How do you size a painting for a Qatari wall?
Measure the wall after the seating plan is fixed, then let three numbers set the size: the run of furniture below, the viewing distance, and the ceiling height. Gulf majlis guidance lists seating, chandeliers, upholstery, curtains and mirrors before accessories, and paintings fall in that last category 203, so the wall is rarely measured for art until the sofas are in; made-to-order work suits that order, because the canvas is then painted to the bay. Qatar publishes no ceiling-height standard. A detached majlis may be 7.5–10 m tall and hold a mezzanine of up to 80% of its floor area 136137, which suggests single-level ceilings well above 4 m and a second viewing level. Our rule: the painting spans about two-thirds of the seating run below it and about one-third of the distance it is viewed from, whichever is larger.
How wide should the painting on a majlis wall be?
250–350 cm (98–138 in) wide for the wall facing the host's seat, panoramic or horizontal, or a matched pair or triptych centred on the seating axis. The traditional majlis is a large carpeted room with cushions against the walls 84; Gulf seating runs along the walls on the floor or a raised shelf 85, so the picture zone is the band above the backrests and the work is read across the full room. A modern-neoclassic majlis published in August 2026 measures 150 m² with wall mouldings 204; across a room that size a 150 cm canvas reads as a miniature, which is why we start at 250 cm and why a 2:1 panoramic suits a wall whose seating is long and low.
Qatari majlis interiors are described with chandeliers, detailed wall panels and symmetrical seating 165 and one accent wall that draws the eye upward 164. Where the wall is panelled, size the painting to the central bay; where seating is symmetrical, a pair of 150 × 200 cm (59 × 79 in) verticals either side of the host's seat respects the axis better than one off-centre canvas. Hang lower than in a standing room: with guests on cushions or low-profile sofas 85125, set the centre at 120–135 cm (47–53 in) from the floor, or the bottom edge 20–30 cm above the backrest.

Which format suits the double-height reception and entrance hall?
A tall vertical of 250–350 cm (98–138 in), hung with its bottom edge about 100 cm above the floor so it reads from the ground floor and the mezzanine. The 2026 rules allow an internal mezzanine of up to 35% of a villa's area 137, Pearl villas advertise a double-height reception and soaring ceilings 146255, and the largest room in the middle-class villas surveyed by Qatar University was the 10 × 5 m entry hall with the men's majlis beside it 143. That plan gives a 10 m wall seen from 5 m, which takes a horizontal 300 × 120 cm (118 × 47 in) or a series, and a 5 m end wall seen down the room, which takes a vertical that stops the eye.
Family living halls, dining rooms and the bedroom wings
Family halls and dining rooms take 150–250 cm (59–98 in) wide; master suites 120–180 cm (47–71 in) above the bed; family-wing bedrooms 80–120 cm (31–47 in). The Qatari villa is a set of reception rooms rather than one living room: a grand villa in Al Dafna lists three family lounges plus an interior majlis on the ground floor, an external majlis, and living halls on the first and penthouse floors 147; a Lusail villa has three majlis rooms 144; the 2026 rules add independent family wings for adult children and elderly relatives 139. Each family hall is a sofa-scaled room seen from 4–6 m, which suggests a horizontal spanning two-thirds of the main sofa.
What size works in a Pearl, Lusail or Msheireb apartment?
120–200 cm (47–79 in) wide for the living-room wall; a 200–250 cm (79–98 in) vertical where the unit has a double-height living space. Two-bedroom apartments on The Pearl run about 134–221 m² and three-bedrooms from 204 m² 156; Msheireb's Wadi 1 lists two-bedrooms of 143–180 m² and four-bedrooms of 361 m² 160. The marketed feature is glass: an 850 m² Porto Arabia penthouse with majlis has floor-to-ceiling windows 145, and an 82 m² one-bedroom in La Plage South is sold on its double-height living concept 155. Glazing removes the long wall, so the painting goes on the wall perpendicular to the windows, opposite the sofa, and that wall sets the width; in a double-height unit the wall beside the void takes the 200–250 cm vertical.
Hotel rooms, lobbies and boardrooms
Guest rooms 120–180 cm (47–71 in) above the headboard; suites 150–200 cm (59–79 in); hotel and tower lobbies 250–400 cm (98–157 in); boardrooms 200–300 cm (79–118 in) horizontal. The Ned Doha's published pieces give the local benchmark for public areas: a 170 × 235 cm (67 × 93 in) acrylic on canvas, a commissioned 150 × 300 cm wool carpet and 100 × 100 cm squares 167. Andaz Doha's rooms are among the largest in the city at 44 m² 279, room for a 150–180 cm headboard work. Office scale runs larger: the Qatar Petroleum (now QatarEnergy) district's staff entrances open into 15 m high lobbies, with local artists commissioned for large-scale pieces in the lobbies and CEO suite under a three-tier programme 49, and Georgetown's atrium holds a 3.5 m high Berlin Wall segment 59. GWC's 29 commissioned canvases went to the reception lobby, meeting rooms and senior offices 48, the usual three tiers of a Doha brief: 250 cm or more in reception, 200–300 cm above the boardroom credenza, 120–180 cm in senior offices.

