What art is for sale in Bahrain, and what does it cost?

Abstraction, heritage figuration and calligraphy, sold by enquiry at about 15 galleries and at BHD 45–2,200 on the one local marketplace with public prices ⁴⁹¹⁶⁶⁴. The two anchor galleries, Albareh Art Space and Al Riwaq, opened in Manama in 1998 ⁴⁹. Albareh (Adliya) sells Middle Eastern painting, sculpture and calligraphy from 20 gallery artists, eight of them Bahraini, with no published price list ⁵⁷¹⁴⁹; Al Riwaq is a non-profit whose 2026 programme is workshops, not sales shows ¹⁵⁰. Other named venues are La Fontaine (2002), Busaad (2014, non-profit), Mashq (2015), Nadine (2007, online), 56 Art Gallery (reopened 2023 for first-time collectors) and Hend Gallery in Muharraq (100-plus artists, no public prices); the two RAK venues are private collections ^57139151.

What sells: expressionism, surrealism and calligraphic art are described as the popular forms, with abstract expressionism gaining ground ⁴⁹. At ArtBAB 2018 and 2019 Balqees Fakhro showed abstractions in a typical Bahraini palette, Jamal Abdul Rahim oils with gold, silver and bronze leaf and resin surfaces, and Faika Al Hassan canvases of small human figures ⁵⁰¹⁴⁴. Sea, dhows and Muharraq heritage recur in Rahim’s listing (nine banoush boat oils at USD 8,000–13,000) ¹; on National Arts the BHD 1,000–2,200 top of the ladder is horses, falcons and traditional games, while florals and small abstracts fill BHD 45–150 ⁶⁴.

Prices: Rahim lists 100 × 100 cm abstracts at USD 10,000, 130 × 160 cm at USD 13,000 and 180 × 140 cm figurative works at USD 16,000–17,000 (asking prices, 12 September 2026) ¹². A reviewer at ArtBAB 2018 found prices “still in the affordable spectrum, as the market is quite local”, and the fair reported first-year sales above BHD 200,000 ⁵⁰⁵¹. No Bahraini artist or gallery with published commission rates for a 2 m canvas was found ².

Printed and factory-labelled “handpainted” canvases from BHD 2.90 to BHD 184.500, reaching 297 cm at one chain, on the pages read on 12 September 2026 ^137135136168. IKEA Bahrain lists 38 ready-to-hang pictures, its largest single canvas 140 × 56 cm at BHD 15 ¹⁷¹³⁷. Danube Home labels nine of its 15 canvases “Handpainted” or “Oil Painting”, all 80 × 120 cm or smaller at BHD 18–29; nothing on the page exceeds 122.5 cm ¹³⁵. Homes r Us lists 485 framed artworks; sorted by price, the top is the 137 × 297 cm 'Curved Way 3D Canvas Hand Painting', a framed acrylic made in China at BHD 129.150 (regular BHD 184.500), followed by 165–183 cm framed canvases at BHD 46–57, and every item seen was 30% off on the day read, which suggests the markdown is permanent ¹³⁶¹⁶⁸. Home Centre’s pages could not be read; a search snippet says its range includes hand-painted pieces ¹³⁸¹⁸.

Only the 297 cm Homes r Us piece reaches the 180–300 cm the sizing page derives for a 7–9 m villa reception wall or a majlis host wall read from about 10 m; the rest of the chain offer is sized for bedrooms and corridors (inference from stocked sizes) ^13616891103.

Two framers, trading since 1948 and 1987, who quote rather than publish prices; Arabic-language Instagram accounts selling printed canvas by message; and international platforms that carry almost no Bahrain-based painters ^313212115. Fakhrawi Frames (Mahooz, Manama) describes itself as Bahrain’s first bespoke picture framer and fine-art printer and offers same-day framing and hanging systems ³¹; Bahrain Artistic Frames Centre runs three branches and promotes canvas stretching ³². Neither publishes BHD prices, but a work delivered rolled can be stretched and framed locally (inference from their services) ³¹³².

