What art is for sale in Switzerland, and what does it cost?

Switzerland sells wall art in three tiers that rarely meet. Furniture chains stock printed canvas from about CHF 45 per m² and a few acrylics sold as hand-painted that stop at 150 × 118 cm for CHF 899 (IKEA and Pfister, read 18 September 2026) 141139. Studio painters price a two-metre canvas at CHF 3,000–20,000 depending on who paints it 321. Galleries price by artist rather than by area: one Adliswil gallery lists paintings from about CHF 800 to CHF 8,700 per m² side by side 5. This page sets out what each tier sells, at what size and price, and where a made-to-order original sits between them.

What do Swiss galleries and local artists sell, and what does it cost?

Gallery originals run from under CHF 100 to about CHF 28,000 in the Zürich area, a 140 × 140 cm canvas at Galerie Reitz costs CHF 8,000, and studio painters sell a 100 × 140 cm canvas for roughly CHF 1,200–2,500 51432. Galerie Reitz in Zürich listed Kejoo Park's 140 × 140 cm canvas at CHF 8,000, with CHF 28,000 the highest visible price on 18 September 2026 143. At kunstzürichsüd in Adliswil, a gallery of regional artists, painted originals ran from about CHF 80 to CHF 4,500, with Joel Brandenberger's 140 × 80 cm oil 'Wetterhorn & Schreckhorn' at CHF 2,400 and Lowell Sipes's 182 × 94 cm acrylic at CHF 1,395 (September 2026) 5. Divided by area that listing spans about CHF 800 to CHF 8,700 per m², which suggests artist and subject, not surface, set the price; its subjects mix Alpine peaks with marine scenes, cityscapes and abstracts 5. Zürich's youngart.ch shows nine artists and no prices at all 150. Outside Zürich the ladder is similar: Cairo Cornici in Lugano priced a 79 × 79 cm original at CHF 980, a 110 × 110 cm stencil on canvas at CHF 2,440 and a 100 × 100 cm canvas print at CHF 330 (19 September 2026) 179, and the Galerie des Annonciades in St-Ursanne sells secondary-market Swiss painting from about CHF 250 to CHF 6,500 6.

Commission painters publish the clearest size-to-price tables. Valentino Prizzi in Zürich quotes CHF 700–900 for 40 × 70 cm, about CHF 1,200–2,500 for 100 × 140 cm and CHF 5,000–8,500 for 240 × 140 cm, naming portraits, pop art, stencil work and collages as the jobs most asked for 2. A studio that invoices Swiss clients in CHF from German contact addresses lists CHF 990 for 40 × 50 cm and CHF 9,000–20,000 for 150 × 200 cm and above, with about 21 days' lead time in quick-drying media or 14–30 days in oil plus 3–5 business days for framing and shipping, against a 70% deposit 1. Lucerne painter Edmund Hanser sells abstract acrylics from CHF 350 (50 × 70 cm) to CHF 5,250 for 200 × 200 cm with free Swiss delivery and a certificate 128; Lea Sirwana Moser, selling through a Swiss site, shows a completed 220 × 100 cm commission at CHF 3,000 3; Zürich painter Kate Salinger, with over 370,000 Instagram followers by October 2025, sells single-brushstroke oils at CHF 3,000–6,000 by size and complexity 118.

The market is polarised. Art Basel 2026 brought 290 galleries and 90,000 visitors 146, Art Genève 2026 gathered 81 galleries at Palexpo 147, and the Swiss art market grew 13% in 2025 167. Yet BILANZ reported in June 2026 that small and mid-sized Swiss galleries face stagnant demand, quoting Zürich gallerist Peter Kilchmann that sales 'have collapsed since about last summer' 145, and the Solothurn Kunstsupermarkt, which sold originals at fixed prices of CHF 99 to 599, held its last edition to 12 January 2025 149.

What do Pfister, IKEA and Micasa sell, and how big does it go?

Printed canvas from CHF 34.95, canvases sold as 'handgemalt' from CHF 99.90, and a ceiling of 150 × 118 cm at CHF 899, all read on 18 September 2026 141137139. Pfister lists 368 canvas pictures online at CHF 12.45–739.95 from the Danish label Malerifabrikken and the brands Alldecor and EICIE, and a search for 'handgemalt' on its site returns 446 results 15139136. IKEA Switzerland's picture category is print only 141, and Micasa's range tops out at CHF 64.95 with no 'handgemalt' items 140.

