Why do Qatari villa walls need bigger paintings than the size guides assume?
Because the house is built as a set of separate reception rooms, each with a long, high wall, rather than around one living room. A grand villa in Al Dafna listed in September 2026 at QAR 9,600,000 (1,120 m² built-up) has three family lounges and an interior majlis on the ground floor, an independent external majlis, living halls on the first and penthouse floors and nine master bedrooms 147; a nine-bedroom villa in Ijara, Lusail, has three majlis rooms (QAR 19,000,000) 144; a 622 m² Giardino Gardens villa on The Pearl (QAR 18,000,000) rises over four levels around a double-height reception 146. Across the listings captured the separate majlis with its own entrance is standard, which suggests a typical upper-middle villa has at least two reception spaces and often a double-height one, so the walls needing a large work multiply per house 148.
The envelope grew again in 2026. Ministerial Decision No. 108 of 2026, gazetted on 25 June 2026, raised the maximum villa height to 16 m, a figure that includes roof structures and the warish, or privacy wall 140135136; an external majlis building may be 7.5–10 m tall with a mezzanine 136; majlis mezzanines may cover up to 80% of the majlis space 137; villas may contain independent suites for adult children or relatives 139. A 2023 Qatar University study of four middle-class Qatari villas built around 2015 found the largest space in one was the main entry hall, 10 × 5 m, with the male majlis beside it 143.
No source gives a typical ceiling height. Our inference: a 16 m envelope over three floors allows floor-to-floor heights of 4 m and more, and a majlis annex of up to 10 m with a mezzanine is by definition double-height 135136. Our working rule: above a 0.85 m sofa back and under a 0.3 m ceiling margin, a 3.2 m room leaves about 2 m of wall for a 120–140 cm (47–55 in) tall canvas; a double-height reception leaves 3.5 m or more, where a 200–250 cm (79–98 in) tall work or a 300 cm (118 in) wide horizontal hangs without crowding. Local retail stops well short of those sizes; the figures are in the sourcing section below 2272.
What does the majlis wall need?
One wide, non-figurative work above the seating line — or a matched pair — read from across a room that can be 150 m². Every Qatari house has a majlis, the men's reception space near the main entrance; wealthy families build a large establishment with its own kitchen and guest rooms 83. UNESCO describes a large space with carpets on the floor and cushions against the wall 84; seating runs along the walls, so the wall above the cushions is the natural picture zone 85. A Qatar design firm's August 2026 walkthrough shows a 150 m² 'Modern Neoclassic' majlis with wall mouldings and custom ceilings — a single reception room of 150 m² 204, where the far wall is seen from 8–12 m (our estimate from the area), a hotel-lobby distance.
What Doha majlis walls carry, according to the firms that build them: one dominant accent wall, a crystal chandelier and suede upholstery in a classic Doha project 164; chandeliers, wall panels with Islamic-inspired geometry and symmetrical seating in Algedra's 2025 guide, which names wall art and 'artwork chandeliers' as the focal points of formal majlis spaces 165217; low sofas, muted palettes, hidden lighting and geometric wall panels in the 'modern majlis' 125. A widely viewed Arabic-language guide to the 2027 women's majlis lists style, colours, seating, chandeliers, fabrics, curtains, mirrors, accessories and tables — art is not named and falls under accessories, which suggests it is chosen last and sized to what the seating and chandelier leave 203.
Subject matter follows the room's formality. Some households follow the hadith that angels do not enter a house with pictures, so calligraphy and abstraction sit more comfortably in a formal majlis than figures, even though figurative work is shown and sold openly in Qatar 9012; luxury fit-outs use LED calligraphy and kinetic mashrabiya screens there 110; the informal local offer is abstract plus Arabic calligraphy with metallic paints, sizes on request 211. Two palettes are native: Al Sadu's geometric bands in black, white, brown, beige and red, inscribed by UNESCO for Qatar in 2025 89, and Qatar maroon, Pantone 1955 C 88. Where mouldings dominate, the honest answer is often one panoramic canvas facing the entrance and nothing else 204.
From the catalogue
Family living halls and the ladies’ reception room
The family halls take the largest horizontals after the majlis; the ladies' reception takes the most decorative work. Ladies receive their own guests in a room set aside inside the home 83, and women hold their own majlis gatherings 84. The Al Dafna villa has three family lounges plus upper living halls 147; the 2026 rules add independent family wings, hence more living halls per house 139; Algedra shows majlis rooms opening to living rooms through sliding screens, with low sofas and pale carpets 217.
The palette is neutral. Current Qatari residential trends are beige limestone floors, soft white walls and natural wood, with Modern Arabic and minimal contemporary as the trending styles 125; residents increasingly prefer modern and minimalist furniture 309; a Doha villa by NK Interior uses beige, grey and travertine under floor-to-ceiling windows 253; Antonovich's Doha villa uses neutral beige with a deliberately 'hotel-like ambience' 251. Collector Tariq Al Jaidah keeps his Doha home off-white and plain so the architecture frames rather than competes with the collection 122. On such a wall a Textured & Plaster or Contemporary Minimalist work in the same tones reads as part of the architecture, and colour is better carried by one work than several — our inference, not a rule any source states.
