What art is for sale in the UK, and what does it cost?

The UK sold USD 10.5 billion of art in 2025, 18% of the world total and second only to the United States 1. What a buyer can actually put on a wall comes from three tiers with public prices. High-street chains sell printed and ‘hand painted’ canvases from £6 to £280 and nothing longer than 135 cm (19 September 2026) 144142. Marketplaces and UK studios sell originals from a £100 floor, with one published commission list putting a 200 × 100 cm abstract at £1,795 (September 2026) 14511. Above them sit galleries and fairs, where 55% of Affordable Art Fair sales in 2025 were under £500 and a 160 × 180 cm marketplace oil was listed at £14,000 65146. This page sets out what each tier sells, at what size and price, and where a made-to-order original from abroad sits against them.

What do UK galleries and local artists sell, and at what prices?

Originals under £500 carry the volume at the fairs, published commission lists from UK painters run from about £700 for 100 × 100 cm to £1,800 for 200 × 100 cm, and one 2026 buyer's guide estimates mid-career gallery oils at £4,000–£8,000 6511148. The Affordable Art Fair is the volume channel: its three London fairs drew nearly 60,000 visitors in 2025, the fair's own UK sales rose 16% year on year, 55% of sales were under £500 and 44% of Battersea Autumn visitors were first-timers 65. The Battersea Autumn 2026 edition (14–18 October) brings over 100 galleries, promotes a ‘Finds Under £500’ selection and uses a £680 painting as its campaign work 2. The one itemised sales audit found, of the 2018 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, had small paintings selling mostly under £500 and medium paintings nearly all at £750–£2,000, while most works over £10,000 stayed unsold except those by figurative and impressionist painters 5.

Regional galleries publish few prices. Fosse Gallery in Stow-on-the-Wold, selling since 1980, shows works at £550, £895 and £950 on its homepage (September 2026) 150; Contemporary Six in Hale, south of Manchester, lists painting prices on request 151; The Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh, founded 1842, shows none 152. A February 2026 guide on a gallery-directory site, an editorial estimate without a stated method, puts emerging UK originals at £300–£2,000, debut-artist oils at a London show at £800–£1,500, mid-career gallery oils at £4,000–£8,000 and regional galleries 20–30% below London 148.

Painters who publish commission grids give the clearest signal. Caroline Ashwood lists £699 for 100 × 100 cm, £1,695 for 180 × 120 cm and £1,795 for 200 × 100 cm, larger sizes on application, about 4 weeks, with no premium over stock work 11. Coppini Art (Portsmouth) quotes £1,000–£1,250 for 100 × 70 cm and £1,750+ for 120 × 100 cm, its largest listed size, framing and UK delivery included, 8–12 weeks, 50% deposit 12. Swarez (Gloucestershire) publishes no grid, sets no minimum size and takes a 20% deposit 13. CommissionIt's August 2026 guide puts large abstracts ‘from the high hundreds into several thousand pounds’, a non-binding range 14. Which suggests roughly £800–£1,500 per m² for a UK studio abstract at 1–2 m², though Coppini's figure includes framing and Ashwood's does not 1112. On Artfinder's rolling monthly best-seller chart, the higher-placed of two UK painters in the top ten, Ewa Czarniecka, prices a 97 × 112 cm oil at £2,500, about £2,300 per m² (19 September 2026) 98.

What do John Lewis, Dunelm and the decorative retailers sell, and how big does it go?

Printed, ‘hand-finished’ and a few ‘hand painted’ canvases from £6 to £280, nothing longer than 135 cm, and no country of origin stated on any page read (19 September 2026) 144142143. John Lewis's own-brand listing runs from £75 (a reduced price; £100 at full price) to £280; its ‘hand painted’ items sit at £150–£195 and nothing above about 1.4 m is listed 142. Dunelm's canvas category holds 311 items from £6 to £155, most cards without dimensions 144. Cox & Cox's 38-piece wall-art range (£45–£325) has two hand-painted canvases at £115 and £150 with no dimensions given 202.

The chains' ‘hand painted’ price points are consistent with mass-produced decorative canvases rather than UK studio work, an inference, since neither retailer states origin 143142. They also set the mid-market anchor: a Mumsnet thread of October 2023 asking what to hang at roughly 100 × 100 cm put the budget at ‘up to a couple of hundred pounds’ and named John Lewis and Dunelm as ‘usually good for big canvases at a reasonable price’ 129. The one stocked step between that ceiling and a studio commission is KunstLoft, a German-headquartered seller whose UK site lists ‘genuinely hand painted’ oils from £609 and 200 × 100 cm works at £1,309 (with a 60% discount badge) and £1,689 on a stretcher with a certificate, delivered in 12–14 days with a 100-day return policy; the pages do not say where the paintings are produced 199198197.

