Why do UAE walls take bigger paintings than the standard size guides say?
Because the rooms are higher and the houses larger than the European or American homes those guides were written for. The Dubai Building Code requires a clear ceiling of at least 2.7 m in living and bedroom spaces, against the 2.134 m minimum of the International Residential Code 116; Trakhees, the regulator for Palm Jumeirah, allows single-storey heights up to 4.2 m 117. A Dubai brokerage founder's 2025 classification matches the listings — 2.7 m is compliance, 3.0–3.2 m is where luxury begins, 4.5–6.0 m double-height voids are ultra-luxury 118: Six Senses Residences on the Palm has 3.2 m ceilings 119, Jumeirah Living Business Bay up to 4 m 120, and double-height living rooms appear in mid-market Emaar and Dubai Properties family homes too 123124.
House size compounds the effect: Palm Jumeirah frond villas run 4,000–35,000 sq ft (370–3,250 m²) 139, Dubai Hills villas 2,900–30,000 sq ft (270–2,800 m²) 140, Saadiyat Island villas 4,725–22,098 sq ft (440–2,050 m²) 135, and Emirates Hills built-up areas commonly exceed 15,000 sq ft (1,400 m²), with September 2026 listings to 39,562 sq ft (3,675 m²) 125126.
A derived rule, not a sourced one: above a 0.85 m sofa back and under a 0.25 m ceiling margin, a 2.7 m room leaves about 1.6 m of hangable wall, taking a canvas up to roughly 120 cm tall; at 3.0–3.2 m the band grows to about 1.9–2.1 m and admits 150 cm-tall works; only the 4.5–6.0 m voids of foyers, majlis and main lounges take 200–300 cm verticals or stacked pieces 118. One affluent house has four to six distinct art walls, which suggests a coordinated set of four to eight works at different scales rather than one painting 138.
What does the majlis wall need?
One wide, non-figurative work — 240–360 cm across on the open wall — hung low enough for seated guests. Algedra describes its Abu Dhabi majlis briefs as perimeter seating along three walls with the floor left open, six-metre spans, four-metre ceilings and separate men's and women's entrances 128; Al Mujassam puts the men's majlis at a minimum of 40 m² with 3.5–4 m ceilings 129. Both cities still build it: a 13-bedroom Khalifa City A villa listed in September 2026 has a men's and a women's majlis on its 685 m² ground floor 130 and a four-bedroom Saadiyat Lagoons villa comes with a dedicated majlis 133.
With sofas on three walls, the entrance wall and the wall facing the door are the only long uninterrupted surfaces, and art above seating must clear roughly 90 cm sofa backs 128 over seats only 40–45 cm high 150. Derived: a six-metre wall viewed from 5–6 m wants a single work or set 240–360 cm wide — a panoramic or a two-to-three-panel run — centred at about 120–140 cm for seated eyes 128. Artecasso's 2026 guide, the only vendor source with concrete ratios, gives majlis widths of 4–6 m and ceilings of 3–4.5 m (4.5–6 m double-height) and recommends a single 150–200 cm canvas or a 180–280 cm multi-panel set 318.
Subject matter is where the majlis differs from every other room. A Dubai fit-out guide says calligraphy, geometric shapes and abstract constructions 'are also widely used', with figurative art absent 62; a 2026 studio article says majlis art 'often includes Quranic verses or poetic Arabic calligraphy' 63; an Arabic-language guide advises avoiding humans or animals in an Islamic-style majlis in favour of calligraphy or landscapes 75; the Islamweb fatwa most often surfaced on the question permits frames bearing the names of God and the Prophet and Islamic emblems, and does not rule on painted figures, so the reticence is customary rather than a single ruling 61. The safe zone is therefore calligraphy, geometry, abstraction, landscape, seascape and botanicals — an inference, not a survey of every household 7562. Palettes agree: beige, sand and camel with gold, burgundy and emerald accents 63; for 2026, beige and warm grey with matte gold or bronze 330; Abu Dhabi carries more ornament than Dubai — boiserie, gilding, mashrabiya, burgundy or forest-green velvet 323. Do not paint Arabic script unless the client supplies the text and a native reader checks it; misspelt or mirrored calligraphy reads as naive (inference) 69.
