Offices and institutions in Qatar: who commissions art, and what the walls need

Institutional art in Qatar is placed mostly by the state: Qatar Museums puts works directly into hospitals, the airport, universities and office buildings, and the privately procured corporate painting programmes the research found — Gulf Warehousing Company's 29 canvases and Qatar Petroleum's (now QatarEnergy) three-tier scheme for an office district with 15 m lobbies — are the exception 754849. Below that tier the local supply of large originals is thin: of 828 paintings on Qatar's own art marketplace in September 2026, 45 were 1 m² or larger and three reached 200 cm, and the leading galleries publish no prices 210. Below: who commissions, how big each space is, what hangs, and what to ask a supplier for.

Who in Qatar commissions art for offices and institutions?

The documented buyers fall into three groups: the state and its museums, which place most institutional art directly; a short list of energy, logistics and telecom companies with their own programmes; and the universities and hospitals of Education City and Hamad Medical Corporation, which receive art through committees and donations 7549485651.

Headquarters and corporate campuses. The largest documented programme is Qatar Petroleum's West Bay district: 692,000 m² of workplace interior across nine office towers and an executive tower, with a three-tier art programme — primary for executive areas, secondary for director-level spaces, tertiary for typical floors — and local artists commissioned for large-scale pieces in the lobbies and the CEO suite (2021) 49. Gulf Warehousing Company commissioned 29 oil and acrylic canvases from two VCUarts Qatar students and an alumna for its Ras Bufontas regional centre, installed by April 2021 in the reception lobby, meeting rooms and senior leadership offices, after eight weeks of concept work and 20 days of execution 48. The next wave of headquarters is in Msheireb Downtown Doha: Qatar Airways is moving its global headquarters into four interconnected towers there, announced in November 2024, and Qatar Tourism announced its own relocation in January 2026 6465. Lusail Towers, anchored by Qatar National Bank, Qatar Central Bank, the Qatar Investment Authority and Qatari Diar, have no art programme described in the sources (January 2021) 66.

Universities and libraries. Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar's Public Art Committee, established in 2008, has hand-picked 45 works across the campus, including murals and watercolours by Qatari artist Ali Hassan 56. Qatar Foundation's public-art portfolio across Education City exceeds 100 works and its 2015 headquarters holds five pieces 5554. Qatar National Library's foyer holds Ramin Shirdel's magenta calligraphic 'Nun wa al Qalam' (2018), and Georgetown University in Qatar's atrium a Berlin Wall segment over 3.5 m high 5859.

Hospitals and clinics. Hospital art arrives by donation and through Qatar Museums rather than by tender: Qatar Museums and Hamad Medical Corporation installed 22 floor-to-ceiling prints of Museum of Islamic Art images at corridor intersections in three hospitals in 2012, on anti-bacterial, fire-resistant material with Arabic and English labels; Al Housh Art Gallery committed 140 printed paintings of Qatari heritage, marine life and wildlife to HMC in January 2021, sized to each location; and in March 2023 Qatar Museums installed works by local artists at HMC's Women's Wellness and Research Centre and other facilities 525153.

Coworking, banks and professional firms. Workinton's coworking branch at M7 in Msheireb, opened in March 2022, hangs a life-sized MINI Cooper painted by Sheikh Mubarak bin Nasser Al Thani 62. For banks, law firms and accountancies no acquisition programme was found; Qatar Museums' deputy chief executive said in January 2026 that Qatar 'still needs that commercial driver for art to be stronger', and collector Tariq Al Jaidah has called for more corporate collecting as in Saudi Arabia and the UAE 79105. Across the sources, Qatar Museums places works directly, so privately procured corporate painting programmes are the exception rather than the norm 75.

How big are the walls? Lobby, boardroom, corridors, executive floors and waiting areas

Qatar's institutional walls are measured in storeys: the QP district's staff entrances open into 15 m high lobbies, the M7 office building in Msheireb carries an 8 m Isa Genzken rose, and the Sheraton's hall holds a 170 × 4,950 cm neon by Martin Creed 4974. Typical office floor plates and ceiling heights are not documented in the sources — Knight Frank's Q1 2026 Qatar review sits behind a download form — so the format guidance below is inferred from the documented buildings 298.