What fits the entrance hall and the double-height void?
One tall vertical, centred on the half-landing rather than at ground-floor eye level. In the Qatar University sample the 10 × 5 m entry hall was the largest space in the villa 143; the Giardino Gardens villa pairs a double-height reception with a private elevator to all four levels 146; even an 82 m² one-bedroom in La Plage South was sold on its double-height living concept 155. Katharine Pooley's 10,000 sq ft Doha villa hangs a Swarovski chandelier through the entrance hall and mentions no paintings 248 — the entrance here competes with lighting, so a canvas needs height, not width. Al Jaidah's entry hangs Farid Belkahia's henna-and-pigment work above two antique Syrian chairs 122. Where the family rides an elevator, the void is seen from landings and the hall floor, so the work should read at 6–8 m as one shape and colour (our inference): a horse in relief, a single tree, a vertical geometry.
Dining room: seated viewing, long tables
A horizontal at seated eye level, sized to the table, on the wall facing the door. Grand villas have dining rooms served by wet and dry kitchens, with decorative ceilings in the guest areas 165. This is where subject matter can be local and figurative: the recurring subjects are heritage architecture, falcons, Arabian horses, dhows, the sea and desert 12; Ali Dasmal Al Kuwari prices a 150 × 100 cm 'Souq Waqif' at USD 9,000 and desert scenes at USD 1,650 each (September 2026) 3; an Iran-based seller pushes horses and eagles to Doha at QAR 1,399–1,800 in custom sizes 210; Rosewood Doha placed landscapes by Yasser Al Mulla in its suites 170. Al Jaidah's sideboard anchors a painting by Faeq Hassan 122. Seated eyes sit at about 120 cm, so a work centred at 140–150 cm (55–59 in) and two-thirds the table's length is the usual rule; no Qatari source states one, so treat it as ours.
Master suites and the family wings
Calm, low-contrast works in the bed's width, one per suite — and there are many suites. Lusail's new villas are five-bedroom standard with five master bedrooms in Huzoom 150; an off-plan Lusail promotion advertises six en-suite bedrooms 206; the Al Dafna villa has nine master suites 147. Palettes vary per room: Katharine Pooley's villa near the Museum of Islamic Art uses magenta in one bedroom and navy, grey and biscuit beige in another 250; the Four Seasons Doha redesign uses blues and beige for sky, sea, sand and earth 190. Rosewood Doha's suite programme is 'abstract expressions of desert light or photographic moments drawn from the coast' 171 — a workable brief for a private bedroom. A 5–6 m bed-head wall takes a 150–180 cm (59–71 in) horizontal or a pair, and the family wings permitted in 2026 139 are where a palette variation of one work keeps the house coherent.
Home office, library and the penthouse floor
A mid-size geometric or minimalist work for the office; a second large horizontal for the penthouse hall. Grand villas include libraries, home theatres and gyms 165; since 2019 the rooftop may carry 70% of the villa footprint 142, and listings show penthouse living halls with three master suites and terraces 147146. Doha's corporate reference is abstract: GWC's 2021 brief for 29 canvases asked for abstract paintings that complemented the interior 48. Al Jaidah collects Mehdi Moutashar 122, whose geometric 'Aspire House' stands in Aspire Park 75. A penthouse hall lit from the side by terrace glazing favours a matte textured surface over a varnished one (our inference).
Apartments on The Pearl, in Lusail and Msheireb: where the two-metre rule does not apply
Ordinary apartment rules — 120–200 cm (47–79 in) works — except in double-height and penthouse units. Typical Pearl Island sizes are about 68 m² for studios, 134–221 m² for two-bedrooms and 204 m² and up for three-bedrooms, across roughly 25,000 units with a median listing price of QAR 2.35 million 156; Msheireb's Wadi 1 offers two-bedrooms of 143–180 m² and three-bedrooms of 231–249 m² 160. Pearl penthouses run from 340 m² at QAR 2,800,000 to 432 m² at QAR 4,800,000 (September 2026) 154, and an 850 m² furnished penthouse with majlis in Porto Arabia listed at QAR 8,200,000 with floor-to-ceiling windows 145. Premium three-bedrooms in The Pearl, Lusail and West Bay rent at QAR 10,000–15,000 or more per month (Q2 2026) 207. Two things differ from villas. Much of the stock is furnished or serviced: a Porto Arabia penthouse is marketed as 'furnished by That's Living Qatar', which suggests decor packages are bought by furnishers rather than residents 199, and the USD 2,000–3,442-a-month units expat vloggers call 'luxury' are serviced rentals where the operator buys the wall art 205. And the view is the picture: sea-facing glazing sets the palette, which is where Gulf-blue seascapes and pale minimalist work belong (our inference).
