Taste and styles in Saudi Arabia: what buyers hang, what they avoid

Saudi walls carry a recognisable list of subjects — desert and AlUla landscape, Najdi architecture and its triangle, Arabic calligraphy, Arabian horses and abstraction — and the new villa and hotel interiors put them on a sand, cream, terracotta and gold palette, with jewel tones reserved for the art-led majlis 8487124111349. Preferences are set room by room: the formal majlis and the corporate lobby default to heritage, landscape and calligraphy, while private rooms and younger collectors hang figurative and international work 77123126. The published religious rulings against animate imagery and the open retail trade in horses and female faces contradict each other, and this guide reports both 7888.

What subjects do Saudi buyers actually hang?

Landscape and heritage first, calligraphy second, abstraction as the modern default, and horses where the household allows them. A Saudi artist's buying guide urges buyers to choose works that reflect Saudi identity — desert landscapes, architectural heritage, local nature — and his store sorts its catalogue by 'Saudi nature', 'heritage & identity' and 'cities & architecture' (2024) 8785. A retailer's majlis guide lists Arabic calligraphy with gold or silver accents, bold abstracts, nature, Asir heritage architecture and animals such as horses (June 2025) 84. A Riyadh print brand's best-sellers in November 2023 were religious pieces, landscapes, moral sayings and name pieces 292, and a Najd canvas store leads with Islamic calligraphy, abstracts, gold-themed works, Arabian horses, florals and city views 296. For National Day, Sayidaty recommends paintings of national symbols and Kingdom landmarks in the majlis (September 2024) 344.

Heritage differs by city. In Riyadh the Najdi triangle 'Alfuraj' appears on walls, metro seats and packaging and has become an unofficial regional emblem (March 2026) 349. Jeddah's equivalent is Hijazi coral stone, roshan lattice and stained glass, as in Sami Angawi's Ash Shati house (September 2025) 350. Asir keeps its bright geometric Al-Qatt Al-Asiri wall painting, inscribed by UNESCO in 2017, with more than 1,200 documented pattern variations 9394.

The top of the market hangs the same subjects. All nine Saudi works at Sotheby's Origins II (January 2026) sold, led by Safeya Binzagr's figurative Jeddah street scene at US$2.06 million with fees 4, Mohammed Al Saleem's horizontal-band desert abstraction at US$756,000 and Mohamed Siam's calligraphy-based 'Camel Race' at US$94,500 316. Hotel programmes brief the same way: the Kimpton KAFD collection draws on Riyadh's landscape, cultural symbols and material heritage (2025) 54, and the Diriyah Sales Centre used Najdi paper-cuts and At-Turaif photographs (2023) 57. These map to the Landscape, Geometric and Animal cuts below; the catalogue's ten themes do not include calligraphy, so that subject is one to source from a Saudi calligrapher.

Which colours do Saudi interiors want on the canvas?

Sand, cream, beige and light brown are the base; gold is the accent; jewel tones are the deliberate exception. Two Saudi retailers' majlis guides both recommend an earthy palette of beige, sand and light brown (January 2024, June 2025), with black-and-white contrast as the alternative 8384. In Riyadh's Hittin district, Eva Interiors finished a c.580 m² formal ground floor in 'sand-hued beige and soft cream to sunbaked terracotta and accents of gold' that echo the desert (November 2025) 124. Yasmin Alsdais keeps the base of large Riyadh rooms minimal and calm — beige, grey sofas and walls — so that artworks stand out, then uses jewel tones and gestural paintings in the art-led majlis (April 2026) 111. Architect Shahad Alazzaz's home 'skews warm, not cool', with navy and burnished-gold sofas (June 2026) 125. A 2026 Riyadh villa guide says neutral bases remain popular but designers are moving to earthy tones, warm oak and bright accents, naming 'Wild Blooms' and 'Colour Blocking' as emerging trends 308.

Hotels follow two registers. Diriyah's Bab Samhan has sand-hued walls and light cream guestrooms (December 2024) 188, and the Red Sea and AlUla resorts move from rock and sand to sea in neutral tones of sand, stone and earth (July 2026) 347. Riyadh's lifestyle hotels go richer: W Riyadh uses green, ruby, gold and bronze accents with Al Sadu textiles (2026) 76183, and Four Seasons Riyadh's guestrooms use vivid greens and turquoise because Riyadh means 'garden' (2019) 346. Jeddah's Shangri-La takes a light palette with blue and beige accents (2022) 214. Folk colour exists too: Al Sadu weaving is bright reds and oranges in geometric repetition 95, and Asir majlis rooms carry bright geometric designs 92. In catalogue colour families the villa base is Beige, Cream, Terracotta, Gold and Brown; the majlis exception is Green, Teal, Red, Purple and Blue; the coast is Blue, Teal and White. Every iHomeArt work is painted to order, so a composition can be shifted into either register before it is started.