Lobby and reception. Under a 15 m ceiling a 127 × 254 cm canvas reads as a picture rather than a statement, which suggests a vertical work of 250 cm (98 in) or more, a matched pair, or one canvas painted to 300–400 cm (118–157 in) on the long side (inference from 49). The finishes in Doha's largest corporate lobbies are Italian marbles including Calcutta Oro, walnut veneer, bronze, copper and black glass, which suggests textured neutrals, gold and grey will sit better than saturated colour 49. Public buildings also carry a material spec: the hospital prints were made on anti-bacterial, fire-resistant material with bilingual labels 52.

Boardroom and executive floors. The QP executive tower places a boardroom with a majlis on level 20 and reserves the primary art tier for executive areas 49. A majlis seats guests along the walls, so the band above the seating line is the picture zone, which favours panoramic formats around 100–130 cm (39–51 in) tall and 250 cm (98 in) or more wide (inference from 85). For a boardroom end wall the benchmark is one work facing the chair: the largest canvases on Qatar's marketplace run to 280 × 180 cm and The Ned Doha hangs a 170 × 235 cm acrylic in its public areas, so 130–180 cm (51–71 in) tall by 230–280 cm (91–110 in) wide is a scale Doha already buys 5167.

Corridors and open-plan. The hospital programme placed its images at corridor intersections, floor to ceiling: the wall a corridor turns towards carries the picture 52. GWC's 29 canvases covered the lobby, meeting rooms, leadership offices 'and other sections' of one regional centre — roughly one work per meeting room and office plus a series for circulation 48. For open-plan bays, same-format works of 100–120 cm (39–47 in) in one palette keep the floor legible (inference).

Waiting areas and clinics. HMC's group chief said the arts 'can have a therapeutic effect on people', and the Health Minister that art 'can transform stark clinical environments into compassionate care spaces' 5253. The subjects HMC has accepted are Qatari heritage, marine life and wildlife, sized to each location 51. Calm landscapes, seascapes and non-figurative work at 100–150 cm (39–59 in), hung at seated eye level, follow that precedent (inference).

What subjects and palettes work in a Doha office or public building?

Abstract is the documented corporate default: the GWC brief asked for paintings that were 'abstract, complementing the interior decor and incorporating GWC's corporate culture', with a few realistic pieces tied to the company's logistics work 48. Rosewood Doha's programme with Qatari artists, the most recent large commission in the sources, is 'abstract expressions of desert light or photographic moments drawn from the coast' 171.

The local canon. Recurring Qatari subjects are heritage architecture, falcons, Arabian horses, dhows and the sea, the desert and Arabic calligraphy 12. Historically figurative art was rare in Qatar and calligraphy, architecture and textiles were valued more, which is one reason calligraphy and abstraction sit more comfortably in a formal reception space than figures 8690. Two precedents set the boundary: the Qatar Museums Authority covered and removed two Greek nude statues from a 2013 exhibition citing 'community needs and standards', and Damien Hirst's foetus bronzes at Sidra stayed covered from 2013 to November 2018 9195. For a corporate or public building this means no nudity and, for most clients, no portraits in reception areas (inference).

Calligraphy: the demand signals conflict. At the 2015 Doha calligraphy symposium most of Mohammed Jenaid's paintings sold, yet AlBahie's dedicated hurufiyya sale in Doha on 20 May 2026 saw weak demand, with several calligraphic lots passing 100274.

Colour. Qatar's official maroon is Pantone 1955 C (hex #8A1538), defined by the government in 2012 88. Al Sadu weaving runs geometric bands in black, white, brown, beige and red, and the 8,000 artworks made for Swissôtel Corniche Park Towers over six to seven years were designed from Sadu weaving 8950. The cuts below map those registers: desert-light abstracts, plaster neutrals for marble lobbies, geometric work in gold and in the Sadu palette, maroon-led works, Gulf seascapes, and the horse and falcon subjects Doha already pays for 312.

What does a corporate buyer in Qatar need from a supplier?

The local benchmark for made-to-order terms is artQart's commission service: the buyer sets a budget, size and completion date, pays a non-refundable deposit of 30–50% before work starts, receives progress photos through the platform, pays the balance on completion and cannot return the work 7. Ask any supplier to match each point in writing.