Where does made-to-order fit?
Between decorative prints and gallery originals, Qatar has almost no hand-painted supply at the sizes these walls need. Homes r Us Qatar's 148 framed artworks stop at 120 cm on the long side, the dearest an 80 × 120 cm print at QAR 399 (regular QAR 499), all prints 222; IKEA Qatar peaks at a 179 × 112 cm nine-piece printed set for QAR 225 224; Danube Home's only hand-painted item is 70 × 140 cm with no Qatar price 227. On artQart, 786 priced paintings had a median asking price of USD 376 (about QAR 1,370) and USD 1,600 per m²; 45 were 1 m² or larger and 3 reached 200 cm (September 2026) 2. Qatari-national vendors price at a median USD 3,182 per m² (about QAR 11,600) 4, and the dearest local canvas, Fathi Aref's 280 × 180 cm 'Storm' at USD 27,000, is one of 15 listings above USD 10,000 5. Galleries do not publish prices; Anima and Al Markhiya commission on request 10234. Resale is negligible — four wall-art and two fine-art listings on OpenSooq for all of Qatar on 12 September 2026 208 — and the informal made-to-order layer is WhatsApp-led painters 211219. The local benchmark for commission terms is artQart's: a buyer-stated budget, a 30–50% non-refundable deposit, progress photos, no returns 7. Hanging costs QAR 200 per artwork in Doha 23.
iHomeArt's terms sit alongside that benchmark. Each of its 1,455 works is painted to order in any size — 2 m-plus and panoramic formats are normal and the catalogue lists sizes to 254 cm (100 in) — with palette changes possible, so one composition can be varied across nine suites; progress photos or video are sent for stage-by-stage approval; painting takes about one week and transit 3–7 days, 10–13 days door to door, shipped free and insured. DHL Express's standard piece limit into Qatar is 120 × 80 × 80 cm 20, so a large canvas usually travels rolled around its short side and is stretched or framed in Doha. The full terms are on Local supply and prices. As a yardstick, GWC's 2021 commission of 29 canvases took eight weeks of concept work and 20 days of execution 48.
The Al Dafna listing — 1,120 m² built-up, external and interior majlis, three family lounges, nine master suites — illustrative schedule (hypothetical)
An illustrative schedule built from catalogue references, not a client project. Every piece would be painted to the wall's own dimensions.

Questions buyers in Qatar ask
- Do the external majlis and the interior majlis take the same art?
- No. The external majlis is the formal men’s reception near the entrance, often a detached building that the 2026 rules allow to rise 7.5–10 m with a mezzanine 83136: one non-figurative panoramic above the seating line. The interior majlis and the ladies’ reception sit inside the home and are seen from a sofa 83, so they take colour, texture and a nearer viewing distance.
- Can a figurative painting hang in the majlis?
- It can — Katara’s 2026 season opened with 25 portraits and horses are the most-listed subject on Doha’s marketplace 12 — but some households follow the hadith that angels do not enter a house with pictures 90. For a formal majlis you have not seen, default to non-figurative and keep horses, falcons and dhows for the dining and family rooms 3.
- Which palette suits the new villas in Lusail and on The Pearl?
- Neutral. Current Qatari residential trends are beige limestone floors, soft white walls and natural wood, and Doha villas by NK Interior and Antonovich use beige, grey and travertine 125253251. Two native accents exist: Al Sadu bands in black, white, brown, beige and red, and Qatar maroon, Pantone 1955 C 8988.
- How many paintings does a villa actually need?
- Count the reception walls, not the rooms. A grand Al Dafna villa lists an external majlis, an interior majlis, three family lounges, two upper living halls and nine master suites 147; Lusail villas are five- or six-bedroom standard 150206. That is ten to fifteen walls before corridors, so volume pricing matters more than any single piece.
- Where does the painting go when the majlis wall is panelled?
- In the central bay, or facing the entrance. Doha majlis interiors carry detailed wall panels, chandeliers and symmetrical seating 165, and the 150 m² modern-neoclassic room published in August 2026 is moulded on every wall 204. Size one panoramic canvas to the bay above the host’s seat and leave the side panels bare rather than fighting the mouldings.
- What hangs in the dining room, and at what height?
- The room for local, figurative subjects — heritage architecture, falcons, Arabian horses, dhows and the desert 12 — priced locally from USD 1,650 for a desert scene to USD 9,000 for a 150 × 100 cm Souq Waqif 3. Seated eyes sit at about 120 cm, so centre the work at 140–150 cm (55–59 in) and size it to two-thirds of the table; that rule is ours, not a Qatari standard.
- Do apartments on The Pearl need the same scale as villas?
- No, unless they are penthouses or double-height units. Typical Pearl two-bedrooms are 134–221 m² and three-bedrooms 204 m² and up 156; penthouses reach 340–850 m² with floor-to-ceiling windows 154145. Much of the stock is furnished or serviced, so the furnisher or operator, not the resident, often buys the wall art 199205.