How large is the formal salon or double-height reception, and what scale registers there?
Reception rooms of about 90 m² with walls of 8–10 m and 14-plus seats need 2–3 m panoramics or multi-panel sets totalling 3–5 m; a single 150 × 200 cm canvas will not fill them. Algedra's Dubai villa formula is a dual reception — a formal salon facing the entrance seating 14 or more, a family area at the rear — and one Emirates Hills project with a reception of around 90 m² 128. A 90 m² room is roughly 9 × 10 m, so walls run 8–10 m (derived from that one room) 128. A 27,689 sq ft (2,572 m²) Hudayriat Island mansion lists a majlis, a formal lounge and multiple formal dining areas 136. Viewed from 8–10 m, the scale needed is 2–3 m panoramics, sets of 3–5 m, or one 2 m-plus vertical beside a double-height stair (derived) 128.
Two registers of taste compete for this wall. In Emirati filmmaker Abdulla Al Kaabi's Jumeirah villa the double-height great room hangs a painting and sculpture by Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim 308; in Jamie Hijazi Juffali's 13,000 sq ft Emirates Hills villa the ground-floor walls were kept white to be filled with 'happy art' 304. At the other pole, Villa Serenita on the Palm (2026) makes a wall of Cipollino Verde marble crossed with brass inlays the defining element of its double-height reception 254; where paintings go in such homes they compete with ornament, so scale and gold or metallic finishes matter (inference) 254. Palettes are shifting warm — Naz Interiors reports terracotta, amber, brass and aged bronze replacing white marble and grey, and clients wanting fewer, better pieces 325; ZEN Interiors' 865 m² Palm villa runs gold through every room and pairs it with blue in the living room 100. Aparna Kaushik's 2026 UHNW brief calls an integrated art programme 'standard specification' 85.
What goes in the double-height entrance and stair void?
A tall vertical of 250 cm or more, centred at 165–180 cm, or one large piece at the half-landing. The double-height foyer is the most repeated feature in the affluent stock: a Frond E Garden Homes villa lists a double-height foyer with glass lift and floating stair 138; the B8 Emirates Hills mansion pairs its double-height entry with a black-marble sculptural stair 127; Bayut searches return double-height voids in Arabian Ranches, Mudon and Dubai Hills family homes 123124. Artecasso puts villa hallways at 8–15 m and recommends hanging centres of 165–180 cm on high ceilings 318. InteriorItalia's observation that Dubai clients most often choose 'artwork that is too small, too bright, too plain', and its call for bold pieces in large entrances, names the failure mode this wall invites 115. Sunlight is the constraint: Al Kaabi partly blocked windows 'to keep things cool and protect the art' 308, which suggests a glazed stair void wants a shaded position or a work that tolerates strong light. Corridors take the series format, 60 × 80 cm works along 8–15 m runs (inference) 318.
What suits the family living room, where the house actually lives?
One large textured or colourful canvas on the single solid wall, sized to the sofa run, in the palette of the room's stone and timber. The family room sits behind the formal front: an Arabian Ranches 2 villa puts double-height formal living at the front and the family room upstairs 124; the Khalifa City A villa has a family room downstairs and a family lounge on the 707 m² first floor 130; Algedra places family seating at the rear opening to the garden 128. Because that rear wall is usually glass, the art wall is the solid one beside or opposite it (inference) 145.
The home tours show what owners hang here: Juffali's brief was 'vibrant, personal and layered with colour, art' 304; the Castros kept walls white 'to make the art stand out' and collect 'mostly figurative and colourful works' 309; Saina Babaee's Meadows villa uses a black-and-white diptych as the living-room statement 306. For the decorative tier, Artecasso states that in 2026 'one oversized piece with physical texture is more aligned with UAE interior trends than a cluster of smaller frames' and that 'in high-end minimal homes, texture replaces bold color' 319 — Art Smiley's 2026 trend list agrees 320. The size demand is real at every price point: a 2024 r/dubai poster had tried Home Centre, Danube, Pan Home and Homebox for a large abstract canvas and found nothing at the size wanted 229; a 2023 poster wanted a 65–75 inch (165–190 cm) diagonal, 'like a large TV', and found furniture shops 'on the smaller side' 232.