Who imports, frames and sells on marketplaces, and what do buyers complain about?

Artfinder and Rise Art set the terms UK buyers expect from online originals, a £100 floor, 14-day free returns on stock work and none on commissions, and the recurring complaints on review sites concern delivery and frames arriving warped rather than the paintings 145273028135. Artfinder enforces a £100 minimum and a £50,000 ceiling per painting 145, lists about 25,000 paintings from international sellers in bands from Under £250 to Over £2,001 146, gives 14 days from receipt to request a return with free collection 27, and holds a Trustpilot score of 4.7 from 6,910 reviews, about 92% five-star, with warped frames on framed deliveries a recurring complaint in recent reviews (accessed September 2026) 28. Rise Art (London) lists 29,744 paintings shipping from five countries and shows USD prices to a visitor abroad 16; its commission service takes a 50% deposit, sends progress photos, collects the balance on approval and excludes commissions from returns as custom-made 30. That mirrors the law: UK distance-selling rules give 14 days to cancel, but personalised or custom-made items are exempt, which suggests a made-to-size canvas falls under the exemption 26. Rise Art frames each work bespoke through its own framers, about 10–14 days to delivery, which suggests the online norm is ship unframed, frame locally 31.

Importers are thin on evidence. KunstLoft's UK Trustpilot profile has 3 reviews (score 3.9), none about a large canvas 200. Chinese trade-painting exporters court the sector directly: Dafen-village wholesalers offer studio sourcing to interior designers, hotel developers and art consultants at project scale, and one says on its own site that it has supplied hand-painted reproductions to hotels and design firms in the UK since 1998 154. At the print end, Canvas Art Rocks scores 3.4 from 573 reviews with 28% one-star, the complaints about missed delivery dates and unanswered messages 135, while the top listings in Trustpilot's UK paintings category on 19 September 2026 were small British studios such as Happy Art Prints (Leeds, 4.9 from 554 reviews) and Felinsart (London, 4.7 from 127) 137.

Framers and installers are the local half of any large canvas. Soho Frames (London) prices stretching at £85 per finished metre of perimeter and tray or floater frames at £70–£145 per metre, list prices before tax 204; for a rolled 150 × 100 cm (59 × 39 in) canvas (5 m perimeter) that computes to about £425 to stretch plus £350–£725 for a tray frame, an estimate from one framer's list 204. SE1 Picture Frames quotes on sight and notes that collectors often bring work ‘rolled up and transported in a tube’ for re-stretching 205; London Art Biennale stretches exhibitors' canvases free up to 150 × 150 cm and for £50 up to 250 cm 206. For hanging, The London Picture Hanger charges £150 for the first hour and £30 per half-hour after 207, Silver Saints £60 plus tax for the first 30 minutes 208, and Art of Hanging quotes for large or heavy work 209.

What does a square metre of wall art cost in the UK, tier by tier?

About £50–£240 per m² at the chains; £655–£1,460 per m² for the middle tier of imported hand-painted oils and UK studio commissions; £910–£4,860 per m² for marketplace and gallery-grade originals, with Rise Art's large works at roughly USD 3,300–4,500 per m² (September 2026) 1431421981112203146816. Every figure is computed from a single listing or price list on the date given and is illustrative, not an average 14611.

Two caveats. Coppini's price includes framing and delivery while Ashwood's is a bare canvas, and chain prices are for framed pieces, whereas a rolled original carries roughly £775–£1,150 (before tax) of stretching and tray framing at one central-London framer's rates for 150 × 100 cm, or £930–£1,380 for 200 × 100 cm, before it hangs 1211204. And Rise Art's USD figures come from geo-detection rather than a GBP price list, and its artists are not necessarily British 16.

Where do made-to-order originals sit?