When should you go over 2 metres?
Whenever the wall is a reception wall: the majlis, the double-height hall, the lobby. That is the size Qatari rooms ask for and the size the local market does not stock. Of 828 paintings scraped from artQart in September 2026, only 45 were 1 m² or larger, 16 had a longest side of 150 cm or more and 3 reached 200 cm 2. The largest hand-painted canvas at a Doha mass-market retailer was 70 × 140 cm, with no Qatar price shown 227. Above that, 2 m originals are priced as rarities: Fathi Aref's 280 × 180 cm 'Storm' was listed at USD 27,000–30,000 across two reads of artQart on 12 September 2026 5.
Against a 150 m² majlis 204 or a 15 m lobby 49, this is the gap made-to-order work fills. iHomeArt's catalogue lists sizes up to 254 cm, 177 works already list a side of 250 cm or more, 106 are panoramic, and every work can be painted larger, so a 300 × 120 cm or 400 × 150 cm brief is a normal order. Over 350 cm wide, consider a diptych or triptych, which passes through a villa door; and confirm the wall first, because a Doha installer's terms note that installation depends on whether the wall is concrete or gypsum and that very large or heavy works may need additional support 23.
Which finish and frame suit the Qatari climate and interiors?
Hang away from the glass, light textured work from above, and choose gold, bronze or wood frames for the classic majlis and black or white float frames for the minimalist ones. The defining feature of new Qatari homes is glazing: floor-to-ceiling windows in Pearl penthouses 145 and West Bay Lagoon villas with high ceilings and large windows 163. Qatar's flag records what the desert sun does to pigment: the maroon was standardised in 1936 after a locally bought red dye faded to chocolate brown under it 88. Keep the painting on the wall perpendicular to the windows or behind sheers, never facing direct afternoon sun. Rooms are cooled continuously (air-conditioning is on the ten-item Gulf majlis checklist 203), so the risk to a canvas is the move from a hot vehicle into a cold room; let a rolled work acclimatise indoors before stretching.
Textured and plaster work depends on raking light, and the majlis supplies it: chandeliers and detailed wall panels 165; add a picture light or ceiling spot so the relief casts a shadow. On frames, the Doha framing menu at artQart runs to gold, walnut, black, white, champagne, bronze and mahogany 230, the Qatar Petroleum district uses walnut veneers, bronze and copper 49, and Katharine Pooley's Doha villas run to brass, bronze-inlaid doors and rosewood 248. A gold, bronze or wood frame therefore sits inside the classic villa's palette, while the off-white architecture-first house 122 and the Brutalist Ned 168 take a black or white float frame or a gallery-wrap edge. iHomeArt supplies work rolled, stretched or framed in gold, silver, black, white or wood; anything beyond DHL Express's standard 120 × 80 × 80 cm piece limit into Qatar 20 travels rolled around its short side and is stretched in Doha, which is also kinder to the canvas.

Questions buyers in Qatar ask
- What is the right painting size for a Qatari majlis?
- Plan on 250–350 cm (98–138 in) wide for the wall facing the host, in a panoramic format or a pair centred on the seating. Majlis seating runs along the walls, so the work is read across the room 85, and one 2026 Qatar majlis measures 150 m² 204. This is our inference; no Qatari standard exists.
- How high should a painting hang in a majlis?
- Lower than in a standing room. With guests on floor cushions, a raised shelf or low-profile sofas 85125, set the centre of the painting at 120–135 cm (47–53 in) from the floor, or the bottom edge 20–30 cm above the backrest, so the seated eye meets the middle of the work.
- How do I size a pair or triptych for a symmetrical majlis?
- Centre the set on the host’s seat and match the panel height to the seating band. Doha majlis interiors are built on symmetrical seating and wall panels 165, so a pair of 150 × 200 cm (59 × 79 in) verticals either side of the host, or a triptych totalling 300–350 cm (118–138 in) on the facing wall, respects the axis; three panels also pass a villa door more easily.
- What size suits a hotel guest room or a Pearl apartment?
- For a guest room, 120–180 cm (47–71 in) wide above the headboard; Andaz Doha's rooms are 44 m² 279. For a Pearl or Msheireb apartment of 134–361 m² 156160, 120–200 cm on the wall perpendicular to the floor-to-ceiling glazing 145, or a 200–250 cm vertical in a double-height unit 155.
- Should a large canvas arrive rolled or stretched?
- Usually rolled. DHL Express’s standard piece limit into Qatar is 120 × 80 × 80 cm 20, so a stretched 200 cm canvas exceeds it; rolled around its short side the same canvas fits a tube and is stretched in Doha. Let the roll acclimatise in the air-conditioned room before stretching, and confirm whether the wall is concrete or gypsum before fixing 23.
- Which frame finish fits Qatari interiors?
- Gold, bronze, walnut or mahogany for the classic majlis, matching Doha's local framing menu 230 and the walnut, bronze and brass used in Qatari villas and offices 49248; black or white float frames, or no frame, for the off-white architecture-first house 122. Keep the work out of direct sun from floor-to-ceiling windows 163.
