calligraphy, landscape, abstract and heritage-architecture subjects are the low-risk default, with figurative work offered on request for private rooms 77.

The ladies' majlis and the family hall: where colour and florals go
These are the rooms where jewel tones, florals and gestural work appear, on a neutral base, and the family hall is the wall the household looks at every day. In Saudi homes the women of the house often oversee the decoration of the majlis 92. In the Hittin villa the ladies' majlis is reached from the family entrance, 'open and connected to the rest of the home, yet distinct', with a cast-gypsum floral feature wall whose motif repeats in the carpet 124. In Yasmin Alsdais's MUH residence in Riyadh the second-floor majlis is art-led — jewel tones, gestural paintings and sculptural furniture in a gallery-like arrangement — on a base she keeps 'minimal and calm' in beige and grey so the artworks stand out 111. Nojoud Alrumaihi's villa hangs a gallery wall of faceless figurative prints by Ethar Balkhair on a primarily neutral palette 126. A 2026 Riyadh villa guide reports designers moving from neutral bases towards earthy tones, warm oak and 'Wild Blooms' accents 308, and a Sayidaty majlis guide recommends paintings of Saudi landmarks 'in varied sizes' 344.
The family hall upstairs is the working room: during the 2020 lockdown 52% of villa employees worked from living rooms and only 42% at a desk and chair 161. Measured Jeddah living rooms of 6–7 m by 8–13 m give a cross-room viewing distance of 6–7 m, so a single canvas needs to be about 1.8–3 m (71–118 in) wide, or a multi-panel run of 3–4 m, to read from the opposite seating; a standard 1.2 m (47 in) painting reads as a small object 162.

Dining room (maqlat): seated viewing, very long tables
The maqlat is viewed seated along a table, so its long wall takes one wide horizontal at a lower centre height. Riyadh listings describe ground floors composed of men's majlis, women's majlis, maqlat and halls; a 625 m² villa in Al Munsiyah offers a men's maqlat, a women's maqlat and a separate dining hall 160. A villa in Al Arid on a 2,023 m² plot lists a dining room seating 32 people, which implies a table of roughly 8–10 m and a room at least 11–13 m long — panoramic-format walls 156. Gulf guidance written for standard 3 m dining rooms suggests 100–150 cm works, rising to 150–200 cm in double-height rooms 163; the Saudi rooms above are larger than that guidance assumes. In designer-owned Riyadh homes the dining focal point is a single large piece: a Marcantonio × Scarlet Splendour artwork in Shahad Alazzaz's dining room 125, a large 20th-century Japanese byōbu screen in Nebras Aljoaib's townhouse 107, and a large Ranya Sarkbi painting in Prince Sultan bin Fahad's residence 339.
What fits the double-height entrance and the stair void?
A tall vertical of 2–3 m (79–118 in), or a stacked pair; this is the only place in a Saudi villa where that proportion is right. Listings phrase the space as a 'hall open to the floor above' (bahw) 160. Two permitted floors at 2.70–3.50 m net each give a void of roughly 6–7.5 m floor to ceiling — derived from the rules, not measured 148. A 'double height' villa on a 240 m² plot in East Riyadh was listed at SAR 1.8 million in September 2026, so the void now appears at the small-plot end of the market too 177. UAE guidance puts double-height spaces at 4.5–6 m and centres art at 165–180 cm there, against 145–155 cm in 3 m rooms 163. In Riyadh homes the foyer carries the first statement: Nour Kelani's villa greets visitors with a large grey-toned canvas of a woman by Safwan Dahoul 123, and Shahad Alazzaz's entrance foyer holds sculptures by Mona Heikal and Lars Zech 125.
Master suite and the bed-head wall
A calm work of 100–150 cm (39–59 in) over the bed and, where the suite has its own lounge, a second larger piece. Affluent listings in both cities describe a master suite with lounge or with wardrobe rooms 155168. Gulf guidance suggests 100–120 cm over a king bed 163. Nebras Aljoaib uses a 19th-century lacquered Coromandel screen as the headwall of a Riyadh residence to introduce scale and surface depth within an otherwise restrained interior 115. Saudi retail advice assigns calming nature scenes to bedrooms 86, and Mesaky lists bedrooms with the same beige, sand and light-brown palette it recommends for the majlis 84. Because the bedroom has no guest audience, it is also where figurative or animal subjects sit most comfortably for households that hang them — an inference from the contradiction between the fatwa position and what Saudi shops sell 77.

