What size of painting do UAE walls need? Sizes, formats and hanging heights, room by room

Plan on 240–360 cm (94–142 in) of painting across a majlis or formal reception wall, 150–200 cm (59–79 in) for a living room or dining wall, 130–160 cm (51–63 in) above a super-king bed, 250 cm (98 in) or taller in a double-height foyer, and 100–150 cm (39–59 in) on a standard-ceiling apartment wall. The ranges follow from the rooms: Dubai's code sets 2.7 m as the minimum clear ceiling in living spaces 116, a Dubai brokerage puts luxury at 3.0–3.2 m and double-height voids at 4.5–6.0 m 118, one Abu Dhabi practice describes the majlis as six-metre spans under four-metre ceilings with seating on three walls 128, and the only published UAE sizing guide is a Dubai retailer's 318. Every figure below shows its reasoning.

How do you size a painting for a UAE wall?

Measure the clear ceiling, the free run of wall and the distance to the seat the work is read from, and let the distance set the width. The Dubai Building Code fixes a minimum clear ceiling of 2.7 m in living and bedroom spaces 116, and listings sort into 2.7 m compliance, 3.0–3.2 m luxury and 4.5–6.0 m double-height tiers 118. Walls are long because rooms are: one Abu Dhabi firm describes majlis briefs of six-metre spans under four-metre ceilings 128, Dubai villa architects put the men's majlis at 40 m² minimum with 3.5–4 m ceilings 129, and a Dubai retailer's 2026 guide gives majlis walls of 4–6 m and hallways of 8–15 m 318.

Two rules turn those numbers into sizes, and both are our practice, not UAE findings: the hangable band runs from a sofa back at about 85 cm to 25 cm below the ceiling, so a 2.7 m room offers about 1.6 m of wall, a 3.2 m room about 2.1 m and a 4.5 m double-height void about 3.4 m 118; and a work read from across a room wants a width near half the viewing distance, so a wall seen from 6 m takes a piece close to 3 m wide. The one published UAE guide, from Dubai retailer Artecasso, gives the room-by-room figures quoted through this page — 150 × 100 to 200 × 120 cm or a 180–280 cm set for the majlis, 130–160 cm over a super-king bed, 150–200 cm on a double-height dining wall — and centres of 165–180 cm under high ceilings; it sells the textured canvases it recommends, so read it as a trade view rather than a survey 318. A Dubai art consultancy lists 'too small' first among the mistakes it is hired to prevent 115.

How wide should the painting on a majlis or formal reception wall be?

240–360 cm (94–142 in) across a six-metre majlis wall, as one panoramic canvas or a two- to three-panel run; 300–500 cm (118–197 in) in total on the 8–10 m walls of an Emirates Hills or Saadiyat reception. With seating along three walls and the floor left open, the wall facing the entrance is the one long uninterrupted surface, read from 5–6 m by seated guests, which gives 240–360 cm, 40–60% of the wall's run, centred at about 120–140 cm for a seated eye line (derived) 128; majlis seats run 40–45 cm high, and guidance asks for one or two crafted elements against a quiet backdrop 150. The work must clear the sofa backs, and 3.5–4 m ceilings leave about 2.4–2.9 m of wall above them 129. The formal salon of a Dubai villa seats 14 or more 128; one Algedra project describes a 90 m² reception, which implies walls of 8–10 m that a single 150 × 200 cm canvas will not fill, so 2–3 m panoramics, diptychs or triptychs totalling 3–5 m, or one 2 m-plus vertical are the scale (derived) 128. Many houses have two such walls: a Khalifa City A villa listed in September 2026 carries a large men's majlis and a large women's majlis on a 685 m² ground floor 130, and Palm Jumeirah Signature Villas offer a double-height 'Grand Majlis' layout 137.

Which format suits the double-height foyer and stair void?

