What do Dutch galleries and studio painters charge for an original?
In the price lists sampled, a Dutch studio original of 1–3.6 m² costs about €800–1,800 per m², a commissioned portrait €1,400–3,900 per m², and one gallery’s published guidance puts a realistic first purchase at €500–2,500 per work 123155. Rotterdam abstract painter Ronald Hunter lists ‘Static in Red’ at 80 × 120 cm for €799, ‘Traffic Pink XL’ at 170 × 120 cm for €2,899 and his largest studio work, 200 × 180 cm, for €6,499, or roughly €830–1,805 per m² (page as fetched, 18 September 2026); he takes commissions ‘usually within a few weeks’ when a format is sold out 1. Breda studio ART Eva Maria’s commission list runs from €900 for a 30 × 40 cm portrait to €2,050 for 100 × 150 cm, about €1,370 per m² at the largest size 2. Portrait painter Rineke Engwerda charges from €1,250 for a 30 × 40 cm portrait and €3,500 for a 150 × 60 cm full-length one (about €3,890 per m²), with roughly three months’ lead time 3. Sille Gallery in Oudewater puts Dutch contemporary art at €500–1,500 per work for emerging artists, €1,000–3,000 for early-established, €3,000–10,000 for established and €10,000 and up for museum-level names (20 September 2025) 155. These are three studios and one gallery, not a survey, which suggests the bands are indicative rather than a market rate.
The supply side is broad and small-scale: CBS counts 810 galleries and exhibition spaces (2025), 129 art museums (2024) and 95 art-lending centres (2025), the gallery association NGA had 91 members in 2024, and its last survey (85 galleries, 2019 data) put average gallery turnover at €270,000 a year 188. Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam holds its 20th edition at De Kromhouthal on 25–29 November 2026 with over 65 galleries and works quoted from about €100 to €5,000–7,500 157; TEFAF Maastricht (March, about 270 dealers), Art Rotterdam, KunstRAI and PAN Amsterdam (November, high-end) cover the rest of the calendar 158. On the secondary market Kunstveiling.nl charges buyers a 15% premium and says its auction prices average about 20% of the original gallery price 156.
What sells is shifting. Christie’s Netherlands director Arno Verkade said in October 2025 that today’s art ‘must be Instagrammable and figurative’ and that figurative painting is now the trend in a way nobody predicted 164. The last Dutch buyer survey with price bands is old: in 2015, 63% of over 500 buyers preferred €250–999 and 25% €1,000–2,499, 68% still bought in galleries, and 50% named visible pricing as a reason to buy online 62. Only 31% preferred a unique work over a limited edition, which suggests ‘original’ alone is not the deciding argument for most Dutch buyers 62.
What do the home stores and webshops sell, and how big does it go?
Chains stop at about 140–200 cm for printed and branded canvases and the ‘hand-painted’ webshops at 250 cm for stock oils, at €19 to €1,299 per piece 146148222220153. The prices below are each seller’s listed consumer price on the date fetched, and the medium is the seller’s own description.

| Kunst voor in Huis | $1€279 | 19 Sept 2026 7 | |||
| Kunst-Loft.nl | ‘Magnolia Moments’, Sony Lim | 120 × 180 cm | Hand-painted impasto oil, certificate | €1,299 (‘60% discount’ badge) | 18 Sept 2026 153 |
The discount end is print: Kwantum’s 75 × 115 cm canvases carry no hand-painted claim, IKEA Belgium’s PJÄTTERYD range has 31 frameless printed pieces from €19.99 at 50 × 70 cm, and Rivièra Maison lists 63 mostly photographic canvases from €159 146148150. Loods 5’s ‘Verf’ canvas comes in five sizes from 60 × 40 to 200 × 100 cm, and its ‘Loods 5 Kunst’ label sells originals from over 100 artists plus prints across six stores 222151. Werk aan de Muur, the print-on-demand platform, holds a 5,000-plus ‘XXL’ collection made to order and counts Vermeer’s ‘Meisje met de parel’ and Van Gogh’s ‘Caféterras bij nacht’ among its bestsellers 136135.
