Offices and institutions in Bahrain: who commissions art, and what the walls need

Bahrain's documented institutional art buyers are a short list, the airport authority, the hotel flags and one bank, and what they commission is built at architectural scale: Bank ABC's 5.4 m sculpture for its Diplomatic Area headquarters, and 125 m² of glass art plus paintings by 15 Bahraini artists in the 2021 airport terminal 343536. No source found in this research records an art purchase by a Bahraini law firm, clinic or university, and none of the twelve Bahrain fit-out studios read lists art as a service, so the office wall is filled by the lead designer or an outside consultant 3578. This page sets out who buys, what each wall needs, and what a procurement file should contain.

Who in Bahrain commissions art for offices and institutions?

The sources answer: the airport, the hotel flags and one bank, at building scale; every other institution is undocumented, a finding about the sources rather than proof that others do not buy 35.

Banks. Bank ABC commissioned Nigerian-American artist Victor Ekpuk's 5.4 m abstract sculpture 'The Face' for the outside of its renovated headquarters in Manama's Diplomatic Area; it was fabricated in Bahrain within five weeks and unveiled at the soft launch of the bank's digital brand ila in December 2019 34. Group chief executive Khaled Kawan called it a piece that 'cleverly connects our heritage and future aspirations' 34. No source on the collections of NBB, BBK, Ahli United Bank or Bahrain Islamic Bank surfaced 35.

Government and public bodies. The largest documented programme is the USD 1.1 billion passenger terminal at Bahrain International Airport, opened in January 2021, which describes itself as 'a cultural platform' and carries 10 sculptures by Bahraini sculptors, paintings by 15 Bahraini artists 'ranging from abstract to realism', two glass paintings on Bahraini heritage and Sir Brian Clarke's stained-glass 'Concordia', which the airport puts at 34 m by 17 m 35. Two glass installations by Andrew Moor with Bahraini artists total 125 m² over the central hub, and the sculptures were produced with Hend Gallery 36. In October 2024 the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities hung 14 Bahraini painters, among them Balqees Fakhro and Abbas Al Mosawi, on installation panels along the concourses of Exhibition World Bahrain, 'landscapes and abstract compositions' 147. The state is also the scene's chief patron: Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa has chaired the National Council for Arts since 2021 146.

Hotels. Four Seasons Bahrain Bay states that its interiors are 'enhanced by a specially curated collection of Bahraini art', and UK consultancy Artelier commissioned the collection at Raffles Al Areen Palace, including four gold-leaf calligraphic spears 3941. The hospitality page covers that set.

Professional firms, clinics, universities. None documented. Corporate work with local artists exists: Leena Al Ayoobi, founder of Dar Alfann Gallery, has produced collaborations for Starbucks, GA Aviation and Montblanc 54. But the fit-out trade that would specify office art does not mention it: Yellow Bricks markets to 'an office in Financial Harbour', Erwin Ereno Design Studio was an SBID 2023 Workplace Fit Out finalist, Kooheji Interiors lists furniture procurement from 'over 1,500 prequalified suppliers worldwide', and none of the 12 Bahrain studio and contractor sites read for this research names art or art sourcing as a service 86737078. Which suggests the office painting is bought ad hoc by the designer, the client's own office or a foreign consultant: Artelier lists 'an art installation for an office lobby in Manama', and Dubai's Art Painting Lab says it has served the GCC including Bahrain since 2015, without showing a Bahrain project 4243.

How big are Bahrain's corporate spaces, and what scale does each wall need?

No Bahraini source publishes office floor-to-ceiling heights, so the guidance below is derived from the buildings the sources describe and from iHomeArt's sizing practice, and is marked as such.

Lobby and reception. Bahrain Financial Harbour's twin Harbour Towers are 260 m over 53 floors, an average of 4.9 m per floor including podium and plant, a derived figure that says only that the volumes are tall 105. The documented lobby commissions are all larger than any canvas: 5.4 m at Bank ABC, 125 m² of glass over the airport's central hub, 34 × 17 m of stained glass 343635. For the wall behind a reception desk the working scale is a single canvas of 200–254 cm on the long side, or a matched pair, and every catalogue work can be painted larger than its listed sizes; that is iHomeArt's guidance, not a Bahraini norm.