A vertical 250–350 cm (98–138 in) tall, or a stacked diptych or triptych, with its centre 165–180 cm from the floor. Double-height entries are standard in the villa stock: Palm Jumeirah Signature Villas offer 'Central Gallery' layouts with a double-height foyer through the centre of the house 137, a Garden Homes villa on Frond E lists a double-height foyer with a glass lift and floating stair 138, and Rasha villas in Arabian Ranches 2 put a double-height ceiling over the main living space 124. The term is used loosely — one Canal Front penthouse calls a 3.5 m ceiling 'double height' 121 — so measure before ordering. For 4.5–6 m ceilings the Dubai retail guide puts the centre at 165–180 cm 318; because the void is also read from the stair and landing, choose a vertical whose upper third still carries the composition (our practice). A decorator's Instagram post tagged 'double-height wall decoration' for a luxury villa shows demand at this scale 257.

Living room, dining wall and master suite

150–200 cm (59–79 in) wide over the main sofa or on the dining wall; 130–160 cm (51–63 in) above a super-king bed. In the Dubai villa formula the family seating area sits at the rear, opening to the garden 128; in apartments the living-dining runs along the glazed façade, leaving the solid wall opposite as the only art wall (derived) 145. A March 2023 r/dubai poster wanted a piece 65–75 inches on the diagonal, 'like a large TV', and found furniture shops stocked only smaller work 232. The retail guide gives 150–200 cm for a double-height or open-plan dining wall and 130–160 cm above a super-king bed 318; a black-and-white painting commissioned for the dining room of an Emirati filmmaker's Jumeirah villa shows the top tier reaching the same answer by commission 308. Hang bedroom work 20–30 cm above the headboard and dining work centred at 150–160 cm, where seated and standing eye lines meet (our practice).

Apartments, corridors, offices and hotel rooms

100–150 cm (39–59 in) on a standard 2.7 m apartment wall, 150–200 cm (59–79 in) at 3.2–4 m, a series of 60 × 80 cm (24 × 31 in) works along a corridor, and 200 cm and up in a reception or boardroom. Downtown Dubai two-bedroom listings in September 2026 ran from about 1,100 to 1,650 sq ft (100–155 m²) 145 and Al Reem Island two-beds 1,345–1,835 sq ft 147, with a living wall of roughly 4–5 m opposite the glazing; under a 2.7 m ceiling a 100–150 cm horizontal, a 120 × 120 cm square or a pair of 80–100 cm works fit, while penthouses of 4,000–8,000 sq ft carry entrance galleries and 6 m-plus walls that take 2 m pieces (derived) 145118. Six Senses Residences lists 3.2 m ceilings and Jumeirah Living Business Bay up to 4 m, which admits 150–200 cm works 119120. Hallways of 8–15 m take a series of 60 × 80 cm works 318. Office reference points are large: Mubadala acquired a 204 × 325 cm triptych in December 2024 34, and Iris Projects in Abu Dhabi shows 275 × 400 cm canvases to corporate buyers 59. Hotel guest-room art is bulk-supplied through consultancies — 1,518 pieces for Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab in 2025 81 — so one 100–150 cm work over the headboard is the norm, while The Lana's signature suites are duplexes with double-height corner living rooms 174 (inference).

When should you go over 2 metres?

Whenever the wall is read from more than 4 m, whenever the ceiling passes 3.5 m, and on every majlis, reception and foyer wall in the villa communities — which is where the local off-the-shelf supply thins out. The largest canvases seen at 2XL Home are 255.5 × 155.5 cm at AED 1,679–1,749 in September 2026 (inference from a 55-item listing) 267; Danube Home's handmade marketplace originals top out at 122 × 152 cm, the dearest (150 × 74 cm) at AED 9,000 273; on Artezaar only 34 of 1,779 works are 1.5 m² or larger, the largest at 150 × 200 cm and AED 20,000 1. A Dubai retailer's 2026 note says one oversized textured piece 'is essential for double-height walls and expansive living rooms' 319, and owners at the top commission to the wall through galleries and consultants 30885. That is the gap a made-to-order studio fills: iHomeArt lists sizes up to 254 cm across 1,455 works, 106 of them panoramic, and every work can be painted larger, so a 300 × 120 cm majlis panoramic or a 120 × 300 cm stair vertical is a normal order.