What does the formal dining wall take?
A horizontal of 150–200 cm on a standard wall, and a 150–200 cm-tall piece when the dining room is double-height. The formal dining room is fixed in the programme: the Khalifa City A villa has a dining hall beside the two majlis 130; a Mohamed Bin Zayed City villa lists a large formal dining room 131; the Dubai Hills Grove mansion has formal and informal dining 141; E Plus A Atelier's 2025 Palm villa is built around a triple-height atrium and a double-height dining room 88. Artecasso recommends 150–200 cm for a double-height dining wall 318. The commissioned precedent is Al Kaabi's dining room, where a black-and-white painting by Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim was made for the wall 308. Guests sit, so the majlis eye-level logic applies, but the table keeps viewers 2–4 m from the wall rather than 6 m (inference) 128; non-figurative subjects keep the room usable for formal company under the same guidance that governs the majlis 7562.
How big should the painting above the bed be, and what mood?
130–160 cm wide above a super-king bed, calm in mood, in the suite's own palette. Top-tier master suites are apartment-sized — over 200 m² in the B8 Emirates Hills mansion 127 — and often sit apart from the guest floor: the Frond E Garden Homes villa has a rooftop master with three guest bedrooms on the first floor 138, and the Signature Villas 'Grand Majlis' plan puts the master on the ground floor 137. Artecasso gives 130–160 cm above a super-king bed 318. In the published homes the principal suite carries a personal set rather than a statement: Al Kaabi's shows three paintings by Bahman Mohassess 308; Villa Serenita's has hand-painted de Gournay cherry blossoms framed by mouldings, with hand-painted wallpaper in a son's suite and pastel pinks in a daughter's 254. Guest suites in a five- or six-bedroom house repeat the format three to five times, where a coordinated series in varied palettes is easier to specify than five unrelated purchases (inference) 138135.

Home office and prayer room: what belongs, and what does not?
A quiet, non-figurative work of 100–150 cm for the office; only calligraphy or geometry, hung high, in a prayer room. Offices appear in the villa programmes — the Dubai Hills Grove mansion 141, the Hudayriat mansion with several 136, an off-plan Cedarwood Estates villa in Jumeirah Golf Estates 143. Villa Serenita includes a prayer room that doubles as a study, two interconnected spaces divided by sliding 'artistic doors' — evidence that the prayer room is a designed room type in UAE family villas 254. The guidance that shapes the majlis applies with more force here: the Islamweb fatwa permits frames bearing the names of God and the Prophet and Islamic emblems 61, and the Arabic majlis guide steers away from humans and animals 75; sacred text is placed high in reception spaces, not in kitchens, bathrooms or bedrooms or low on a wall — an inference from the fatwa and majlis-decor sources rather than a documented rule 69. For the office itself, the DIFC high-rise register — neutral envelope, one oversized abstract per wall — is the closest published model 311.

Apartments, penthouses and branded residences: where is the one wall?
In a two-bedroom of 1,100–1,650 sq ft the only art wall is the 4–5 m solid wall beside or opposite the glazing — a 100–150 cm horizontal, a 120 × 120 cm square or a pair of 80–100 cm works; three-beds and penthouses carry entrance galleries and 6 m-plus walls that take 2 m-plus pieces. Downtown Dubai two-bedroom listings in September 2026 ran from about 1,100 to 1,650 sq ft — examples from a shifting page, not a band 145; Dubai Marina three-beds run 1,655–3,009 sq ft 146; Al Reem Island two-beds are 1,345–1,835 sq ft at about AED 2,000 per sq ft 147; Dubai listed 980 penthouses from 4,182 sq ft upward 148. No floor plan with printed room dimensions could be fetched, so wall lengths are estimated from unit area and glazing-facing layouts 145.
Ceilings mark the branded tier: 3.2 m at Six Senses Residences 119, up to 4 m at Jumeirah Living Business Bay 120, double-height living at One at Palm Jumeirah 122, up to 3.5 m with hand-finished plaster walls at Janu Dubai's 57 residences (2027) 185; one Al Wasl penthouse markets 3.5 m as 'double height', so the term is loose 121. Dubai counted nearly 140 branded-residence projects as of December 2024, the most of any city 156. The Index Tower duplex shows the high-rise formula — white walls and off-white furnishings as 'a blank canvas for the art', oversized single canvases in the entry and lobby 311. Delivery into a tower is a booked event: installers report that Dubai high-rises want a building-management NOC applied for at least three days ahead through developer portals, plus a service-lift booking 24.