The ‘hand-painted’ tier is stock, not commission. Schilderijen.nl, trading since 1999, lists 393 ‘handgeschilderde’ oils that are all ‘direct uit voorraad leverbaar’ and offers no custom sizes on the collection page 152220. Bestpaintings.nl claims over 1,300 paintings, ‘100% handgeschilderd’, free delivery across the Netherlands and ‘maatwerk’ without a published lead time 221. Kunst voor in Huis in Eindhoven says every painting is oil on linen or canvas, painted to order, with homepage prices from €139 to €579 and a free trial placement at home 7. Kunst-Loft.nl ships its 120 × 180 cm impasto oils in 5–7 days with a certificate of authenticity and a 100-day return 153. None of these four sellers states where the canvases are painted, so origin has to be recorded as undisclosed rather than assumed 220; Kunst voor in Huis does run a clearance category titled ‘uitverkoop Chinese kunst’, seen in search results but not opened, which suggests at least part of this tier is imported 31.
Who supplies the shops: wholesalers, importers, framers and marketplace sellers
The trade layer is easy to find but its prices are behind logins: TICA’s cash-and-carry halls and Art Collection International’s B2B system sell wall décor per piece to registered retailers and stylists without publishing a single price or size 213215216. TICA Aalsmeer, at Randweg 155 in Uithoorn, calls itself the purchasing centre for retailers and stylists with over 20,000 m² where buyers ‘shop per piece’; its own pages give the brand count as 160 or 450 depending on which page is read 211212. Its wall-décor category covers mirrors, paintings, wall shelves and prints across seven locations, including TICA Brussels, and its paintings page frames the range as ‘artistic prints, colorful posters, and graphic statements’ 213214. Online buying is open to entrepreneurs who meet its admission policy, access is free for twelve months, and ‘each exhibitor sets its own minimum order amount’ 215. Art Collection International in Abcoude, ‘experts in wall decor since 1983’, supplies ‘only to industry related retailers’, runs an Earth Tones Art line described on Instagram as ‘elk stuk is uniek, handgeschilderd’ without a stated country of painting, and sells at TICA Aalsmeer, Venlo and Ede with ‘no minimum order here’ 216217. De Woonindustrie in Nieuwegein hosts more than 300 brands for retailers and interior designers 218.
Behind that sits an import flow the statistics do not itemise: CBS put Dutch goods imports from China at €64.2 billion in 2022, 9.5% of all imports, with furniture at €1.6 billion but no wall-décor line 224. A China-based studio runs a Dutch-language wholesale page aimed at distributors, hotels and interior designers, and bol.com carries third-party ‘handgeschilderd’ oil-on-canvas listings; neither page could be opened, so the offers are noted, not verified 223225. Chinese webshops took 31% of all Dutch cross-border online purchases in 2025, and 70% of Dutch users of Temu, Shein or AliExpress give low price as their main reason 1821.
What buyers complain about is documented at parcel level rather than painting level: Klarna research cited by Thuiswinkel.org lists damaged products (26%) and the item looking different in reality than online (19%) among the main Dutch return reasons, the two that apply to canvases 27. Bestpaintings’ list-versus-sale pairs and Kunst-Loft’s ‘60% discount’ badge on a €1,299 piece are point-in-time promotions, which suggests permanent discounting is part of how this tier prices 221153. No independent framer’s price list was captured; in the sampled shops framing is an add-on, with Kunst-Loft selling shadow-gap frame upgrades and Werk aan de Muur offering wooden and aluminium ArtFrames or acrylic glass at order 153136.
What does a square metre of wall art cost in the Netherlands?