Two things stand out. 'Handgemalt' is used loosely at Pfister: the Malerifabrikken 'Mix Painting' appears in its hand-painted search results although the product page describes a giclée print refined with textured paint details 136138. And the hand-painted tier is imported décor rather than Swiss painting: Malerifabrikken is Danish, the Alldecor stretcher wood comes from China, KUNSTLOFT is a German brand with CHF prices, and YS-Art states 'Made in Germany' behind its .ch storefront 13913714216. Above CHF 899 the chains checked stock nothing; KUNSTLOFT's XXL oils start at 'from' CHF 819–1,079 142. Manor and Galaxus were not read, so the ceiling is limited to the pages checked 139.

Who else supplies wall art: marketplaces, low-cost platforms, framers and rental

Marketplaces sell foreign originals with prices most Swiss galleries will not print, low-cost platforms sell the décor tier under a run of safety headlines, and a framing trade priced by the metre handles whatever arrives rolled 151192429. Singulart filters artists by nationality, Switzerland included, sorts works into bands from under USD 500 to over USD 20,000, includes delivery and gives 30-day returns 151. Saatchi Art's 'paintings from Switzerland' listing runs to 61 pages, where 'from Switzerland' means the artist's location, not the work's origin 11.

What Swiss buyers complain about at the low end is safety and honesty of description, not taste. Temu and Shein delivered an estimated 15 million parcels to Switzerland in 2024 19; SRF Kassensturz reported in April 2025 that 11 of 12 Temu electrical products failed EU safety standards 24, and Stiftung Warentest found 110 of 162 Temu and Shein items non-compliant, as 20 Minuten reported in November 2025 25. The inference for any imported painting is that 'hand-painted' needs proof, a named painter, a certificate and progress photos, because press coverage has attached a low-trust label to the platform tier and domestic retail has blurred the word 'handgemalt' 25136.

Framing is local and transparent. Atelier Hohl AG in Zürich-Oerlikon offers around 1,000 frame variants from aluminium to hand-gilded, plus hanging systems 30; a conservation framer in Zollikofen charges CHF 12 per running metre of stretcher bar including assembly and CHF 90 per hour for stretching, which puts a rolled 150 × 100 cm canvas at roughly CHF 150 on the wall, an inference from those rates 29. Two domestic routes serve businesses: Artrent in Zürich rents originals at roughly 20% of the purchase price per year, charges CHF 1 per km from Zürich and CHF 100 per hour for services, and credits rent against a later purchase 197; EDELSTOCK in Zwillikon hand-paints XXL minimal canvases to a client's size, colour, material and texture for hotels, offices and spas, but publishes no sizes or prices 199.

What does a square metre of wall art cost in Switzerland?

About CHF 45–80 per m² for printed canvas, CHF 300–620 per m² for retail canvases sold as 'handgemalt', CHF 1,300–6,700 per m² for a two-metre studio commission, and CHF 800–8,700 per m² at the galleries that publish sizes 14113915. The table divides each listed price by canvas area, the researcher's arithmetic on sellers' own prices read in September 2026.

Two readings follow. The gap between the print floor and gallery originals is roughly 10× to 100× per m², and between retail 'handgemalt' décor and a studio commission roughly 3× to 10×, an inference from the rows above rather than a market statistic 1411. And gallery pricing is not proportional to area: the same Adliswil gallery sells CHF 815 and CHF 8,680 per m² side by side 5, and finews.ch's worked example of the artist factor, a 60 × 50 cm painting at factor 2.5 costing CHF 7,500 with every work of that size priced the same (article undated, read Sept 2026), shows why large formats climb steeply once an artist has a key 144.

Where do made-to-order originals fit in Switzerland?

