What size of painting do Bahraini walls need? Sizes, formats and hanging heights, room by room

For the rooms a Bahraini household shows to guests, plan on a painting 200–300 cm (79–118 in) wide; for a bed-head, an apartment wall or a hotel room, 100–200 cm (39–79 in); for a bank lobby or hotel public space, 250 cm (98 in) and up. The ranges follow from the rooms: the 2020 building code lets a private villa rise three storeys in 15 m and places an external majlis up to 4 m high on the street boundary 90, Gulf majlis guidance plans 9 × 11 m for 24 guests under a ceiling of at least 4.2 m 103, and the home chains' only stock at that scale in September 2026 was a 137 × 297 cm factory canvas at Homes r Us 136168. No Bahraini source publishes a recommended artwork size; every range here is our reading of the evidence, with the reasoning shown.

How do you size a painting for a Bahraini wall?

Measure the free wall, the ceiling and the distance to the seat opposite, and let the viewing distance set the width. Bahrain's code fixes envelopes, not ceilings: three storeys in 15 m averages 5 m floor-to-floor, which leaves room for 3.5–4 m ground-floor ceilings — derived, not stated 90; designer guidance puts a premium majlis at 3.5–4.5 m 102. Walls are long because houses are: Riffa Views sells 472 m² villas and 715–852 m² Signature villas with two living rooms and two dining rooms 91, and full-height glazing, as in the most-watched villa tour on one Bahraini agent's channel (January 2023), leaves fewer but larger solid walls 127. Our working rule, an inference from those distances: read from 7–11 m across a majlis, a painting needs 200–300 cm of width 103; read from 3–5 m across a table, 150–200 cm; read at arm's length in a corridor, 40–70 cm.

How wide should the painting on the majlis wall be?

200–300 cm (79–118 in) wide as one panoramic canvas or a matched triptych, 100–140 cm (39–55 in) tall, lower edge 30–40 cm above the sofa backs — or centred at about 120–130 cm on a floor-seated majlis. Bahraini planning allows an external majlis up to 4 m high from pavement level, which implies an internal ceiling of roughly 3.2–3.5 m 90. The February 2026 Gulf majlis guide plans 9 × 11 m for 24 guests under a ceiling of at least 4.2 m; the host wall faces the entrance, is read from 7–11 m by arriving guests and obliquely from the side sofas, and the ceiling leaves about 2.5 m of wall above seat height 103. Width and clearance are derived from that guide, not measured in Bahrain. Floor sofas sit only 30–46 cm high 104, the reason to hang lower on floor seating. Older Riffa villas pack two to four majlis into one house 93, and a furnished villa advertised in November 2025 lists a separate majlis, a ladies' living area and a family lounge 129, so the size recurs across a house. Gulf guidance uses a monochrome majlis palette to carry one statement piece 62, which favours textured, non-figurative work at this width.

Formal reception, family lounge and dining rooms

Formal reception 180–250 cm (71–98 in), or a 300 cm (118 in) panoramic on an uninterrupted wall; family lounge and ladies' sitting room 150–200 cm (59–79 in); dining wall 150–200 cm, or a 120–150 cm (47–59 in) square. A 472 m² Riffa Views villa over two floors gives roughly 236 m² a floor; with a formal living room of 45–60 m² the principal walls run about 7–9 m, so 180–250 cm in one canvas or a 300 cm panoramic fills the sofa wall without crowding — derived, with room proportions assumed 91. Durrat Al Bahrain villas pair a large open-plan reception with a separate family room and dining area 94, and the Amwaj villa toured by Houzz hangs its wall art in the formal lounge under a minimal-decoration brief 125. The family lounge faces a screen rather than the far wall, so one step down in size is enough; dining guests sit 3–5 m from the long wall, where 150–200 cm reads at close range (inferences).

Which format suits the stair void and the duplex penthouse?

A vertical work 200–254 cm (79–100 in) tall and 90–130 cm (35–51 in) wide, or two or three stacked panels, centred at eye level from the half-landing. The stair is the tallest wall in a three-storey villa, and in Manama's towers the void moves indoors: Manama listings run from 350 m² duplex penthouses at Abraj Al Lulu to a 454 m² penthouse at Bahrain Financial Harbour 101, and Onyx Bahrain Bay penthouses run 220–850 m² across duplex and three-floor layouts 100. Two floors of about 3 m give a stair wall of roughly 6 m for a 200–254 cm vertical canvas, whereas 220 m² single-level layouts have around 3 m of wall and take 150–200 cm horizontals — derived from the listings, since no Bahraini ceiling height is published 101. A single tall canvas reads best from the door; equal stacked panels read from every landing (inference).

Master suites, corridors and apartments in Bahrain Bay, Amwaj and Dilmunia

Bed-head wall 150–200 cm (59–79 in), 20–30 cm above the headboard; apartment living wall 120–180 cm (47–71 in); corridor three to five verticals of 40–70 cm (16–28 in). Five en-suite bedrooms with dressing areas are the Riffa Views Signature specification 91, so wardrobe runs break the side walls and the bed-head is the one continuous surface (inference). Apartments are the fastest-growing luxury segment at 7.65% CAGR to 2031 89, and their walls are shorter: the 1,937 sq ft Bahrain Bay apartment published in July 2026 carries a single black work on a 'gallery-like' living-room wall 78, and September 2026 luxury listings include 86–91 m² one-bedrooms in Dilmunia and Bahrain Bay 165, where the living wall is 4–5 m at most and 120–150 cm is the largest work that sits comfortably (inference). Danube Home and IKEA Bahrain stock up to 122.5 cm and 140 cm 135137, so this is the one tier where off-the-shelf sizes are plentiful; a made-to-order 150–180 cm original is the step above.