  • Spec sheet per work. Title, medium, size in cm, finish, weight and hanging method, and for public buildings fire performance and bilingual labelling, as the HMC corridor programme specified 52.
  • Certificate and signature. A private Doha reseller asking QAR 36,000 for a 100 × 75 cm palette-knife painting leads with 'signed front and back with studio certificate', which suggests the certificate is what supports value in this market 209.
  • Progress photos and approval stages. The GWC job ran eight weeks of concept and 20 days of execution, so an approval stage between sketch and finished canvas is what a Doha client expects 48.
  • Staged delivery and installation. artQart charges QAR 200 per artwork for on-site installation, notes that the method depends on concrete or gypsum walls, and warns that very large works need additional support 23. DHL Express's standard piece limit into Qatar is 120 × 80 × 80 cm, so a 250 cm canvas travels rolled around its short side and is stretched in Doha, or comes stretched by freight (inference from 20).
  • Clear commercial terms. Qatar's consumer-protection experts recommend clear disclosure of final pricing, delivery timelines, warranty, payment methods and return policies 44. The working week runs Sunday to Thursday 111.

Where the gap is. Doha's leading galleries publish no prices 10. On the marketplace the median original is about USD 1,600 per m² (about QAR 5,800), Qatari-national artists about USD 3,182 per m², and a 150 × 100 cm heritage scene by Ali Dasmal Al Kuwari USD 9,000; only 45 of 828 paintings were 1 m² or larger and three reached 200 cm 243. At the other end, framed prints at Homes r Us Qatar stop at 120 cm, the dearest 80 × 120 cm at QAR 399, and IKEA canvases cost about QAR 110–190 per m² 22214. Between those poles — hand-painted, 2 m and above, in a specified palette, on a fit-out schedule — there is almost no local supply 2. That is the brief made-to-order originals answer: iHomeArt paints every work to order in any size, with 2 m+ and panoramic formats routine and palette changes possible, sends progress photos or video for stage-by-stage approval, signs each piece with a certificate of authenticity, finishes rolled, stretched or framed, quotes within one business day, takes orders from one piece with volume pricing from ten, and delivers in about 10–13 days door to door with free insured shipping.

Questions buyers in Qatar ask

Who buys art for offices and institutions in Qatar?
Mostly the state: Qatar Museums places works directly in hospitals, the airport, universities and office buildings, and universities run committees such as CMU-Q's Public Art Committee (45 works). Privately procured corporate programmes — GWC's 29 canvases in 2021 and Qatar Petroleum's three-tier scheme — are the documented exceptions 75564849.
How large should a lobby painting be in a Doha tower?
Larger than a standard 127 × 254 cm canvas: the QP district's lobbies are 15 m high and the M7 office building carries an 8 m sculpture. A vertical of 250 cm (98 in) or more, a matched pair, or one canvas painted to 300–400 cm (118–157 in) on the long side reads at that scale (inference) 4974.
What subjects suit a corporate or public building in Qatar?
Abstract is the documented default (the GWC brief asked for it), with desert light, the coast, calligraphy, heritage architecture, horses and falcons as the local canon. Nudity has been covered or removed from public display in Qatar, so avoid it and, in reception areas, portraits 48171129195.
Which Doha fit-out firms will source the art?
Few name it. Mirabello Interiors offers 'Bespoke FF&E Curation' with no named art service, Salam Enterprises and Fast Builder Interiors list no artwork sourcing, and Essenza Design — whose Doha projects include the RasGas headquarters — is one of the few studios naming 'customized art and sculpture' as a service 113130131117. Al Markhiya Gallery at Katara procures, frames and installs for offices, without a price list 214.
What does a public building in Qatar require of the artwork itself?
A material spec and bilingual labels. The 22 floor-to-ceiling images Qatar Museums placed in three HMC hospitals in 2012 were printed on anti-bacterial, fire-resistant material with Arabic and English labels 52, and Al Housh’s 140 works for HMC were sized to each location before production 51. Ask a supplier for fire performance, cleaning method and a bilingual caption for every work.
What did Qatar Petroleum's three-tier art programme consist of?
Three tiers of placement across a 692,000 m² office district in West Bay: primary for executive areas, secondary for director-level spaces, tertiary for typical floors, with local artists commissioned for large-scale pieces in the 15 m lobbies and the CEO suite, and a boardroom with its own majlis on level 20 of the executive tower (2021) 49. It remains the template for a tiered Doha brief.
How long does a corporate art programme take?
GWC's 29-canvas commission took eight weeks of concept work and 20 days of execution in 2021, and the HMC prints were sized to each location before production. Fix the size list and palette at concept stage; painting and delivery is then the shorter part 4851.