Between the chain ceiling of 150 × 118 cm at CHF 899 and the studio band of CHF 3,000–20,000 for a two-metre canvas, for buyers who want a specified size and palette rather than a named Swiss artist 13931. The evidence for the gap is consistent but bounded. Among the retailers checked nothing exceeds 2 m 141139; between CHF 899 and the studio tier the stocked options found were KUNSTLOFT's 'from' CHF 819–1,079 XXL oils and, at the bottom, the Kunstsupermarkt's CHF 99–599 originals until it closed in January 2025 142149. One Swiss studio, EDELSTOCK, does paint XXL canvases to a client's size and colour, so a domestic made-to-order route exists, though without published prices or lead times 199. Corporate collections buy by mandate rather than by wall: in 2010 Julius Baer bought 30–40 Swiss works a year with a CHF 20,000 cap per work, and Zürcher Kantonalbank bought only artists with a Zürich-region link 67, which suggests imported originals belong in residences, hospitality and offices without an art programme rather than in bank collections 67.

What iHomeArt can state is limited to its verified terms. The catalogue holds 1,455 original hand-painted canvas works, each painted to order in any size, with listed sizes up to 254 cm and every work available larger, palettes that can be changed, no prints and no stock. Painting takes about one week and transit 3–7 days, so 10–13 days door to door, against the roughly 21 to 30 days plus 3–5 business days for framing that a commission studio quotes Swiss clients 1. Shipping is free and insured by DHL, FedEx or USPS; every piece is signed by the artist with a certificate of authenticity; progress photos or video allow stage-by-stage approval; the minimum order is one piece with volume pricing from ten; finishes are rolled, stretched or framed in gold, silver, black, white or wood; quotes arrive within one business day. There are no public prices, a real friction where BILANZ describes first-time auction buyers, nearly half under 40, researching online and expecting price transparency 71. The platform tier has taught Swiss buyers to distrust unproven claims on imported goods 2425, so a Foshan original has to carry its proof, the named painter, the progress video and the certificate, or it will be read as the décor tier. The painters train inside Siji Art Hub's exhibition programme of 50 or more shows, but they are not Swiss artists, so the work does not answer the Swiss-artist mandates of the bank collections 67 or the competition-based Kunst-und-Bau commissions of the public sector, where Canton Zürich budgets 0.5–1% of the building sum (2016) 43.

Questions buyers in Switzerland ask

What does a two-metre hand-painted canvas cost from a Swiss studio?
Between CHF 3,000 and CHF 20,000 in the price lists read in September 2026: a completed 220 × 100 cm commission at CHF 3,000, a 200 × 200 cm abstract at CHF 5,250, 240 × 140 cm at CHF 5,000–8,500, and CHF 9,000–20,000 for 150 × 200 cm and above 312821.
Is a 'handgemalt' canvas at Pfister a real painting?
Sometimes. The Malerifabrikken 'Freja' at 150 × 118 cm for CHF 899 is described as a hand-painted acrylic unique piece, but the 'Mix Painting' at 60 × 80 cm for CHF 149 is a giclée print with hand-applied texture and still appears in Pfister's hand-painted search results (18 September 2026) 139138136.
What is the largest painting I can buy off the shelf in Switzerland?
Among the chains read on 18 September 2026, IKEA's nine-piece print set at 179 × 112 cm (CHF 89.95) and Pfister's painted canvas 'Freja' at 150 × 118 cm (CHF 899) were the largest; KUNSTLOFT's Swiss site filters sizes up to 200 cm at 'from' prices of CHF 819–1,079 for base sizes. Manor and Galaxus were not checked 141139142.
Do Swiss galleries publish prices?
Some do. Galerie Reitz in Zürich lists CHF 1,950 to CHF 28,000 with sizes, kunstzürichsüd in Adliswil lists paintings at about CHF 80–4,500 and Cairo Cornici in Lugano prices originals and prints; youngart.ch shows nine artists and no prices (September 2026) 1435179150.
What did the Kunstsupermarkt sell, and what replaced it?
About 7,000 originals a season at fixed prices of CHF 99, 199, 399 or 599; its 25th edition, to 12 January 2025, was the last 149. No equivalent fixed-price tier was found: the closest stocked options are Pfister's 150 × 118 cm original at CHF 899 and KUNSTLOFT's XXL oils 'from' CHF 819–1,079 (September 2026) 139142.
What does it cost to stretch a rolled canvas locally?
A conservation framer in Zollikofen prices stretcher bars at CHF 12 per running metre including assembly and stretching labour at CHF 90 per hour (2025), so a 150 × 100 cm canvas comes to roughly CHF 150, an inference from those rates; Atelier Hohl in Zürich-Oerlikon offers around 1,000 frame variants 2930.