Bank lobbies, boardrooms and hotel rooms

Corporate lobby 250–400 cm (98–157 in); boardroom 200–250 cm (79–98 in); hotel guest room 100–150 cm (39–59 in); suite 150–250 cm (59–98 in); hotel lobby and ballroom 300 cm (118 in) and up. Bahrain's documented institutional commissions are architectural: Bank ABC's forecourt sculpture is 5.4 m tall 34, the airport's glass installations total 125 m² 36 and its 'Concordia' stained glass measures 34 by 17 m 35; beside those, a 150 cm canvas in a Financial Harbour lobby registers as an accessory (inference). Four Seasons Bahrain Bay holds 35,222 sq ft of event space including a 9,935 sq ft ballroom 39. The pipeline is the other scale: Hilton Bahrain City Centre opened with 594 kitchen-equipped units 108 and Kempinski Bahrain Harbour pairs 74 rooms with 186 residences 110, so most hotel art here is a repeatable 100–150 cm bed-head set rather than a lobby statement 110.

When should you go over 2 metres?

Whenever the wall is 6 m or longer and the ceiling 3.5 m or higher — in Bahrain, the majlis, the formal reception of a villa above about 470 m², the duplex stair, and every bank lobby and hotel public space. A majlis host wall is read from 7–11 m 103, and a 715–852 m² Signature villa gives 8–10 m of reception wall, derived from its area 91. Below 2 m the local market is served; above it, the choice is one factory piece or a private commission. The largest canvases listed by an established Bahraini painter are 180 × 140 cm at USD 16,000–17,000 asking, and no Bahraini artist or gallery publishes commission rates for a 2 m canvas 2; the largest work on National Arts is 172 × 92 cm at BHD 2,200 5; the chains' one piece above 180 cm is a 297 cm factory canvas labelled 'hand painting' 168; an Arabic search for large majlis canvases returns Saudi print-on-demand stores 123. That is the gap iHomeArt's catalogue is built for: sizes listed to 254 cm, every work paintable larger, 106 panoramic works — our catalogue facts, not a Bahraini norm. Keep the painting to about two-thirds of the sofa run beneath it and leave 40–60 cm of wall clear either side of that run: on an 8 m wall with a 4.5–5 m sofa that is a painting of 300–350 cm. Under a 3.2–3.5 m majlis-annex ceiling keep the height to 120–140 cm 90103.

Which finish and frame suit the Bahraini climate and interiors?

Choose rolled or stretched by access, not size: a stretched 250 cm canvas has to pass the villa stair or the tower lift, a rolled one is finished in Manama. Brass, gold or champagne frames for classical rooms, black, white or natural wood for the grey-and-white lounge; plan the lighting before the painting arrives. The evidence holds no measurement of indoor humidity in Bahraini homes, so the climate advice is practice, not data: designers specify light stone floors for cooling and treat brass and oak as standard finishes 142. Keep canvases off exterior walls that carry the afternoon sun and away from supply-air grilles. Two framers finish a rolled canvas locally: Fakhrawi Frames, trading since 1948 from a workshop in Mahooz, offers same-day framing on quotation 31; Bahrain Artistic Frames Centre, established 1987, stretches canvas at three branches 32. Gold, silver and bronze leaf and resin gloss recur in Jamal Abdul Rahim's oils 144, relief in Rashid Al Khalifa's wall works 146, and brass, bronze and oak in the finishes designers specify 142 — a market receptive to textured and metallic canvases. iHomeArt finishes: rolled, stretched, or framed in gold, silver, black, white or wood.

Questions buyers in Bahrain ask

What is the right painting size for a Bahraini majlis?
One panoramic canvas or a triptych 200–300 cm (79–118 in) wide and 100–140 cm tall, hung 30–40 cm above the sofa backs. A 2026 Gulf majlis guide plans 9 × 11 m for 24 guests under a 4.2 m ceiling, host wall read from 7–11 m 103; the sizes are derived, not measured in Bahrain.
How high should a painting hang above majlis seating?
On sofas, lower edge 30–40 cm above the back, which under a 4.2 m ceiling leaves about 2.5 m of wall 103. On a floor-seated majlis with sofas 30–46 cm high, centre the work at about 120–130 cm so seated guests look at it, not up at it 104.
Which format suits the stair void of a duplex penthouse?
A vertical work 200–254 cm (79–100 in) tall and 90–130 cm (35–51 in) wide, or two or three stacked panels, centred at eye level from the half-landing. Two floors of about 3 m give roughly 6 m of wall, derived from 'duplex' in Manama listings of 350 m² penthouses at Abraj Al Lulu 101 and Onyx Bahrain Bay's 220–850 m² layouts 100; no Bahraini ceiling height is published.
What size suits a Bahrain Bay, Amwaj or Dilmunia apartment?
120–180 cm (47–71 in) on the living wall. Listed luxury one-bedrooms run 86–91 m² 165, and a 1,937 sq ft Bahrain Bay apartment published in July 2026 carries a single work on its living-room wall 78; 350 m² duplex penthouses take a 200–254 cm vertical at the stair instead 101.
Should a large canvas arrive stretched or rolled?
Decide by access, not size. Stretched or framed arrives ready to hang; a 300 cm panoramic that will not turn a villa stair or fit a tower lift ships rolled and is stretched in Manama by Fakhrawi Frames or Bahrain Artistic Frames Centre on quotation 3132. iHomeArt supplies rolled, stretched or framed in gold, silver, black, white or wood.
Do panoramic formats suit Bahraini rooms?
Yes, for the majlis host wall and the formal reception, where the wall runs 7–10 m and is read from across the room 10391. A 300 cm panoramic at 100–120 cm tall fills such a wall without reaching the cornice of a 3.2–3.5 m majlis annex 90; 106 catalogue works are painted in that format.