Boardroom. Four Seasons Bahrain Bay's two boardrooms and four meeting rooms are the only counted boardroom stock in the sources 39. A boardroom painting faces the chair along the table, so a horizontal or panoramic work of 180–230 cm on the end wall reads from the far seat, and 120–150 cm works suit the side walls. Designer Mohamed Alqari's Bahrain Bay residence, published in July 2026, keeps circulation 'clean and gallery-like' so that artwork becomes the focal point, the same logic as an end wall 78.

Corridors and open-plan floors. Exhibition World Bahrain hung 14 painters on panels along its concourses, the local model for a corridor series: several works at one size, in one register, read in sequence 147. On open-plan floors, where desks and screens cut the wall, a series of 100–150 cm works in one palette carries better than a single large piece; most catalogue works are listed in 14 sizes from 61 × 51 cm to 203 × 153 cm, so one reference can be ordered at several sizes.

Executive floors and waiting areas. The airport's Pearl Lounge carries works 'commissioned specially for the airport', separate from the concourse programme, the pattern for an executive floor: fewer works with more presence, 150–200 cm, in a calmer register than the lobby 36. A waiting area outside a boardroom takes a single 120–180 cm work; the catalogue tags nine moods, and Calming is the filter to use.

What do Bahraini institutions actually hang?

Abstract, landscape and textured work is what the state and its institutions have chosen to show; figurative work is exhibited openly; calligraphy is a religious object first and a design element second.

The airport's 15 painters range 'from abstract to realism', the 2024 Exhibition World display was 'landscapes and abstract compositions', and the airport's heritage subjects are handled in glass rather than on canvas 3514736. Bahrain's painters supply the register: Balqees Fakhro moved from figurative townscapes to large abstract canvases in muted colours and textures that evoke 'weathered walls of long-forgotten places', Jamal Abdul Rahim showed oils with gold, silver and bronze leaf and resin surfaces at ArtBAB 2019, and Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa's work moved from desert and sea landscapes to geometric abstraction and colour-field painting 56144146. Albareh in Adliya lists 20 gallery artists, eight of them Bahraini, the rest from across the Arab world 149. The cuts below follow that order: textured sand-and-gold plaster, Gulf-blue abstraction, geometric gold, seascape and grey-white minimalism.

Figurative subjects. A 2003 Sunni ruling on IslamWeb, a Qatar-based site, prohibits hanging depictions of living beings, while Bahrain's state-honoured canon is figurative: Almosawi has shown his souk and seafront scenes in hotels and banks since a first exhibition at the Sheraton Manama in 1977, and Ahmed Anan, president of the Bahrain Contemporary Art Society 2018–2020, centres his work on 'the woman as an icon and muse' 585554. Which suggests figurative and animal subjects are unremarkable in a Bahraini office, while a landscape, seascape, botanical or abstract brief avoids the question where staff and visitors are unknown; an inference, not a survey finding 58.

Calligraphy. Scholars differ on Quranic verses on walls: IslamWeb fatwa 272674 of November 2014 records Ibn Baz permitting them 'in gatherings and offices for reminder and benefit' if not used as talismans, and Ibn Uthaymeen opposing the practice as an innovation that becomes mere decoration 59. Busaad, Albareh and Mashq all list Arabic calligraphy among their offer 57. Our inference: an institution that wants script commissions it from a Bahraini calligrapher, and a supplier abroad should leave verses alone rather than offer them as decor 5957.

What does a corporate buyer in Bahrain need from a supplier?

A Bahraini corporate buyer procures through a turnkey fit-out contractor, pays by bank transfer, and works under a returns culture built on conformity to specification; the supplier's file has to fit that.

Procurement runs through the fit-out. Kooheji Interiors offers space planning, construction drawings, project management and furniture procurement; United International Décor works on a turnkey 'one stop shop' basis for commercial fit-out across Bahrain and the GCC; TTC Contracting and Sumworks list corporate offices among their sectors 70718384. Which suggests the painting enters the project as a procurement line: a specification sheet, a delivery date tied to handover, one invoice. iHomeArt quotes within one business day, does not publish prices, takes a minimum order of one piece and prices by volume from 10.