How much texture, and which finish?

Relief and material depth are expected; a flat print reads as a poster. Christie's Nour Kelani says Saudi buyers 'don't want another poster' (February 2025) 338. The walls themselves are textured: observed Jeddah villa living rooms had gold-and-beige hand-carved plaster ceilings and floral painted panels (fieldwork 2014, published 2018) 162; the Hittin villa's ladies' majlis has a cast-gypsum floral feature wall and silver-leafed columns (2025) 124; a Gulf luxury-majlis specification calls for three-coat marmorino plaster and gilded pilasters (February 2026) 90. Nebras Aljoaib anchors rooms with a lacquered Coromandel screen and a Japanese byōbu, with texture and material depth driving the choice (2025–2026) 115107. Hotel collections are mixed-media by default — textiles, embroidery, sculptural plasterwork, paper cuttings, ceramics — with painting one medium among many (2025) 189, and W Riyadh's lobby is anchored by a six-metre tapestry (2026) 183. Inference: on these walls a canvas competes with plaster relief and gilding, which suggests Textured & Plaster work and heavy impasto hold their own better than thin, flat abstraction.

A frame is expected at delivery. Saudi retailers offer frames in black, white, wood, champagne, gold, beige and silver (January 2024) 83; a Riyadh luxury store sells decorative canvases with aluminium or solid wooden frames (September 2026) 11; a Saudi Amazon reviewer gave a calligraphy canvas one star because it arrived 'without a frame, just fabric' (July 2025) 301. Mille in Riyadh sells its hand-painted panels framed and ready to hang at 220 × 150 cm 297, while Home Centre's 'hand-painted' canvases are stretched over polystyrene, 5 cm deep (September 2026) 335. iHomeArt's finishes are rolled, stretched or framed in gold, silver, black, white or wood, which covers the local frame vocabulary apart from champagne, and every piece is signed with a certificate of authenticity.

What should a painting for Saudi Arabia avoid?

For a formal majlis, a corporate reception or a gift, the low-risk subjects are calligraphy, landscape, architecture and abstraction; figurative and animal subjects are decided household by household. The published rulings are strict: Ibn Baz ruled that hand-painted pictures of living beings must be taken down, while boards with Qur'anic verses or good poetry may hang 'as a reminder' 77; IslamQA (1998) forbids hanging pictures of people, animals and birds, citing the advice to paint trees instead 78; Islamweb (2001) permits trees, mountains and rivers 79. The question is still live: a Saudi wall-art brand answered customers on whether Ramadan décor is permissible in March 2026 81.

Practice contradicts the rulings. Retailers openly sell horses, camels and 'feminine features' boards of female faces beside Islamic calligraphy (September 2026) 8884; a Riyadh villa foyer holds a large grey portrait of a woman by Safwan Dahoul (2025) 123; another hangs faceless fashion figures by Ethar Balkhair (2025) 126; and the auction record for a Saudi artist is Binzagr's figurative street scene at US$2.06 million (January 2026) 4316100. ATHR's Mohammed Hafiz says Saudi artists use coded, symbolic imagery to stay respectful of local values (October 2025) 102.

The firm lines are narrower. Nudity stays outside the commercial mainstream: Saudi art students drew from a nude mannequin for the first time only in 2015, and no source shows nudes for sale in the Kingdom 103; the Botero chosen for Sotheby's first Saudi sale was 'fully wrapped', which a journalist read as attuned to local norms (January 2025) 341. The flag carries the shahada and is not normally printed on merchandise; its use on footballs drew official protest 97. Religious themes are preferred through architecture, textiles and calligraphy rather than depictions of worship, as at Jeddah's Zarabi show (May 2026) 105, and sexualised female imagery is an inappropriate gift 89. Inference: a canvas reproducing the flag, treating Qur'anic text as pattern, or mis-rendering Arabic letterforms would read as naive or offensive 97. When a room's audience is unknown, Landscape, Geometric and Floral cuts are the safe brief, with figurative work offered on request for private rooms 77.

Do tastes differ by generation and by city?