Where does a made-to-order original fit against what the UAE already sells?
Above the 255 cm ceiling of local furniture retail and below the gallery tier, in the sizes and palettes the walls above call for. 2XL Home's largest canvases are 255.5 × 155.5 cm 267; Danube Home's marketplace originals top out at 122 × 152 cm, the dearest piece (150 × 74 cm) at AED 9,000 273; on Artezaar only 34 of 1,779 works are 1.5 m² or larger, at a median AED 11,850 (September 2026) 1. Top-tier owners commission to the wall through galleries and consultants 30885. The retail norm for custom pieces is a very short or no return window — Artecasso allows two days and excludes custom-framed pieces 28 — so stage-by-stage approval before shipping is the substitute for returns (inference). Local finishing is fast: Qube Art Gallery stretches canvas at four branches in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with a customer review on its page reporting AED 100 to hang 25; Art Point in Jumeirah offers stretching, installation and free pick-up 26. In that gap, iHomeArt paints every one of its 1,455 works to order in any size, including 2 m-plus and panoramic formats, with palette changes possible; the buyer approves progress photos or video stage by stage before it ships, rolled for a local framer or stretched or framed for a villa with ground-floor access, free and insured, in about 10–13 days door to door. Terms are on the UAE overview.

Questions buyers in United Arab Emirates ask
- Do Dubai villas still have a majlis, or is it an Abu Dhabi feature?
- Both cities build it. A 13-bedroom Khalifa City A villa listed in September 2026 has a men's and a women's majlis 130, a Saadiyat Lagoons villa comes with a dedicated majlis 133, Palm Jumeirah Signature Villas offer a double-height 'Grand Majlis' layout 137, and Dubai villa architects put the men's majlis at 40 m² minimum 129.
- Can I hang a figurative painting in a UAE home?
- In private family rooms owners do: Al Kaabi, Babaee and Al Askari hang figures and portraits prominently 308306310. In the majlis and prayer room Arabic-language and Dubai majlis guides favour calligraphy, geometry, landscapes and botanicals and discourage images of humans and animals 7562. Ask the client which room.
- What ceiling height should I plan the artwork for?
- Assume 2.7 m in a standard Dubai apartment or townhouse, 3.0–3.2 m in the luxury tier (3.2 m at Six Senses Residences, up to 4 m at Jumeirah Living) and 4.5–6.0 m in villa foyers and double-height receptions; each tier widens the hangable band 116118119120.
- Are large canvases available locally?
- Up to a point. 2XL Home's largest are 255.5 × 155.5 cm at AED 1,679–1,749 (September 2026), Danube Home's marketplace originals stop at 122 × 152 cm, and only 34 of Artezaar's 1,779 works are 1.5 m² or more 2672731. Above that, work is commissioned.
- How is the formal dining wall different from the majlis wall?
- Closer viewing and a fixed table. The retail guide gives 150–200 cm for a double-height dining wall 318; guests sit 2–4 m from the wall rather than 6 m, so a 150–200 cm horizontal reads at scale (inference) 128; non-figurative subjects keep the room usable for formal company 6275. Al Kaabi's dining room is the commissioned precedent 308.
- How do I get a large stretched canvas into a Dubai tower?
- Book it. Installers report that Dubai high-rises and gated communities want a building-management NOC applied for at least three days ahead via developer portals such as Emaar One or My Nakheel, plus a service-lift booking 24. Shipping rolled and stretching locally (a Qube customer reports AED 100 to hang) avoids the oversize lift problem 25.
- Should I buy one oversized piece or a gallery wall?
- Both coexist: Al Barari collector Mana Jalalian alternates between one large piece and many small ones on the same wall 307. For the decorative tier, Artecasso and Art Smiley both report single oversized textured pieces outselling gridded arrangements in 2026 319320. Corridors of 8–15 m are where a series works 318.
