One white peony opens so wide that it fills most of the square, its petals laid in thick, creamy slabs around a burning centre of amber, saffron and orange stamens. The lower petals are tinged pink and red at their edges, and three closed buds, one orange-red and two amber, sit near the corners like smaller echoes of the main bloom.

Behind it the ground is a dark mix of teal, slate and plum, broken by green leaves and a scatter of tiny orange flecks. The flower appears lit from within, so the corners fall into shadow and attention goes straight to the centre.