Which finish and frame suit the UAE climate and interiors?

Keep direct sun off the canvas, order a deep stretcher with a varnished surface rather than glass, match the frame to the room's metal — gold, bronze or brass in classical and majlis schemes, black, white or natural wood in warm-minimal ones — and plan the lighting first. Heat and sun are the documented constraints: an Emirati collector's Jumeirah villa blocked up some windows 'to keep things cool and protect the art' 308, a silver-leaf wall finish at a Palm Jumeirah villa developed craquelure in Dubai's heat 254, and the consultancy that directed NYU Abu Dhabi's campus collection cites resistance to extreme climate among its criteria 51. Interiors are sealed and air-conditioned, which suggests a varnished canvas is enough and glass would only add glare under cove lighting (inference). On metal: Abu Dhabi villa guidance reads gold as 'wealth and splendour of heritage' 65, 2026 majlis guidance pairs beige and warm grey with matte gold or bronze 330, and Dubai studios report a shift to brass, aged bronze, terracotta and amber 325.

Local finishing is fast: Qube Art Gallery stretches canvas and makes tray frames at four branches in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with a customer review on its page reporting AED 100 for hanging 25; Art Point in Jumeirah 2 offers stretching, installation and free pick-up 26. Delivery into a tower is a booking: installers such as Upsleeve report that a building-management NOC is applied for at least three days ahead, with a service-lift reservation 24. iHomeArt ships rolled, stretched or framed (gold, silver, black, white or wood), insured by DHL, FedEx or USPS, so a 3 m panoramic can travel rolled to a Dubai framer or arrive stretched for a villa with ground-floor access.

Questions buyers in United Arab Emirates ask

What size painting does a majlis wall need?
For a six-metre wall with seating on three sides, 240–360 cm (94–142 in) across as one panoramic or a two- to three-panel run, centred at 120–140 cm for seated guests (derived from one firm's Abu Dhabi brief) 128. The Dubai retail rule is one 150 × 100 to 200 × 120 cm canvas or a 180–280 cm multi-panel set 318.
How high should a painting hang under a 4 m or double-height ceiling?
The Dubai retail guide puts the centre at 165–180 cm from the floor for 4.5–6 m ceilings 318. In a majlis, where guests sit on 40–45 cm seats, a lower centre of 120–140 cm reads better (derived) 150128. Under ordinary ceilings 145–155 cm is our standard practice.
Is a 2 m painting too big for a Dubai apartment?
Under the 2.7 m minimum ceiling the hangable band above a sofa is about 1.6 m, so 100–150 cm wide horizontals suit a two-bed 116118. At 3.2 m (Six Senses Residences) or up to 4 m (Jumeirah Living Business Bay) a 150–200 cm work fits, and penthouse entrance galleries take 2 m pieces 119120145.
Does the UAE heat damage a canvas?
Sun and heat are the documented risks: a Jumeirah collector blocked windows 'to keep things cool and protect the art' 308, and a silver-leaf finish on the Palm developed craquelure in the heat 254. Keep the canvas out of direct sun in a sealed, air-conditioned room; a varnished surface is then enough (inference).
Should a 3 m canvas arrive rolled or stretched?
Rolled, if the destination is a tower: Qube Art Gallery and Art Point stretch and hang canvases locally in Dubai and Abu Dhabi 2526, while tower deliveries need a building NOC applied for at least three days ahead plus a service-lift booking, according to installers 24. Stretched or framed suits villas with ground-floor access.
Which frame colour suits UAE interiors?
Gold, bronze or brass in classical and majlis schemes, where 2026 guidance pairs beige and warm grey with matte gold or bronze 330 and gold accents are read as heritage prestige 65; black, white or natural wood in warm-minimal Dubai rooms, which are shifting to brass, terracotta and amber accents 325.