Online, the Arabic-language canvas market a Bahraini buyer sees is printed: the largest seller account surfaced, @lo7atcanvas (Bahraini contact number, about 226K followers in September 2026), and @ee6ar (about 24K) sell by Instagram message, and an Arabic search for large majlis canvases in Bahrain returns mostly Saudi print-on-demand stores such as canvas.sa ^121122123. Bahrain-themed art on Amazon and Etsy is small-format print, 20 × 30 cm up to 91 × 51 cm ¹³⁴¹⁴¹. The originals platforms are thin: ArtMajeur lists five Manama-based painters without prices and Singulart three Bahraini painters ¹⁵¹⁴⁰. Bahraini artists who take private commissions, such as Zainab Noor, do so through Instagram ⁵⁴.

Imports come through the cross-border platforms where home goods rank third by category (2024) and through Dubai: in 2015 The National reported that many Bahraini buyers travel there to buy art, and a 2017 Amwaj villa tour had décor “handpicked from shops across Bahrain and Dubai” ^20143124. No Bahrain review site or forum on wall-art quality was found; the visible issues are “handpainted” labels on canvases priced like prints and permanent-looking markdowns ¹³⁵¹³⁶. Returns practice is defect-based: Consumer Protection Law No. 35 of 2012 requires replacement or refund of goods that do not conform to the agreed specification, secondary sources cite a 15-day window, and Homes r Us excludes custom-made items from its 14-day returns ²⁴²³²⁵.

About BHD 15–45 per m² at the chains, BHD 1,400–3,700 per m² for local originals on the marketplace, USD 6,300–10,000 per m² (≈BHD 2,400–3,800) for an established Bahraini painter, and roughly USD 75,000–100,000 per m² at auction estimate for a 1970s modernist ^1365719. Per-m² figures are arithmetic from listed size and price at the fixed peg of BHD 1 = USD 2.659 ¹⁵⁵.

Small originals cost more per m² than large ones (BHD 3,650 at 24 × 40 cm against BHD 1,390 at 172 × 92 cm; Rahim from about USD 12,700 per m² at 90 × 70 cm to USD 6,300–6,750 at 180 × 140 cm), and the tiers do not meet: chain canvas to local original is a gap of roughly 30 to 250 times, with no published gallery price list between ⁷⁵¹²⁹.

Between roughly BHD 45 per m² factory canvas and BHD 1,400 per m² local originals, and above 180 cm, where the only stocked piece found is a factory 'hand painting' and no original by a named artist is priced ^5136168. The only published prices above 150 cm for a named artist are Rahim’s 180 × 140 cm oils at USD 16,000–17,000 ², the Arabic online canvas market is print-on-demand ¹²³, and a Bahrain-subject seascape painted at 150–250 cm is unserved on the mass marketplaces (inference) ¹³⁴. On the demand side, none of the twelve Bahrain design and fit-out studios read lists art sourcing as a service; the published examples are one designer mixing “prominent local and international artists” in a Bahrain Bay apartment and a London consultancy commissioning the collection at Raffles Al Areen, which suggests art is sourced ad hoc by the lead designer or an outside consultant ⁷⁸⁴¹⁴³.

The limits are three. “Handpainted” already labels BHD 18–29 factory canvases at Danube Home and a 297 cm framed piece at Homes r Us, so only signature, certificate and progress photos separate an original from décor ¹³⁵¹⁶⁸. The local canon prizes metallic leaf, relief texture, weathered-wall abstraction and maritime heritage, and what reads as foreign is imitation Arabic script or desert motifs on a pearling island, which points toward Textured & Plaster, Seascape and Abstract rather than lettering (inference) ^144566345. And the buyer pool is a niche: 1.59 million people, with roughly 69% of financial wealth held by households worth over USD 1 million (2020), so demand sits with tens of thousands of households at most (inference) ¹⁵⁵¹⁶¹.