Home office and library
A dedicated home office is a minority room, so 'office art' in Saudi houses is usually a living-room or bedroom wall. During the 2020 lockdown villa employees worked 52% from living rooms, 37% from bedrooms, 6% from dining rooms and 5% from a majlis, and 99 of 300 respondents worked in 10 m² or less 161. Where a study exists — the Al Rabi villa pairs a library with its basement heritage majlis 155 — Saudi retailers pitch city photography or 'inspirational' art for offices 86, and one Saudi artist's limited-edition AlUla mountains print is marketed for executive offices and spacious majlis at SAR 7,699 85.
The basement hall: the longest, darkest walls in the house
The basement is the largest and least-lit floor, and it is where bold colour and heritage pattern belong. Basements may cover 100% of the plot with a 2.70 m minimum net height 148. The Al Rabi villa's basement holds a large hall, a library and a heritage majlis 155; Shahad Alazzaz hangs a Martin Villalonga painting in her basement entertaining lounge 125; sunken conversation pits are reported returning to GCC villas in 2026 134. The precedents for colour on a Saudi wall are local: Al-Qatt Al-Asiri, the women's geometric wall painting in bright colours on white gypsum in Asir reception rooms, is UNESCO-listed 93; Al Sadu weaving works in reds and oranges in rhythmic geometric repetition 95; and the Najdi triangle now appears 'everywhere' in Riyadh as an unofficial regional emblem 349.
Apartments, compound villas and the giga-project homes
These are villa-length walls under standard ceilings — or, for the giga-projects, walls that are not yet built. Riyadh's luxury apartments above SAR 4 million run only 130–339 m² (a 339 m² penthouse in Al Sahafah at SAR 5.68 million), so wall lengths are villa-room scale but ceilings are tower height 171. Jeddah's beachfront apartments in Al Shati run 428–586 m² at SAR 5.5–13 million with Red Sea views 170. Compound villas rented to expatriates are mostly 240–300 m² at SAR 150,000–230,000 a year and usually furnished, so art there is tenant-scale, 100–150 cm (39–59 in) 172. Master-planned communities are shifting from villa-dominated layouts towards townhouses and low-rise apartments 166, though 54% of surveyed residents still prefer villas and 93% of high-income Saudis are interested in giga-project homes 165. Diriyah plans 18,000+ residential units with 300+ branded residences 173; Wadi Safar is selling Oberoi, Aman, Chedi and Faena villa collections, the Faena marketed as 'curatorial living', with no floor areas or ceiling heights published 174; Red Sea's Shura Island has 305 residences with first handovers in April 2026 and no unit sizes published 175.
Where does made-to-order fit?
Above 200 cm, which is exactly where the majlis, maqlat and family-hall walls above begin. Local supply is deep below that line: Home Centre's largest hand-painted canvas is 200 × 150 cm at SAR 999, built as canvas over polystyrene 334335; Bloomr's 880-item collection tops out at 200 × 100 cm in its size filter, with a 150 × 200 cm acrylic at SAR 7,013 and a standard 120 × 80 cm at SAR 1,503 327; Al Rugaib's hand-painted Uttermost abstracts reach 127 × 188 cm at SAR 2,895 333; Zaitia in Riyadh, which works with 150+ design offices, prices ready-made hand-painted work at about SAR 1,000–1,900 12. Mille sells European-made hand-painted panels at a standard 220 × 150 cm, custom 60–300 cm, from SAR 6,110 with 6–14 weeks delivery 297. At the top, Papillon lists Abdullah Hammas paintings at SAR 110,000–120,000 for 150 × 180 cm and 205 × 175 cm 11. A Saudi critic writes that home art-buying is still taking shape, with 'small painting' shows under 50 cm and SAR 1,500 as the entry route 26; Christie's Saudi head says her clients 'don't want another poster' 338.
For a 2–4 m wall the choice is therefore a Saudi original at gallery or auction prices, a print, or a made-to-order original. iHomeArt paints its 1,455 catalogue works to order in any size — listed to 254 cm (100 in), every work paintable larger — in about a week, plus 3–7 days in transit (10–13 days door to door), with progress photos and approval at each stage before the piece ships. Palette changes are possible, which matters when the scheme is sand, cream, terracotta and gold 124. A villa programme of 8–15 works clears the ten-piece threshold for volume pricing; the minimum order is one piece, and quotes come within one business day. Shipping, certificates and finishes are set out on the country page.

Questions buyers in Saudi Arabia ask
- What goes on the dining-room (maqlat) wall?
- One wide horizontal, viewed seated along the table. Riyadh listings pair a men’s and a women’s maqlat with a separate dining hall 160, and an Al Arid villa seats 32 at dinner, which implies a table of 8–10 m and a panoramic wall 156. Designer-owned Riyadh homes hang a single large piece there rather than a group 125107339.
- What suits the basement hall?
- Bold colour and heritage pattern, because it is the largest and least-lit floor: basements may cover the whole plot at a 2.70 m minimum height 148, and the Al Rabi villa keeps a hall, library and heritage majlis there 155. Local precedents for colour are Al-Qatt Al-Asiri wall painting 93 and Al Sadu weaving in reds and oranges 95.
- How many paintings does a large Riyadh villa take?
- A SAR 11 million villa in Al Rabi lists two men's majlis, a women's hall, a dining room, a basement hall, a family hall and a master lounge 155. That gives roughly 6–10 reception-grade walls, which suggests 8–15 large works, mostly 2–3 m horizontals with one or two verticals for the entrance void — an inference, not a count 155.
- What size of art do apartments and compound villas take?
- Tenant scale, 100–150 cm (39–59 in). Riyadh apartments above SAR 4 million run only 130–339 m² 171, and expatriate compound villas of 240–300 m² at SAR 150,000–230,000 a year are usually furnished 172. Jeddah’s Al Shati beachfront apartments are larger, 428–586 m² with Red Sea views, and take villa-room sizes 170.
- Where do colour, florals and jewel tones go in a Saudi villa?
- In the ladies’ majlis and the family hall, on a neutral base. A Hittin ladies’ majlis has a cast-gypsum floral feature wall 124; Yasmin Alsdais keeps her Riyadh rooms beige and grey so jewel-toned gestural paintings stand out in the art-led majlis 111; the men’s majlis stays in sand, cream, terracotta and gold 124.
- Do Jeddah homes differ from Riyadh homes?
- The room programme is the same but the vocabulary and register differ. A Jeddah villa in Al Basateen lists three 'living rooms' on the ground floor where Riyadh listings say majlis and maqlat 169. Jeddah's heritage register is Hijazi coral stone, stained glass and mashrabiya ornament 350, and its beachfront apartments run 428–586 m² with Red Sea views 170.
- Is there a home-office wall in a Saudi villa?
- Usually not a dedicated one. In the 2020 lockdown villa employees worked 52% from living rooms, 37% from bedrooms and 5% from a majlis, a third of them in 10 m² or less 161. Where a study exists, as in the Al Rabi basement 155, Saudi retailers pitch city views or an AlUla landscape print at SAR 7,699 8685.