Per square metre, the three tiers are about €22–50 for discount prints, €120–600 for ‘hand-painted’ stock and branded canvases, and €830–3,900 for named studio originals, on the SKUs captured in September 2026 14614822015313. The figures are computed from listed sizes and prices; they are examples from a small sample, not averages.
| Tier | Example | Size | Price | About €/m² |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Discount print | Kwantum ‘Yvoire’ / ‘Auvillar’ | 75 × 115 cm | €19 / €25 | €22–29 146147 |
| Discount print | IKEA PJÄTTERYD ‘Big City’ | 118 × 78 cm | €44.99 | €49 148 |
| ‘Hand-painted’ stock | Schilderijen.nl ‘Infinity’ / ‘Color Explosion’ | 130 × 70 / 250 × 100 cm | €159 / €299 | €175 / €120 220 |
| Branded canvas | Loods 5 ‘Verf’ | 150 × 100 cm | €249 | €166 222 |
| ‘Hand-painted’ stock | Bestpaintings.nl | 90 × 120 cm | €389–399 list | €360–370 221 |
| Premium-brand canvas | Rivièra Maison ‘Modern Strikes’ | 100 × 150 cm | €799 | €533 150 |
| Boutique hand-painted | Kunst-Loft ‘Magnolia Moments’ | 120 × 180 cm | €1,299 | €600 153 |
| Studio original | Ronald Hunter, Rotterdam | 80 × 120 to 200 × 180 cm | €799–6,499 | €830–1,805 1 |
| Studio commission | ART Eva Maria, Breda | 100 × 150 cm | €2,050 | €1,370 2 |
| Portrait commission | Rineke Engwerda | 150 × 60 cm | €3,500 | €3,890 3 |
Two patterns hold. First, the rate per square metre falls as size rises: Schilderijen.nl’s stock drops from about €175 per m² at 130 × 70 cm to about €120 per m² at 250 × 100 cm, and ART Eva Maria’s list falls from €7,500 per m² at 30 × 40 cm to €1,370 per m² at 100 × 150 cm 2202. Second, the gap between tiers is wider per piece than per square metre at large formats: a 250 × 100 cm ‘hand-painted’ stock canvas costs €299 and a 200 × 180 cm studio original €6,499, roughly 22 times the price for 1.4 times the area 2201. Nothing hand-painted was found between about €600 and €830 per m² at 2 m and above, which suggests the space between anonymous stock and named studios is thin rather than empty; Kunst-Loft and Bestpaintings sell into it at smaller sizes 153221. Trade prices for the wholesale tier are not public, so no wholesale rate per m² can be stated 215216.
Where do made-to-order originals fit?
Made-to-order originals sit in the band the Dutch market barely documents: above the ‘hand-painted’ stock tier that tops out at 250 × 100 cm with no approval step and no stated origin, and below the named studio painters who charge about €830 per m² and up with lead times of weeks to months 22013. Schilderijen.nl’s largest work is 250 × 100 cm from stock, Loods 5’s series stops at 200 × 100 cm, and Bestpaintings and Kunst voor in Huis offer ‘maatwerk’ without a published maximum size or lead time; no seller in this tier advertises 2 m-plus made-to-order work with progress photos or artist approval 2202222217.
iHomeArt is the trade channel of Siji Art Hub in Foshan, China: 1,455 original hand-painted canvas works painted to order in any size, with catalogue sizes up to 254 cm and every work available larger, including panoramic formats. Painting takes about a week and transit 3–7 days, so 10–13 days door to door, with free insured shipping by DHL, FedEx or USPS; every piece is signed by the artist with a certificate of authenticity, progress photos or video come with stage-by-stage approval, the minimum order is one piece with volume pricing from ten, finishes are rolled, stretched or framed, quotes come within one business day, and there are no public prices.