Specification and conformity. Bahrain's Consumer Protection Law No. 35 of 2012 obliges a supplier to replace or refund goods that 'do not conform to the approved specifications', secondary sources give a 15-day window for defects, and Homes R Us, a mainstream retailer, excludes custom-made products from returns altogether 242325. For a made-to-order canvas the approved specification is therefore the contract: size in cm, orientation, palette, finish, reference image. iHomeArt sends progress photos or video with stage-by-stage approval, so the approval trail exists before the crate is sealed, and every piece ships signed by the artist with a certificate of authenticity for the asset register.

Timing and staged delivery. Bank ABC's five-week fabrication was set by a launch date 34. iHomeArt's cycle is about one week to paint plus 3–7 days in transit, 10–13 days door to door, with free insured shipping by DHL, FedEx or USPS. DHL Express delivers door to door to business addresses in Manama, Riffa and Muharraq with signature on delivery, up to 70 kg per piece by courier collection and larger items by phone booking, and its Middle East air network is hubbed at Bahrain International Airport 2829. A headquarters floor can therefore be phased: lobby works first, executive and open-plan series in later crates.

Finish and hanging. Works ship rolled, stretched or framed in gold, silver, black, white or wood. Manama can finish locally: Fakhrawi Frames, trading since 1948 with a workshop in Mahooz, offers same-day framing, hanging systems and quotes on request, and Bahrain Artistic Frames Centre, established 1987, runs three branches 3132.

Payment. Bahrain's national transfer system handled 494 million transactions worth BHD 37.5 billion in 2025, and BENEFIT launched a BenefitPay Business Account for commercial registrations that year; a deposit and balance by transfer is the everyday method 21.

Questions buyers in Bahrain ask

Which Bahraini institutions have actually commissioned art?
Bank ABC commissioned a 5.4 m sculpture for its Diplomatic Area headquarters in 2019; the airport's 2021 terminal carries 10 sculptures, paintings by 15 Bahraini artists and 125 m² of glass art; Exhibition World Bahrain hung 14 painters along its concourses in 2024. No law firm, clinic or university purchase was found 343536147.
Is there a Bahrain-based corporate art consultancy?
None surfaced in this research. The documented consultants are foreign: UK-based Artelier lists a Manama office-lobby installation and a five-star hotel consultancy, and Dubai's Art Painting Lab says it serves the GCC including Bahrain, while none of the 12 Bahrain fit-out studios read lists an art service 424378.
What size should a reception-wall painting be in a Manama tower?
No Bahraini source publishes office ceiling heights, and the documented lobby pieces are architectural: 5.4 m at Bank ABC, 125 m² of glass at the airport. Our guidance is 200–254 cm on the long side, or a matched pair, for the wall behind reception; every catalogue work can be painted larger 3436.
Can we hang Quranic verses in the office?
Scholars differ. IslamWeb fatwa 272674 of 2014 records Ibn Baz permitting verses in offices 'for reminder and benefit' and Ibn Uthaymeen opposing them as decoration. Busaad, Albareh and Mashq all offer calligraphy, so commission it from a Bahraini calligrapher rather than importing script as decor 5957.
Are figurative or animal subjects a problem in a Bahraini office?
Not in the documented record. Abbas Almosawi's souk and seafront scenes have shown in banks and hotels since 1977, the airport's painters range 'from abstract to realism', and the 2003 ruling against images is from a Qatar-based site, not a Bahraini body. Abstract, landscape and seascape briefs sidestep the question where audiences are unknown 553558.
Can a headquarters floor be delivered in phases?
Yes. Bank ABC's commission was fabricated in five weeks to a launch date 34. iHomeArt's cycle is about one week to paint plus 3–7 days in transit, 10–13 days door to door, with free insured shipping; DHL Express takes pieces up to 70 kg by courier collection and larger items by phone booking, delivering to Manama business addresses with signature 28. Lobby works can ship first, executive and open-plan series in later crates.
What should the purchase file contain?
Under Consumer Protection Law No. 35 of 2012 the remedy is replacement or refund of goods that do not conform to approved specifications, so keep the signed specification (size in cm, palette, finish), the approved progress photos, the artist-signed certificate of authenticity and DHL's signature on delivery 2428.