Younger buyers want Saudi and regional artists with a story; Riyadh reads Najdi, Jeddah reads Hijazi and coastal, and the Eastern Province is testing maximalism. 30% of participants at Sotheby's first Saudi sale (February 2025) were under 40, and most contemporary lots went to local bidders 3; Christie's says 58% of its new Middle East buyers are millennials or younger, and Saudi buyer numbers rose 150% in five years (April 2025) 342. Nour Kelani says her millennial clients are buying houses and start with what is close to home — Saudi artists — before international names 123338. Older collectors focus on Persian carpets, Islamic antiquities or art (2025) 28, and Islamic art and artefacts remain a major collector interest 324.

The mass-affluent household is more cautious than the auction room suggests. Critic Hanaa Al-Shibli wrote in June 2025 that a painting at home is often viewed as decoration only, and that 'small painting' shows — works under 50 cm at no more than SAR 1,500 — are the entry route to owning originals 26; Atelier Jeddah's 'A Painting in Every Home' reached its 18th edition in December 2025 with prices capped at SAR 300–2,000 25. The contradiction between the two is real, and both are cited here 26342.

By city: the Najdi triangle is Riyadh's emblem (2026) 349, and Diriyah's hotels brief cream, sand and Najdi geometry with local art (2025) 345. Jeddah's register is coral stone, roshan and stained glass 350, its private collecting culture is older, with 'A Painting in Every Home' in its 16th year by 2024 343, and its hotels lean blue and beige 214. In Al Khobar, Mashhoor AlNassar opened a maximalist concept gallery of layered texture, form and colour in late 2025, arguing that the Eastern Province lets new concepts flourish (June 2026) 348. Designer-owned Riyadh homes mix Vietnamese, Spanish and Italian paintings with Saudi sculpture (2026) 125, or Japanese screens with auction finds (2026) 107; Prince Sultan bin Fahad's collection is mostly Saudi and regional but sits among Islamic, Gothic and modern pieces (2021) 339. Inference: there is no single 'Arabian' register; the neutral base is shared, and the accent register — jewel tones, coastal blues, maximalist layering — is personal.

Questions buyers in Saudi Arabia ask

Are paintings of horses and camels acceptable in Saudi homes?
It depends on the household. Saudi rulings forbid hanging pictures of animals 78, yet Saudi retailers list Arabian horses and pop-art camels as majlis and gallery subjects (2024–2026) 84296106. Offer animal work for private rooms on request and keep landscape, geometric or abstract work as the default for a formal majlis 77.
Which colours work in a Saudi majlis?
An earthy base of beige, sand and light brown, recommended by two Saudi retailers (2024–2025) 8384, is the documented default; Eva Interiors' Hittin villa adds terracotta and gold accents (2025) 124. An art-led majlis can go the other way, with jewel tones and gestural paintings on a calm beige-and-grey base (2026) 111.
Do Saudi buyers prefer textured paintings over flat ones?
Sources point that way. Christie's Nour Kelani says Saudi buyers 'don't want another poster' (2025) 338, and the rooms carry carved plaster ceilings, cast-gypsum feature walls and gilded pilasters (2018–2026) 16212490. Inference: textured and plaster-like canvases sit more comfortably beside that relief than thin, flat work.
Is Arabic calligraphy expected on the wall?
It is the most common subject in Saudi retail: calligraphy with gold or silver accents leads majlis guides and store catalogues (2025–2026) 84296, and hanging Qur'anic verses is explicitly permitted 77. The iHomeArt catalogue's ten themes do not include calligraphy, so that piece is best sourced from a Saudi calligrapher and paired with landscape or abstraction.
How does Riyadh taste differ from Jeddah?
Riyadh's heritage motif is the Najdi triangle, now an unofficial regional emblem (2026) 349, and its formal villas run sand, cream, terracotta and gold (2025) 124. Jeddah's register is Hijazi coral stone, roshan lattice and stained glass (2025) 350, its hotels lean blue and beige (2022) 214, and its private collecting culture is older 343.
Can figurative or portrait paintings be sold in Saudi Arabia?
Yes, with limits. A Riyadh villa foyer hangs a large portrait of a woman (2025) 123, and the Saudi auction record is a figurative street scene at US$2.06 million (January 2026) 4316. Nudity remains outside the mainstream: no source shows nudes for sale, and Sotheby's chose a fully clothed Botero for its first Saudi sale (2025) 103341.
Can a painting's palette be adapted to a Saudi scheme?
Saudi designers set a neutral base first — beige, grey, sand — and choose art to carry the colour (2026) 111, so palette matters more than subject in most briefs. iHomeArt works are painted to order, palette changes and variations are possible, and progress photos allow stage-by-stage approval before the piece ships.