Three caveats follow from the evidence. Dutch buyers like visible prices: 50% of surveyed buyers in 2015 named them as a reason to buy online and 49% named pressure-free decision-making, so a quote-only model has to earn its place with a fast, specific answer 62. ‘From China’ carries a low-price association in the mass market, where 70% of Temu, Shein and AliExpress users cite price as their main motive, which suggests a Foshan studio is judged on process proof, signature and certificate rather than on origin alone; since the Dutch ‘hand-painted’ webshops disclose no origin at all, stating it openly is a different position rather than a weakness to hide 21220. And offices have an incumbent: Kunstuitleen.nl offers over 30,000 works to companies with free delivery, hanging and trial placement within five working days, IQ Kunstuitleen rents from €10 a month per work, and CBS counts 95 art-lending centres, so a made-to-order supplier competes with a rental habit, not with bare walls 4849188.
Where the fit is real is the wall the local tiers cannot serve from stock: the 276–403 m² villas listed in Laren and Blaricum on 1,700–2,500 m² plots, whose plans imply 6–9 m living-room wall runs, or the long wall under the 2.4–2.7 m ceiling of a post-war Dutch house, where décor media now advise one oversized work at two-thirds of sofa width, 150–170 cm (59–67 in) for a 240 cm sofa 10293129. The cuts below show what the catalogue holds at those formats today.

Questions buyers in Netherlands ask
- How much does an original painting by a Dutch artist cost?
- Sille Gallery’s September 2025 guidance puts emerging artists at €500–1,500 per work, early-established at €1,000–3,000 and established at €3,000–10,000, with €500–2,500 realistic for a first purchase 155. Rotterdam painter Ronald Hunter lists 80 × 120 cm originals from €799 and a 200 × 180 cm work at €6,499 (September 2026) 1.
- What is the cheapest large canvas sold in Dutch shops?
- Kwantum sells 75 × 115 cm printed canvases at €19–25, and IKEA’s PJÄTTERYD prints run to 140 × 56 cm at €34.99 and 118 × 78 cm at €44.99 (September 2026) 146147148. Loods 5’s 150 × 100 cm canvas costs €249 with one-to-two-week delivery, in a series that stops at 200 × 100 cm 222.
- Are the ‘handgeschilderde’ canvases on Dutch webshops real paintings, and where are they made?
- The sellers describe them as hand-painted oils sold from stock in fixed sizes, for example €159 at 130 × 70 cm and €299 at 250 × 100 cm at Schilderijen.nl, and €389–399 at 90 × 120 cm at Bestpaintings (September 2026) 220221. None of the four sellers checked states where the work is painted, so origin is undisclosed 220.
- Where can a retailer or stylist buy wall décor wholesale in the Netherlands?
- TICA’s halls in Aalsmeer, Venlo and Ede sell mirrors, paintings and prints per piece to registered trade buyers, with each exhibitor setting its own online minimum 213215. Art Collection International (Abcoude, since 1983) supplies retailers only and sells at TICA with no minimum order 216217. De Woonindustrie in Nieuwegein hosts over 300 brands 218.
- What does renting art cost a Dutch company?
- Entry rates are €10 per work per month at IQ Kunstuitleen and €5 at Sille Gallery for the smallest works, with larger pieces priced on request (September 2026) 49. Kunstuitleen.nl adds free delivery, hanging and a trial placement within five working days 48, and CBS counts 95 art-lending centres (2025) 188. That is the incumbent a purchase competes with.
- Which Dutch art fairs sell at accessible prices?
- Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam runs its 20th edition at De Kromhouthal on 25–29 November 2026 with over 65 galleries; listings quote works from about €100 to €5,000–7,500 157. KOJO Art’s 2026 calendar adds Art Rotterdam, KunstRAI, PAN Amsterdam and summer artist markets in Bergen, Oirschot and Rosmalen, with TEFAF Maastricht at the top end 158.
- Why does iHomeArt not publish prices when Dutch buyers prefer to see them?
- Because every work is painted to order in the buyer’s size, palette and finish, a list price would not describe the piece; quotes are answered within one business day. The preference is real: 50% of surveyed Dutch buyers in 2015 named visible pricing as a reason to buy online 62. Local studio originals list at about €830–1,800 per m² 1.