Above about 150 cm, in panoramic formats, and wherever a wall needs exact dimensions or a matched palette: the chains stop at 135 cm, Coppini's list at 120 × 100 cm, KunstLoft's XXL range at four fixed sizes up to 200 × 100 cm, and the Soho Home × Rise Art edit at about 150–160 cm on the long side (September 2026) 14212197163. Larger work exists in the UK by application, since Ashwood prices sizes above 200 × 100 cm on request and Swarez sets no maximum, at about 4 weeks and 8–12 weeks respectively with deposits of 20–50% 111312. Which suggests, as an observation about the ranges seen rather than a survey of demand, that works above 150 cm are thinly served by the stocked UK channels 163.

iHomeArt sits in that gap as a trade supplier of hand-painted originals: 1,455 works painted to order in any size, 2 m+ and panoramic formats included, about one week to paint plus 3–7 days transit, free insured shipping, progress photos with stage-by-stage approval, signed with a certificate of authenticity, rolled, stretched or framed, minimum order one piece with volume pricing from ten, no public prices and quotes within one business day. Against a UK studio commission the difference is lead time and size ceiling, not process: Rise Art's own commission service uses the same deposit, progress-photo and approval-then-balance pattern 30. Against KunstLoft's stocked oils the difference is that the work is painted to the wall rather than chosen from four sizes; once London stretching and framing are added, a rolled import will not undercut a £655–£845 per m² stocked canvas, so it competes on fit and scale rather than price 197198204.

Four things the UK evidence says an overseas supplier must answer. Quality doubt: in a YouGov survey of 700 GB adults (April 2024), 71% worried about product quality when buying from deep-discount Chinese marketplaces, 43% about returns and 42% about delivery times, so progress photos, a certificate and a stated lead time have to be explicit 23. Trust signals: ‘hand painted’, ‘signed’ and centimetre sizes are what an Artfinder listing shows at point of sale, one example rather than a norm 36. Origin preference: one UK trade supplier's 2026 guidance names ‘a preference for UK-based artists’ among the year's drivers, a headwind met only with named painters and provenance 134. The frame: warped frames are the recurring Artfinder complaint and re-stretching rolled canvases is routine London trade, so shipping rolled and framing locally is the lower-risk route for large work 28205. For trade buyers, one general artists' pricing guide (May 2026) calls a 20–30% discount standard and notes that some designers ask for 40–50% 35, and custom-made work is exempt from the 14-day change-of-mind right, so the approval stages carry the weight a return would otherwise carry 26.

Questions buyers in United Kingdom ask

What is the largest painting I can buy off the shelf in the UK?
At the chains, 135 × 60 cm: John Lewis's largest own-brand canvas is a print at £175 and nothing above about 1.4 m is listed (September 2026). KunstLoft UK stocks hand-painted oils at 200 × 100 cm for £1,309–£1,689, and Artfinder listed a 160 × 180 cm oil at £14,000 142198197146.
How much does a commissioned abstract cost from a UK painter?
Published lists put 100 × 100 cm at £699 and 200 × 100 cm at £1,795 (Ashwood, about 4 weeks) and 120 × 100 cm at £1,750+ with framing and delivery included (Coppini, 8–12 weeks, 50% deposit); an August 2026 CommissionIt guide says large abstracts run ‘from the high hundreds into several thousand pounds’ 111214.
Do UK galleries publish prices?
Some do. Fosse Gallery (Stow-on-the-Wold) shows works at £550–£950 on its homepage, but Contemporary Six (Hale) lists painting prices on request and The Scottish Gallery (Edinburgh) shows none. A 2026 directory guide estimates debut-artist oils at £800–£1,500 and mid-career gallery oils at £4,000–£8,000 150151152148.
Can I return a commissioned painting in the UK?
Generally no. UK distance-selling rules give 14 days to cancel stock purchases, but personalised or custom-made items are exempt, and Rise Art states commissioned works cannot be returned. Stock originals on Artfinder can be returned within 14 days with free collection 263027.
What does it cost to stretch and frame a rolled canvas in London?
Soho Frames lists stretching at £85 per finished metre of perimeter and tray frames at £70–£145 per metre before tax, so a 150 × 100 cm canvas costs about £425 to stretch and £350–£725 to frame; SE1 Picture Frames quotes on sight and says canvases arriving rolled in tubes are routine 204205.
Where do UK buyers actually buy affordable originals?
At the Affordable Art Fair, whose three London fairs drew nearly 60,000 visitors in 2025 with 55% of sales under £500; on Artfinder, which lists about 25,000 paintings from a £100 floor; and through Own Art, 0% loans of £250–£25,000 at member galleries funded by the four UK arts councils 6514614570.
